Film Review: Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 31 Desember 2013 | 23.37

Harry Guerin reviews the Idris Elba-starring biopic, which opens in cinemas on Friday January 3.

When it comes to blessings, Idris Elba has the air of a man who counts his every night. Rightly so. The majority of actors would be lucky to have one iconic screen role during their careers, but, at the age of 41, Elba already has three: Stringer Bell in The Wire, John Luther in Luther and now the great man in this conventional, but always compelling biopic. Elba is a lot wider and taller than Nelson Mandela, but in terms of heart and soul he's a perfect fit.

Based on the autobiography of the same name, Long Walk to Freedom begins in the 1940s with Mandela a young work-hard-play-hard lawyer. Not particularly political, his awakening comes following the murder of a friend in police custody. From there, director Justin Chadwick moves through the growth of the African National Congress (ANC), the end of Mandela's first marriage, his union with second wife Winnie (Naomie Harris), the Sharpville Massacre, the ANC's sabotage campaign, Mandela's arrest and sentencing to life in prison on Robben Island.

It's a breathless charge through events, many of which would be worthy of films in themselves - and we're not even halfway there. We still have to see: the emotional impact of Mandela's imprisonment; the growth in power and influence of the ANC; the Soweto Massacre; the move to Pollsmor Prison; controversies, fragile talks becoming endgame negotiations; the transfer to Victor Verster prison; Mandela's release on February 11 1990; the chaos and carnage which continued on the route to democracy and Inauguration Day.

That Chadwick has made such a cohesive film, which deftly combines the personal and the political with tension and tenderness, is no mean feat. And while you will wish that more screentime had been devoted to some elements, the inevitable miniseries that is to come will have its work cut out to do a better job than this chronicle.

The same applies to Elba's performance. Within five minutes you've forgotten about the physical dissimilarities; his voice and charisma are hypnotic and he even delivers his best work in the film as the elderly Mandela. Truly, the most fitting of tributes to the life story of our age.

There is more gratitude than sadness by the closing credits. It may be hard to imagine that anything could make you want to read the autobiography even more, but that is exactly what happens here.

Film Review: American Hustle

The Oscar-tipped American Hustle is in cinemas from January 1. Harry Guerin says you should be too.

When it comes to cinema, forget about it: January really is the most wonderful time of the year. It's when most of the Oscar contenders line up for release and there's something worth queuing for every week. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and 12 Years a Slave are both to come in the next 10 days and the month and year begin with American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter director David O Russell's story of Seventies schemers who just can't stop scheming.

Based on (some) real-life events, it brings us into the fly-by-night world of Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), a dry cleaning store owner turned serious scam artist who finds his dream partner (and lover) in Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams), a former stripper who now works under the name of 'Lady Edith Greensley'. During a time of crippling interest rates Irving and Sydney find a way to fleece businessmen who are desperate for funds. But among them is an undercover FBI agent, Richard 'Richie' DiMaso (Bradley Cooper).

Duly cornered, Irving and Sydney are 'persuaded' to work for Richie on sting operations. Already chock full of sexual tension, ego and distrust, the trio's relationship becomes even more dysfunctional and co-dependent when Richie decides to pursue a career-making case involving corruption and a pompadour-wearing New Jersey mayor named Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner). Everyone in this shakedown/takedown is already in way over their heads. And that's before the Mob and Irving's motormouth wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) become involved.

In grifter parlance, director Russell really knows how to put together a crew. By pairing Bale and Adams from The Fighter with Cooper and Lawrence from Silver Linings..., and throwing Renner into the bargain, he has given viewers the chance to see a great ensemble tear it up in a comedy-crime mash-up powered more by cringe than cool. From outfits to outbursts, American Hustle's debt to Goodfellas is huge and while it's slower and pudgier than Martin Scorsese's masterpiece, the performances make it a must-see – great examples of the difference between being a film star and an actor. Icon status, you feel, awaits Jennifer Lawrence as the latter. It takes some kind of talent to steal the show from Bale, but here, as "The Princess of Passive-Aggressive Karate", she makes it all look so easy.

You should gladly give up your money for a piece of this action. Do the Hustle.

Aniston, Bullock and Diaz to team up?

It is reported that Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz want to join forces for "the mother of all chick comedies".

RadarOnline.com, which first broke the story, quotes a source as saying that the three stars are looking for the right script with significant roles for each.

"But Sandra is the one who is friends with both Cameron and Jennifer, and would likely get top billing in the project," said the source.

The source continued: "Although there isn't a script or concept in play just yet, the film could do for girl comedies what The Avengers did for superhero movies."

EastEnders bosses say no changes to Janine plot

Written By Unknown on Senin, 30 Desember 2013 | 23.37

EastEnders bosses have dismissed a report that major changes have been made to killer Janine Butcher's (Charlie Brooks) exit storyline.

Fans of the soap have seen Janine arrested for Michael Moon's murder.

A report had claimed that the plot had to be changed after Jasmyn Banks, who played the wrongly accused Alice, was unavailable to film.

But an EastEnders spokesperson told Digital Spy: "There have been no changes to the ending of Janine's story. Alice's role was a very minor part in the conclusion of this storyline so everything will go ahead as planned."

The spokesperson continued: "We are not going to confirm the details of the storyline as we don't want to spoil it for the viewers. However, there are a few big twists to come."

Ant & Dec feared for careers after phone scandal

UK TV mainstays Ant & Dec have admitted that they feared for their broadcasting careers following a phone-in scandal involving their shows.

In 2007, it emerged that phone-in competitions had been rigged on their prime time ITV shows Gameshow Marathon and Saturday Night Takeaway. ITV was later fined over £5 million by UK TV regulator Ofcom.

Speaking yesterday (Sunday) on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, Declan Donnelly recalled: "We thought that was probably it. I think the viewers would have been justified in thinking their trust had been breached and if that had been the end I don't think we could have had many complaints.

"It was, without doubt, our worst moment, our worst point. Totally. We couldn't quite comprehend how it was allowed to happen."

Ant McPartlin added: "I think our audience trust us and with that case we worried that the trust had gone.

"It did affect us... it was probably the worst part of our career. We were credited as executive producers. A lot of people said, 'You are executive producers, you should have known this was going on', but we didn't."

The TV duo acknowledged that subsequent successes at the National Television Awards - winning three prizes voted for by fans - helped to restore their faith in their broadcasting careers.

"It was an emotional night because there is the realisation that maybe all is not lost and we started going about our work and trying to rebuild our trust with the viewer and hope that we could get back to where we were," said Donnelly.

Doctor Who Scottish accent is explained by BBC

The BBC has maintained that the decision to allow new Doctor Who Peter Capaldi to use his own Scottish accent was a creative one.

Two Doctors ago, fellow Scotsman David Tennant was compelled to 'go English' when he took on the Timelord role.

Tennant was snubbed by BBC bosses when he asked to keep his accent, but Capaldi is allowed to use his Glaswegian burr.

A BBC spokesman said: "The decision for Peter Capaldi to have a Scottish accent as the Doctor was a creative decision and it was not part of his contract."

A show insider told The Mirror: "It was well known that David wanted to use his accent. But he was told it just wouldn't be possible and he had to adopt an English one.

"Now Peter has been able to use his accent some fans think it's a bit of a kick in the teeth.

"But Peter is best at acting in a Scottish accent and he was delighted when he found out he could play the part with his own voice. It gives his character a stronger identity as well."

When Tennant joined the hit show as the 10th Doctor in 2005, he said: "I'd love to be the first Time Lord to wear a kilt."

But writer Russell T Davies said he did not want the Doctor's voice "touring the regions". Producer Steven Moffat weaved Capaldi's accent into the plot by using Scot Amy Pond as the last person 11th Doctor Matt Smith saw before regenerating.

In an interview in the new issue of Hello! magazine, the 71-year-old actress said of plastic surgery: "I've realised this is just not me, but it is what it is and you have to live with it."

Ekland continued: "Whatever I did 15 or 20 years ago, I'd never have done now. I turned 50, and you get insecure.

Broadchurch named Best Show of 2013

The ITV murder-mystery drama Broadchurch has been named the Best TV Show of 2013 by the Radio Times.

The Top 10 list, compiled by the UK magazine's writers, saw two Channel 4 shows, The Returned and Educating Yorkshire, in second and third places respectively.

Tim Glanfield, Editor of RadioTimes.com, said: "The death of event TV has been greatly exaggerated: Broadchurch drew the [British] nation into a collective hysteria every Monday night for eight weeks, as who killed Danny Latimer became the talking point in the press, pubs, front rooms and factories up and down the country."

Glanfield added: "A brilliant piece of homegrown drama with an exquisite cast of actors, Broadchurch is a fantastic example of British TV at its very best."

O'Carroll refuses to censor Mrs Brown for US

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 29 Desember 2013 | 23.37

Mrs Brown's Boys creator Brendan O'Carroll is reported to have refused to cut swearing from the show for the US market.

The Irish comedy has already been a massive hit both here and in the UK and is drawing a lot of interest from a number of American channels.

But cast member Rory Cowan told the Irish Mirror that O'Carroll has refused for the show to be edited in any way, despite US networks' strict rules on the use of foul language.

Cowan - who stars as Rory Brown on the show and also works as O'Carroll's manager - said: "The problem with us in the US is because there is swearing in it - there cannot be swearing in any TV shows on any network channel.

"By law if there is any swearing it has got to be beeped - and not just change the words. Brendan won't agree to that at all.

"Brendan would stick to his guns. He would rather not change anything."

Cowan added that HBO, PBS and streaming service Netflix have all expressed an interest in airing the programme in the US, while many American soldiers are already fans.

He said: "I know all the US army bases get the DVDs - I don't know where they get them. We are getting fan mail from all the army bases all over America. And they get them free - they're being sent from somewhere.

"Brendan is talking to HBO and PBS about doing it in America and they do want it as it is - swearing and all. Brendan is also talking to Netflix and that's how they will get around that."

RTÉ Ten's top albums of 2013

It was a year of miraculous comebacks, stunning debuts and disappointing new releases from established artists. Alan Corr rounds up Ten's top albums of the year.

Yeezus – Kanye West

Kanye West's sixth album is a bratty, petulant and LOL-funny collection of songs that addresses themes of racism, fear of commitment, sex, and the unbearable lightness of, well, being Kanye West - all to the sound of hyperventilating, caterwauling EDM, brash synth barrages, soul samples, and soppy vocoder moments. Following the operatic My Dark Twisted Fantasy and his heavyweight bout with Jay-Z on the hugely successful Watch The Throne, West continues to build his myth with Yeezus. He also sounds all too convinced of his own genius. West is no genius but he remains a very interesting and musically daring car crash of a pop star. Read the full review here.

John Murry – The Golden Age of Nowhere

A classic example of how our worst enemies are ourselves, and a reminder that you can climb back out of the hole you've dug, Murry's debut recounts addiction, the filling of voids, the hustles of false dawns and the ghosts we all live with like a master storyteller who's been around a lot longer than 34 years. One ragged "glory" follows another, with Murry's rough-and-ready guitar playing the perfect foil for the sadness of his Southern drawl. And if you find a better song this year than his piano-driven OD odyssey Little Coloured Balloons, it will more than likely be somewhere on this album too. Harry Guerin Read full review here.

Janelle Monáe - Electric Lady

Sssssh . . . can you hear that? That's the sound of Beyoncé's jaw dropping and Gaga's teeth grinding at the return of Janelle Monáe. She's the woman who fell to earth as rebel cyborg Cindi Mayweather in 2010 with her stunning debut album The ArchAndroid. Now like Fritz Lang's Maschinenmensch, Monáe arises again on this hour-long melange of mind-blowing pop, rock and soul. Electric Lady embraces everything from Hendrix style pyrotechnics, to exotic cinematic string sections, to sweet, smooth jams. It's certainly as sprawling and hyperactive as her debut as it cartwheels through a dizzying array of styles and moods. And as it should be with a daughter of Kansas, everything else seems like it's in black and white until Janelle Monáe flicks the switch and turns it to vivid and lurid Technicolor. Read the full review.

Absolute Zero - LIttle Green Cars

They're barely out of their teens but Dublin quintet Little Green Cars display a mature intensity and a terrific grasp of classic song writing on their astonishing debut album. Like refugees from the era of The Band and Emmylou and Gram, it's almost as if they are here to serve notice that the adult orientated country rock of Lady Antebellum and the faux folk of Mumford & Sons just will not do. Guns, bitter tears, death and angels crop up a lot on these songs, like the words of dustbowl desperadoes striking out on a quest for redemption but ending up penitent at the bottom of a dirt track. You may find yourself joining these wide-eyed (not so) innocents as they fumble their way forward on their quest for glory. Read full review here.

mbv – My Bloody Valentine

Considering that they did so much to re-invent the guitar album over twenty years ago, Kevin Shields and band mates Colm Ó Cíosóig, Butcher and Debbie Googe must have been on a mission these past two decades to re-cast music's recent fascinations and fashions on their new album, right? Wrong - MBV's miracalous return breathes and sighs and glows and burns in the same style as the epochal Loveless. If anything it sounds like they walked back into the studio a few days after those protracted sessions and began working almost immediately - only perhaps with their 1988 album Isn't Anything also in mind. You know the way shapes spiral, blur and form clouds of red and black as they drift across your field of vision when you close your eyes? That's what mbv sounds like. Totally mesmerising and slightly distressing, My Bloody Valentine are back to soundtrack your dreams. Read the full review here.

These New Puritans – Field of Dreams

With a band name inspired by a song by The Fall, London's These New Puritans were never going to be a straight-forward proposition. After building a reputation as post-rock neo-classicists on their first two albums, twin brothers George and Jack Barnett continue their voyage darkly on this astonishing third release. It thrums with a low-level anxiety as astringent orchestral arrangements saw away, creating a minimalist mood not unlike Scott Walker and Thom Yorke doing late-period Talk Talk. In a Bergman movie. The Barnetts take the oblique view, often adding children's choirs, exotic electronics and more organic sounds in the spirit of experimentation. These New Puritans are constantly striving to discover new worlds of sound and the fascination deepens with each new release. Read the full review here.

Laura Mvula – Sing to The Moon youtube clip

It's pronounced mmm-voola and rarely has onomatopoeia made more sense. This 25-year-old graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire with a degree in composition has a spookily sensuous voice and the lush cinematic arrangements to match on her seductive debut. She's already been labelled gospeldelia, called "Nina Simone sings the Beach Boys", and won comparisons with sci-fi pop goddess Janelle Monáe. Or maybe Mvula makes futuristic chamber pop. But what really glows at the heart of Sing to The Moon is solid song-writing with a lightness of touch that can suddenly expand into mind-blowing, kaleidoscopic vistas. It may be a bit schooled and mannered in places but this is an intriguing and insinuating debut. Mvula is the best thing to come out of Birmingham since Tony Hancock. Read the full review here.

Pale Green Ghosts – John Grant

On his astonishing solo debut, The Queen of Denmark, John Grant sounded like a sweet-voiced seventies singer with a festering grudge. Think Glen Campbell singing Randy Newman with a few serrated barbs thrown in by the late Bill Hicks. For the follow up, the 44-year-old from Michigan has parted ways with Midlake, the Texan band who provided the beguiling soft rock sound of his debut, and teamed up with Icelandic producer Biggi Veira of the constantly evolving dance act Gus Gus. This embrace of modulated synths, dark keyboards and skittering beats in Grant's adoptive home of Reykjavík signals a move away from the starkly confessional into a morose chill out room or a particularly misanthropic dance floor made for one. Just in case you were in any doubt, heartache isn't just for the weekend. Read the full review here.

The Next Day – David Bowie

David Bowie's return last January was a rare thing in world of carefully-controlled information overload - a genuine shock. Now aged 66, Bowie re-emerged with an album that is not the sound of reinvention but the sound of Bowie re-engaged, re-energised, and very confrontational about a lot of things. Not least fame, stupid fame, and if anybody has a right to talk about how we've sacrificed actual art and culture for stupid quick-fix celebrity, it's David Bowie, a man who has spent most of his life blurring the lines between both. So the toxicity of celebrity is a theme on The Next Day as is (once again) the sinister rise of technology and the bloke who was releasing songs online back in 1994, would know about that too. This is a fabulous, vivid and absorbing album from one of the true geniuses in music. It's brilliant. Did you really expect anything less Earthlings? Read the full review here.

Body Music – AlunaGeorge

UK duo Aluna Francis and George Reid update the minimalistic, futuristic beats of early noughties producers Timbaland and The Neptunes on their fantastic debut. Slick, sinuous and sexy, it burbles over with the kind of exacting dance soul last heard from Aaliyah and even Destiny's Child on their wilder rhythmical flights of fancy. They can also be as warped as Scandinavian weird brains The Knife and with the likes of infectious and relentless You Know You Like It and their terrific collaboration with Disclosure on White Noise. Most of all, they also know how to craft a sure-fire hit record. Read the full review here.

DUD OF THE YEAR

Bastille - Pompeii

Welcome to the new age of beige. Bastille, a solo project turned band from Londoner Dan Smith, are the latest in a long line of polite electronic pop acts currently clogging up the charts and radio like bath scum. Smith is a bedroom laptop noodler with delusions of talent and by the end of this syrupy and bland mess you may be hugging your legs to your chin and rocking back and forth in sheer disbelief.Bastille? More like bouncy castle. Read the full review here.

U2 to return to Island Records

After a seven-year absence from the label, U2 are set to return to Island Records for the release of their forthcoming 13th studio album next year.

U2 signed to the legendary imprint which has released albums by Bob Marley, Grace Jones and Tom Waits in 1979, but departed for Mercury Records after expressing their dissatisfaction with the way they were being treated.

However, the band has continued to show its affection for Island, founded in 1959 by Chris Blackwell, by including its logo on their releases even though they had headed to Mercury.

The follow-up to 2009 album No Line on The Horizon, the band's most commercially unsuccessful album in decades, is expected to be released around March.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Bono previewed new song Invisible which is described as "an anthemic number about leaving one's hometown"

Bieber not retiring says his management

In a music industry talking point bearing comparison with Sinatra's on/off retirement, Justin Beiber's management have denied that the tweeny bopper icon is quitting showbiz.

Justin dropped a bombshell earlier this month when he stated that he was stepping down from his role as pop's young dream and then backpeddalled with this tweet:

"The media talks a lot about me.They make a up a lot of lies and want me to fail but I'm never leaving you, being a belieber is a lifestyle . . . Be kind loving to each other, forgive each other as god forgave us through Christ Merry Christmas IM HERE FOREVER".

Now in a story in The Wall Street Journal, the COO of Scooter Braun Projects, Scott Manson, has claimed that the singer is "100 percent" not retiring.

Meanwhile, GM Allison Kaye added: "Justin is a hard working 19-year-old who would prefer that his recent fundraising work in the Philippines and the considerable amount raised for the cause be the media's focus more than the recent reporting on him retiring."

"Regarding his recent tweeting about his 'retirement' Justin felt that this was the best way to respond to the latest in a long line of inaccurate or wildly exaggerated media reports about him. He chose to channel his frustration into playing along with this baseless rumor and even used 'beloved' to tip off his core fans that it wasn't real."

Tennant is baffled by Broadchurch

David Tennant has admitted that he has no idea what's going to happen to his Broadchurch character.

The Scottish actor, who plays DI Alec Hardy in the highly-acclaimed ITV drama, says that he does not know what creator Chris Chibnall has planned for the show's second season.

He told the Metro newspaper: "We don't know where the characters are going. We don't know the story he is telling. Some people say they are in it, I'm not sure that they do, though."

Tennant added that his character "was dying of a heart attack so I don't know how able Alec Hardy will be to do any more crime-fighting; we will have to see."

Far more certain is that the former Doctor Who star will play a role in the US remake of Broadchurch, which will be called Gracepoint.

He will play the chief detective in the investigation - renamed Emmett Carver - while Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn has landed Olivia Colman's role of DI Ellie Miller.

Roberts prides herself on being picky about roles

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 28 Desember 2013 | 23.37

Julia Roberts has admitted that she prides herself on being picky when it comes to choosing film roles, especially now that she is more mature.

The Oscar winning actress told the Los Angeles Times, "I think people like to say that I'm super-picky because of how much I love my kids. But as an actor, I sort of pride myself on the fact that I've always been picky."

She also added that she is more selective about what films she will star in because the kind of roles that used to work for her as a younger star, no longer suit, "There's a couple of things at play. For one, I'm 46 years old, so falling out of chairs isn't as funny. I could break a hip. Certain scenarios that worked 10 years ago aren't as appealing, as applicable, as believable, as original - all those things.''

Roberts can next be seen starring alongside Meryl Streep, Dermot Mulroney and Ewan McGregor in August: Osage County which is set for release on January 24, 2014.

Freeman nearly lost out on Sherlock role

Martin Freeman has revealed that his first audition to play Dr. Watson in Sherlock didn't go very well and he nearly didn't get the part.

The 42-year-old star told Radio Times that he was mugged the day of his audition which left him in a weird head-space, "I'll admit maybe I was a bit stressed. But a week later my agent rang and said, 'Listen, this Sherlock thing, they're sort of under the impression you weren't that into it'.

"And I said, 'Oh, I am really interested. Please call them and let them know that I am interested'. I wasn't being blasé about it at all. I just wasn't on my best day."

His next audition with Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the legendary detective, went a lot better, "I came in again, read with Benedict and it instantly worked, it seemed to me... I thought he was a fantastic actor and there was something about our rhythms, similarities and differences that it just happened."

Sherlock will return to our screens on New Year's Day at 9pm on BBC One.

Line-up for the next Big Reunion has been revealed

Eternal, Damage, A1 and Girl Thing all set to appear in the next series of The Big Reunion.

Another round of 90s popstars have signed up to appear in the hit TV series The Big Reunion in a bid to achieve chart domination once again.

The new series will feature exclusive and explosive accounts from former pop heroes, with revelations about drugs, fights and shattered dreams.

Eternal head the bill, however Easther Bennett, Vernette Bennett and Kéllé Bryan will reunite minus Louise Redknapp.

The band's representative said: "Louise has not ruled out doing something with Eternal and would love the chance to do something with the girls at some point. She has been overwhelmed at the out-pour from fans wanting to see them perform again.

"However, when the time is right she would want it to be something a bit more natural and not for the purpose of a TV show so has ruled out taking part in the Big Reunion."

Another band getting back to together for the show are A1, who will reveal that despite selling out arenas around the world, they found it very difficult to cope after a tragic accident saw four fans fatally crushed at one of their signings in 2002.

Jade Jones, Andrez Harriott, Rahsaan J Bromfield, Noel Simpson and Coree Richards, aka Damage, are also all getting in on the action.

Jade Jones, fiancé of ex-Spice Girl Emma Bunton, confessed recently: " A lot of things were swept under the carpet."

Andrez Harriott continued: 'Drugs came in, that's when it went wrong.'

Girl Thing, which features Westlife's Kian Egan's wife Jodi Albert, have also signed up and they reveal they were promised a career as big as the Spice Girls.

However despite hiring the Eiffel Tower for their million pound launch, Simon Cowell has since said the band was his biggest mistake.

Their third single Pure and Simple was apparently taken from them and given to Hear'Say, and went on to be the fastest selling single in the UK at the time.

The band claimed to have co-written it and say that their backing vocals are still on the record.

Finally, the Daily Mail reports a twist which will see a brand new super-group being formed. The group named 5th story is made up with solo artists Gareth Gates, Adam Rickitt and Kavana, along with Another Level's Dane Bowers and Blazin' Squad's Kenzie.

Keanu Reeves says no to Point Break remake

Keanu Reeves has revealed he has no interest in starring in a planned remake of the 1991 cult movie Point Break.

The 49-year-old Canadian actor starred in the original film, alongside the late Patrick Swayze, which is about a gang of surfers who rob banks.

Swayze was slated to reprise his role as the group leader, Bodhi, but the project came to a halt when the star lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2009.

Alcon Entertainment began work on the film again in 2011 and announced that it wanted to do a remake rather than a sequel.

However, when asked recently by BBC 5 Live radio if he would like to have a part in the new Point Break, Reeves said: "Absolutely not. It's not my place."

Reeves added that he has concerns about remaking the famous film: "If they can find a way to do it that works out good (sic), then God bless them."

Salt screenwriter Kurt Wimmer has been hired to pen the script, while Ericson Core, who has worked as a cinematographer on the Fast and Furious film franchise, will direct.

Casting details have yet to be revealed.

Sebastian Barry, Ali Smith, Edward St Aubyn, Linda Grant, Philip Hensher, E L Doctorow, Marilynne Robinson will also have new books published in 2014.

Haruki Murakami returns with Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki And His Years Of Pilgrimage. Published in Japan earlier this year, the novel sold in excess of a million copies there in a mere six months.

The couple, who went public with their romance in September, have parted ways with a source revealing that they 'just weren't into it anymore'.

At the time Grande told Teen Vogue that she didn't find it tough to spend time together, despite their busy schedules. She said:  "It's not as tough as people would think. We have the same music manager, so we can see each other's schedules and plan little trips as often as we can."

However Grande hinted all was not well the week before Christmas in a interview with a Florida radio station.

When asked about their relationship, she said: "You're a little behind. We're really good friends."

Brad Pitt filmed cameo for 22 Jump Street

Brad Pitt has filmed a cameo for Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's follow-up to 21 Jump Street.

The 50-year-old award winning actor, will play himself as a university librarian, in what is reported to be a very funny and off beat scene.

Pitt was persuaded by Hill to make the quirky appearance after the pair became good friends during the filming of Moneyball in 2011.

The sequel to 21 Jump Street sees hapless cops Jenko (Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) continue their undercover work on a college campus.

In an attempt to blend in with their fellow students Jenko joins the football team while Schmidt becomes part of the art clique as they try to crack their case.

During their investigation the pair stumble upon Pitt inside the campus playing himself as a low-paid librarian.

The talented star then purposefully does some dodgy acting that doesn't go un-noticed by the two undercover cops.

An insider revealed to RadarOnline.com: "The scene is very funny and the guys had a great time doing it.

"Brad was a great sport and the producers were thrilled that he took part."

Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller 22 Jump Street also stars rapper Ice Cube and newcomer Amber Stevens and is due be released next summer.

Fashion saved Lady Gaga from being 'sad'

Pop superstar Lady Gaga has revealed that her costumes and clothes have saved her from being sad.

The 27-year-old Bad Romance hitmaker admitted that her whacky outfit choices are what stops her from getting depressed.

Speaking to Fashion magazine the star said:  "Fashion is that thing that saved me from being sad.

"I've always cared about my costumes and my clothes. When I leave my apartment I like to look pretty for my fans but not [in a] hot sexy girl [way] - I don't care about that. I just want to make you feel something with what I wear.

"I want you to feel happy and enjoy the theatre of my life the way that I do. No matter what happens with my music and wherever I go - that heart of that glamorous girl in New York will never be gone.

"This is who I am and it's never been an act and it's never been marketing. This is me all the way to my core and fashion is a big part of my life."

Lady Gaga also spoke candidly about her long-term relationship with actor Taylor Kinney. She said: "It has been hard for me to find it, but I have found love. When you meet someone that's not intimidated by the amazing people that are around you [or] by the love that you receive - that's love.

"Men weren't always happy for me. It was very challenging to watch a woman be so successful."

Fur, fun and a fond farewell to a favourite are all part of our Christmas Eve TV choices.

The Zoo - Christmas Special, 7.15pm, RTÉ One

Ah, the finest of festive feelgood. Series narrator Tom Dunne joins the human stars of the RTÉ One series around the Christmas table to discuss their highlights of 2013, and the stories involving the residents of Dublin Zoo that tugged at their heartstrings (ours too) the most. We catch up with elephants Upali and Budai, Kafi the gorilla, Jabari the rhino calf, Joey the penguin, DJ the sea lion pup, red pandas Bonnie and Bamber and more. Plus, we're told, there will be a few surprises.

Mel Smith: I've Sort Of Done Things, 9.45pm, BBC Two

We lost one of the greats this year, a man who, along with with Griff Rhys Jones, helped introduce the world of TV comedy to many a way-past-your-bedtime kid - and gave lots of grown-ups something to smile about at the end of a tough day. In this hour-long tribute, family and friends join Rhys Jones to remember a trailblazer who crammed a lot into his life on- and off- camera. Superbad, 12:10am, RTÉ Two

Ok, technically the time slot is Christmas Day - but isn't it always magic how everything just rolls into one at this time of year? And whether you're a Superbad virgin or devotee, the jokes in this coming-of-age caper about two high school best friends (Michael Cera and Jonah Hill) and a third wheel's (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) wild night are still as good.

From Animal House through to Dazed and Confused and all the way up to American Pie, we've been here plenty of times before, but Superbad finds lots of gold in the tried-and-tested set-up. The one-liners and repartee are class and the situations the trio find themselves in - befriending idiotic police officers, crashing a bad guy's party - are priceless. And while the mayhem and vulgarity are top notch, the script also gets the nature of friendship between young men exactly right: the little things that fester, the concerns that can't be raised and the affection that can't be expressed. There may be a lot about balls, but there's plenty of heart, too.

Una Healy 'not rushing' to expand family

Una Healy of The Saturdays was "broody immediately" after giving birth to her daughter Aoife Belle, but now insists she won't be having another child for a least a year.

The 32-year-old from Tipperary welcomed Aoife Belle into the world in March 2012 with her husband, rugby player Ben Foden, but she says she isn't rushing to expand her family.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan Body magazine, Una said: "I was very broody immediately after Aoife's birth. I'm just enjoying Aoife being young.

"I'm excited for The Saturdays to go on tour in 2014, so Ben and I aren't thinking about having another baby just yet . . . "

Meanwhile, Una admits she tried a meal delivery service after Aoife was born in order to lose her baby weight, but she wouldn't do it again because she doesn't agree with fad diets.

"I don't do diets, the only thing I've tried is a meal delivery service six weeks after Aoife was born, but I found myself adding extra carbs to the meals.

"Loads of these 'celeb diets' require strange foods that you have to go searching for - not ideal."

Shane MacGowan's €460k fairytale Christmas

The Pogues' Christmas classic Fairytale of New York has already earned Shane MacGowan a cool €460,000 in royalties over the seasonal period.

The song, which hit No 1 in Ireland on its release in 1987 and which has returned to the top ten numerous times since, has become one of the most beloved and most played Christmas songs of all time.

The Performing Rights Society in Britain estimates that the song had notched up €462,139 in royalties this year but has still come second to Slade's perrenial 1973 hit Merry Christmas Everyone.

Speaking to today's Irish Examiner, MacGowan, who turns 56 on Christmas Day, says: "Given that I don't particularly like Christmas songs: I don't even like White Christmas, it is strange I ended up writing A Fairytale of New York - a Christmas song that gets played every year."

MacGowan wrote the song with fellow Pogue Jem Finer and he has paid tribute to his co-vocalist on the track, the late Kirsty MacColl, who died in tragic circumstances just before Christmas 2000.

"I am grateful people like it so much, I'm very grateful to Christ and his Holy Mother and Joseph and the saints, including my family, that have passed on," MacGowan says. "And I was very grateful to Kirsty MacColl. It would never have been such a big hit without her."

So one more time from the top . . .

Julian Cope pulls out of Belfast festival

Organisers of Belfast's Out to Lunch festival have expressed their shock after singer Julian Cope cancelled his appearance at the event this January over his concerns about the "security situation".

The former Teardrop Explodes singer who has worked as a left of centre solo artist for many years cancelled a gig in the city after a dissident republican bomb was left in the city's Cathedral Quarter last week, not far from where The Out to Lunch festival is staged in the Black Box theatre bar.

Festival organiser Sean Kelly said they were shocked by Cope's withdrawal. "In 15 years of organising festivals in Belfast, it's the first time we've lost an artist due to the security situation," he said.

"We received an email. It was very sudden and inexplicable so we simply released it on our website. People have been critical of the artist, but I don't think we should rush to judgement too much. I take him at his word that he was genuinely fearful for his safety and we just have to deal with that."

RTÉ Ten Christmas Day top TV picks

We meet the new Doctor Who; Shirley MacLaine returns to Downton Abbey; and, yes, it's the Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas Special. Here's our top telly for Christmas Day

Doctor Who, BBC One, 7.30pm

Time waits for no man and tonight we shall shed a small tear as Matt Smith disappears into a vortex and is magically replaced by Peter Capaldi as the Time Lord. This year's 50th anniversary episode was a global phenomenon but somehow this Christmas special should be more fun and more emotional. In tonight's show, we visit a quiet backwater planet but up there in orbit, the massed forces of the universe's deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars - and amongst them, the Doctor is out there rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner. The Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe. Guest stars tonight include Orla Brady.

Downton Abbey, UTV, 8.30pm

What would Christmas be without a two-hour helping of forced manners, fine bone china, and historical inaccuracy? We join the mob of toffs in the big house as the summer season kicks in and as part of Rose's "coming out" (it meant something different back then) she is to be presented at Buckingham Palace. The family and servants are at Grantham House, their London residence, preparing for the busy social program. Not one to miss such a grand occasion, Cora's mother, swaggering dowager Martha Levinson (Shirley MacLaine) makes the journey from New York with her playboy son Harold, fresh from his recent brush with the law. Both outspoken and larger-than-life, they make quite an impression amongst certain members of London's high society, in particular with Lord Aysgarth, played by James Fox.

Anyone for a game of historical charades?

Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas Special, RTÉ One, 9.25pm/BBC One, 9.30pm

There is more than a whiff of Les Dawson circa 1973 about Brendan O'Carroll's foul-mouthed matriarch but it appears that modern audiences like their sitcoms traditional and this crimbo spesh will be one of the most-watched things on telly over the season. In the episode entitled Buckin' Mammy, we find Christmas just round the corner but everyone in the dark as to what Mrs Brown's grandson Bono (my aching sides!) wants for a present. He's already posted his letter off to Santa, so how can Agnes find out in time? Meanwhile, at her family games night, the indomitable Mrs B struggles to control her temper when none of the guests will play by her rules. But at least there shouldn't be any problems with the Christmas tree this year – she's having a very special one delivered . . . wot larks!

But at least there shouldn't be any problems with the Christmas tree this year – she's having a very special one delivered . . . wot larks!

Review: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ***

Looking for a new movie to check out over Christmas? Ben Stiller stars in this remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Read our review here.

Did I just daydream that? After two hours of Ben Stiller's gentle and life-affirming retake of James Thurber's celebrated short story, I was left confused. Had I just witnessed some high-calorie schmaltz or a damn clever tale of personal transformation and the realisation of The American Dream?

Neither way, it's easy to see why this uneven and slghtly tiring Walter Mitty re-take languished in development hell for so long. It does have a few things going for it however, not least of which is Stiller as our daydreaming but not dreamy hero.

He certainly doesn't mug frenetically like Danny Kaye did in the 1947 movie original. Instead when his Walter zones out for flights of fancy he looks serene, finally happy to be released from the chore of dealing with the dolts and dead heads he works with on the soon-to-be closed Life magazine.

The long-running standard-bearer of American photo-journalism is about to end its print edition and go online only and Walter is tasked with locating a missing negative from an all-important assignment by a grizzly photographer/adventurer played by Sean Penn.

The misplaced picture is the one which will make the final cover of Life's print version and Mitty's desperate search for the vital frame will lead him on a global trek that, shucks, teaches him that fantasy is never any substitute for real-life experience.

However, the lessons to be learned from - quite literally - climbing every mountain are deadening after a while as we traverse the globe - from Greenland to Afghanistan - in search of the elusive photographer but it does give Stiller a chance to capture some very spectacular vistas, leading to the impression that this Walter Mitty is actually working for National Geographic and not Life.

Back at the office, he pines after a pretty co-worker Cheryl, played in a similarly downbeat way by Kristen Wiig and there is something warm and believable about their slow courtship. Adam Scott, with a ridiculously sculpted beard, is great as a corporate jerk brought in to oversee Life's transfer to online and his needling of mild-mannered Walter is fun.

It may be short on actual laughs but it looks gorgeous. Stiller makes some nice points about the value of the physical over the abstract but doesn't push it too far. It's a glossy high-concept feel good flick that looks a bit like Life of Pi and has the same big, melancholic heart as Forrest Gump.

Only Fools and Horses to make TV return

Ten years after it last aired, it looks like there could be a new episode of Only Fools and Horses in the pipeline.

The award-winning sitcom, starring David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst as dodgy market traders Del Boy and Rodney Trotter, ran from 1981 until 2003, when it finished after 63 episodes.

All hope of it returning appeared to end when the show's creator John Sullivan died in 2011. However, it has now emerged that his sons Jim and Dan have being working on a new episode.

According to The Times, Jason has been given the script, but is yet to decide if he wants to step back into Derek "Del Boy" Trotter's shoes.

He told the paper: "I've had a quick look at the treatment and it's very good, but I'm saving the proper read-through until there are no distractions. It's not the sort of thing you can muck about with."

Scorsese and DiCaprio heckled at screening

Veteran director Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio were heckled at a screening of their controversial new movie The Wolf of Wall Street at the weekend according to reports.

Scorsese, who has worked with DiCaprio on acclaimed movies such as The Aviator and The Departed, was called "disgusting" by an unnamed screenwriter who clearly was unhappy with the film's graphic portrayal of drug-taking, sex and greed on Wall Street in the 1990s.

The director was also told "shame on you" according to a report on film website The Wrap which had noted a Facebook post from actress Hope Holdiay, who starred in Billy Wilder's 1960 classic The Apartment.

She wrote: "Tonight was torture at the Academy — "The Wolf Of Wall Street" – three hours of torture – same disgusting crap over and over again. After the film they had a discussion which a lot of us did not stay for – the elevator doors opened and Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese and a few others got out.

"Then a screen writer ran over to them and started screaming – shame on you – disgusting."

Jennifer Aniston is being ''slowly convinced'' into reuniting with her Friends co-stars, according to a report.

The 44-year-old We're the Millers actress could reportedly team-up with Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer in 2014.

"But with next year's 20th anniversary [of the show's launch] it will be unavoidable for them to do something together. It's the perfect excuse to talk seriously about a new project."

The source continued: ''It's no secret the whole project will be pinned on Jennifer, who's incredibly busy with her movie career. But she's been slowly convinced that a reunion could be a good thing.''

The insider added: ''Courteney has been telling Jennifer that she and Matthew Perry have still got that amazing chemistry after shooting just a few scenes with him guest-starring on her TV show Cougar Town. It was as though no time has passed at all.''

EastEnder hoping for a longer stay

Actor Derek Martin, who is set to return for a number of EastEnders episodes this Christmas, says he "can't help hoping" that his time on the show will be extended.

Martin's character, Charlie Slater, was originally set to be killed off in 2011, but in the end the soap's bosses decided he would go to live with his daughter in the north of England.

Martin told The Mirror of his return: "It was wonderful to go back after all this time. I got a call saying they wanted me to do an episode for Christmas and it turned out to be three. I walked into the Queen Vic on my first day and it was like I'd never left."

Martin said he was "absolutely gutted" when Charlie was written out of the soap.

"You know it's part and parcel of the profession to be in and out of work but after thinking Charlie was part of the future of the show, I was shocked," he said. "I simply didn't see it coming."

As to the future, he said: "Who knows, if Charlie goes down well this Christmas, maybe it will all become more permanent. Nothing's been said but I can't help hoping."

Ferrell added: ''We didn't want Kanye to get upset, but at the same time, we kind of had to film.''

Donal Gallagher on Rory Gallagher's Kickback City

With the new, noir-themed Rory Gallagher box set Kickback City featuring on many a Christmas want list (and in many a stocking), Harry Guerin catches up with the project's co-ordinator, Rory's brother Donal.

He talks about bringing together the crime fiction-flavoured studio and live tracks; the specially written, Rory-inspired short story by author Ian Rankin; the illustrations by Timothy Truman and the audio book of the whodunit, which is narrated by Aidan Quinn.

Harry Guerin: How long has the idea for Kickback City been kicking around?
Donal Gallagher: In truth, it's about six/seven years. But it was on a backburner and then about two-and-a-half years ago I picked up on it again. By the time all the elements got put together it took two years or so. Because one [part] is obviously to give Ian Rankin the time to write the story, and then you could only do the drawings after you had the story. So, it was juggling a lot of things, plus refining all the drawings that we needed and what was required.

It's beautifully put together – a real labour of love.
I think we initially started out with the idea that there would be less graphics, or not so many graphics: it was just going to be an album cover. But then Ian's story was so involved I felt it had to be illustrated more. Not everyone is the greatest reader, and I just felt it would be a shame if they didn't get into the story somehow. I read the story when I first got it three times and didn't get the plot to be quite honest! Out of that grew the notion to put in the audio [spoken word] disc as well.

Kickback City

So how did you decide that Ian Rankin was the man to write a short story based on Rory's music and lyrics?
I was in a studio and somebody alerted me to the fact that they were reading this Ian Rankin book that mentioned Rory. So I went out and got the book; it was called A Question of Blood. While reading that there was a whole terrific passage about John Rebus, Ian's detective, being involved in a court case where the decision had gone against him. So he leaves the court very depressed, gets in his car and rummages around the glove compartment for a Rory Gallagher cassette he knows he carries called Deuce. He's about to put it on to listen to a track called The Devil Made Me Do It but then decides that would depress him even more because the court evidence was that the Devil made the guy do it – and he got away with it!

And to get from there to getting him onboard?
It was a very interesting piece and I thought from that writing, 'God, Ian must really get that Rory loved crime novels'. It was so intermeshed. So I wrote a thank you letter to Ian via his publisher, not particularly expecting a response. And then Ian came back to me directly and said, 'I'm delighted to hear from you. I didn't realise your brother was a big crime [fiction] fan. Please tell me more and what books he read and what were the other tracks you're referring to that had inspired Rory's writing in [on] crime. So I burnt him a disc of the tracks and when I sent that off to him I said, 'PS, you never know: one day we might do an album on Rory's crime tracks. Would you be up for writing a few sleeve notes?' Ian responded and said, 'I'm your man'.

That was years ago, then?
That was on the backburner for a few years and then the idea came up again of doing a crime album up at [Rory's label] Sony. And I said, 'Well I've actually been in touch with Ian Rankin'. And the [record company] guy said, 'You're kidding me?! If you could get him to write the sleeve notes that would be fantastic'. My son Dan, who was in the meeting, said, 'Do you think you could get him to write something a little bit more than sleeve notes?'

It's amazing how an idea can gather momentum.
I was headed to Scotland and I dropped Ian a note and we met for a pint and I ran the idea past him. I had now about 40 tracks that I felt were kind of jigsaw puzzle pieces of a crime story. So he could play around with the puzzle and see what he could make of it and if he could thread the songs through a story. He was up for that.

Was it hard to pick the tracks?
In a sense, the tracks were dictated to a degree by Ian Rankin. It was nearly 40 [he had to choose from], and then I realised afterwards what a cheek I had – I sent him up 40 sets of lyrics as well! I must've blocked his email address because he came back and he said, 'I'm a pen and paper man myself'! He filtered through the various tracks and lyrics and identified the characters in the songs. To keep the cohesion we had to largely follow who he had written about or made a reference to – Sinner Boy, for instance.

The box set and story are illustrated in hardboiled style by Timothy Truman, who's done a lot of comics and worked with The Grateful Dead. How did he come into the frame?
Parallel to all this going on we'd come across a comic in America called Grimjack. In an episode of Grimjack, Grimjack is protecting his guitarist buddy from an assassination attempt. The guitarist buddy is Rory - the character is called Jim Lanyon but the actual drawings were Rory all the way through. I contacted Timothy Truman and he said he was a huge fan of Rory and that [he] was the model in the story. So I said, 'Look, I'm hoping to get this crime story done. If it was successful would you be interested in doing some graphics for us to illustrate the book side of it?' And he said yes he was, so we were off and running.

So where did Aidan Quinn come in as the narrator for the audio version of the story?
By the end of it all we had so much material, but I felt it needed something to pull it together, particularly for the non-reader. I'd been listening to audio books and I thought, 'If we could get somebody who would have the right accent...' It would be getting someone that Ian Rankin would be happy with as well. It was Ian's story, and it's like somebody doing a cover version of a song: you have to get it right and add something new to it. There were a few names we looked at but Aidan we had a contact with and Aidan was somebody I had met in Midleton some years earlier. I'm good friends with his brother Declan. So we went to Aidan and he agreed. Dan, my son went over to record him in New York and he did the reading. Ian Rankin is blown away by it.

If ever a project has proven the maxim 'Think big' it's this one.
It's funny how the whole project can spin-off in so many different ways. I'd always admired the aspect of an artist being influenced by another artist, say when Don McLean wrote Vincent. The fact that the artist inspired the songwriter to write a song, y'know? I love that 'artists influencing artists' scenario. What's been great with this project is that there is a background film to it, the making of it, which is up on YouTube. Some guys at Sony, some of the younger guys who work in the video department, they heard about the project and they came along and did a video for it, a graphic video. Within the camp there's all different people finding different ways to roll the snowball into a bigger one!

Well, after all this it sounds like you could embark on a new career as a movie producer – you'll have to bring Kickback City to the big screen to finish the job.
And we'll have to get Aidan Quinn for it too!

Could you see yourself doing another Rory release united by a theme? There are still a lot of tracks like, say, Last of the Independents you could use.
Honestly, it would be nice to think you could do something. But at the same time the way this has fallen together and come together it's nice that it's unique and stands alone. I'm sure at the record company they'll be saying, 'Gather all the love songs and we'll do a Mills & Boon'!

As keeper of the flame, what are your plans for next year?
Nothing is set in [stone]. This project has gone back and gone back and gone back... We had stuff perhaps that we were looking to release next year – you'll  have the 40th anniversary of [live album] Irish Tour. There's a lot of stuff from that whole tour, all the live sessions, if you want to do a commemorative-style thing. We're so late in this year [with Kickback City] that I've resisted any talk of what we'll do next year with the record company. The terrible thing is once you start saying what the next project is to them they forget about the one they should be looking at! It's like if you have two footballs on the pitch – you get no goals!

Kickback City is out now on Sony Music.

Steve Carell undergoes hip surgery

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 21 Desember 2013 | 23.37

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues star Steve Carell has undergone hip replacement surgery to correct an old ice hockey injury.

Speaking to US TV host David Letterman, 51-year-old Carell insisted that he did not do any research before the operation.

He said: "I thought, if I watch this [research videos], if I actually know what's going to happen to my body, I'm not going to do this. I just found a good doctor and went ahead with it..."

Carell continued: "Because essentially what they are doing is dislocating your hip, they're cutting it out and they're putting a different one in. So it's fairly traumatic to your body."

He added: "So I showed up to the hospital the morning of [the operation] and again, I knew nothing. A woman... showed up and said she was going to shave my groin...

"I had no idea how big the incision was. The doctor came in and we talked about anaesthesia, because I could have had local [anaesthetic]. You can do general or local and you [are] sort of in a foggy state, as they put it, and I asked the doctor what would he suggest and he said, 'You don't want any memory of this at all'. So I opted for general.

"They also asked at that point, which was about 30 minutes before the operation, 'Now what would you like it made out of?' Like I was picking out the interior of a car... So I was picking this substance that was going to be in my body for the rest of my life.... I opted for the ceramic."

Despite his fears prior to the surgery, Carell said that everything went well: "Since then, it (his hip) has been fantastic. I am going to start (hockey) in the new year."
