Cruise may be more Irish than he thinks!

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 31 Maret 2013 | 23.37

Tom Cruise is set to discover some exciting new Irish ancestry on his visit to Dublin next week.

The 50 year-old actor is jetting in to the capital next Wednesday to promote his latest flick, Oblivion. Tom is scheduled to be presented a Certificate of Irish Ancestry from the Department of Foreign Affairs, which well and truly confirms Tom's Irish pedigree.

New genealogy research commissioned by The Gathering will be revealed next Wednesday that proves Tom Cruise is more Irish than we thought.

Although the Hollywood actor can trace his roots to Kilteevan, Co. Roscommon through the Mapother family, new in-depth research has revealed that there is another branch of his family that lived in Co. Dublin, a definitive blood line.

Tom Cruise's visit to Ireland will be hosted by Universal Pictures International Ireland. "We are thrilled Tom is returning to Ireland to launch his latest movie, Oblivion. It's a huge bonus that we can share this new information with Tom about his Dublin heritage" said the studio's Irish General Manager, Dave Burke.

Also accompanying Tom on his visit are director Joseph Kosinki and leading lady, former Bond girl, Olga Kurylenko. The premiere, in Dublin's Savoy Cinema, is set to be one of the biggest red carpet events ever seen in the city.

Scorsese for TV Gangs of New York

Martin Scorsese is developing a television series based on his film Gangs of New York.

Revealed this week, the Oscar-winning director is partnering with Miramax for a series which will expand upon the 19th century New York gang culture that was the basis of the 2002 film.

The film was originally inspired by the 1928 real-life events captured in the book The Gangs of New York: An Informal History of the Underworld. Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz all starred in the film, which went on to win a BAFTA for Day-Lewis and Golden Globe Award for Scorsese.

In a statement released this week, Miramax confirm the series development. The statement reads: 'The series will draw from the multitude of events surrounding organized gangs at the turn of the century and shortly thereafter in America, not only in New York, but in other cities such as Chicago and New Orleans and the birth of organized crime in America'.

"This time and era of America's history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two hour film," Scorsese explains. "A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life. I am excited to partner with Miramax in telling these stories".

"No one better exemplifies what the new Miramax is and will be better than Martin Scorsese. His dedication to quality and the art of storytelling continues to excite everyone that works with him and watches his films and television programs. We could not think of a better partner for this project than the creator of the wonderful film on which it is based," stated Richard Nanula, chairman of Miramax and a principal at Colony Capital.

Brosnan role brought back cancer sorrow

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan has opened up about his new film role dealing with love and cancer, hitting close to home as he recalls his own tragedy of losing his first wife to cancer.

"I went through it all, very publicly," 59 year-old Brosnan explains to The Daily Mail. "Such things draw a mark across your heart and it's always a part of your life. To watch someone you love have their life eaten away - bit by bit, by this insidious and horrid disease - becomes an indelible part of your psyche".

Brosnan's first wife, Australian actress Cassandra Harris, lost her battle with ovarian cancer 22 years ago, aged 43 in 1991. At the time, the couple had one son together, Sean, now a 29 year-old actor living in California, and Harris' two children, Charlotte and Chris, from a previous relationship who Brosnan adopted.

"When I received this script, the challenge of playing this part was not lost on me," Brosnan explains. "I've sat in rooms with doctors and awaited the outcome of examinations, for results to come back. I've opened letters with bad news in them. I know what it's like, I really do".

Brosnan plays Philip in upcoming Danish romantic comedy Love Is All You Need, alongside actress Trine Dyrholm. Hairdresser Ida, played by Dyrholm, is recovering from treatment for breast cancer when she meets widower Philip in the Amalfi Coast.

"An actor has to draw on all his life experiences, good and bad. You have to be vulnerable and sensitive to the circumstances in a script which you know will affect everyone," Brosnan explains. "So I know the pain and the agony of waiting and being powerless".

Since Cassandra's death, Brosnan managed to find love again with journalist Keely Shaye Smith. They married in Mayo in 2001 and had two more children, now aged 16 and 12.

Reflecting, Brosnan says: "Cancer is a very sad thing but you can always take something from every experience. This film is proof of that. I've always been a positive thinker".

"Ups and downs are what life is all about. But the memory of Cassie and her fight against cancer is never forgotten."

Love Is All You Need is released in mid-April.

Corrie actress wants Katy to go wild

Coronation Street actress Georgia May Foote has said she hopes her character, Katy, becomes more of a wild child and "goes off the rails".

"I don't know if Katy will get any naughtier," Foote told The Sun. "But I hope she does. I'd love her to get really feisty and be a wild child and go off the rails. Any extreme you get to play is always fun".

The 22 year-old actress plays teen mum Katy Armstrong on the cobbles and says "It's nice to see the sexy side of Katy, to see her dressed up and going out to have fun. It's strange being sexy because I've never really done anything like this".

In recent months, viewers have watched as Katy embarked upon a whirlwind affair with Ryan (Sol Heras) and accept an engagement proposal from boyfriend Chesney (Sam Aston).

Katy has come in to her own, Georgia explains, "I've grown up. I feel like I'm finally a woman and it's nice to let rip and show that off. Before, Katy was stuck between being a schoolgirl and a mum and it's nice to have made the jump".

"I feel like she's caught up with me" Foote adds, who recently got engaged to her long-term boyfriend.

DeHaan talks Spiderman diet

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 30 Maret 2013 | 23.37

He's set to fill the shoes of James Franco, portraying the character of Harry Osborn in the new Spiderman film, and Dane DeHaan is feeling the physical pressure.

Talking to Vulture recently, the Chronicle actor opened up about having to change his training regime and diet to feel comfortable stepping into the role.

DeHaan discussed the highly-coveted role with Vulture, revealing that he is bulking up to play Osborn.

"I've actually gained, like, ten pounds! I look a million times better with my shirt off than I did two months ago," the actor explained.

"It's about having the stamina and the strength to do a movie like that. It's the longest shoot I'll be doing, and I just want to be ready to do it."

DeHaan added that he is now much more comfortable to go in to the role after seeing a physical change. I'm pretty much ready to shoot. I'm totally good to go. I feel like I'm ready to be Harry Osborn".

Though, he commented further: "It's not about becoming super bulky. It's about becoming fit. Harry Osborn, he's a trust-fund baby. He probably has personal trainers. He probably has someone making his food".

"He's going to look like he works out, so I have to look like I work out - but I don't have to look like Christian Bale as Batman. It's not that extreme. I just look a lot better naked," the actor concluded.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due for release in April 2014.

Voice winner to release autobiography

It hasn't even been a year since she fought off competition from rivals to be crowned the first winner of The Voice UK, but it seems Leanne Mitchell's promises of success may not come full circle.

The 29 year-old singer, who won the first series last Spring, had the live tour featuring the top eight finalists scrapped due to poor ticket sales followed by a debut single, a cover of Whitney Houston's Run To You, which failed to reach the Top 40.

Recent rumours suggest that an album may not surface from the singer. However in a recent blog for the BBC show, Mitchell explains that her album is due out in late May while her focus also lies with an upcoming autobiography she has written, entitled Finding My Voice.

No follow-up single has been scheduled as of yet from the singer.

Her mentor on the show, Sir Tom Jones, has been quick to defend her, saying Mitchell's career is out of her hands. "I think they [Universal] rushed it", he explains.

"The one problem is if you win The Voice, it's out of your hands completely. Because you're signed to Universal Records, with management, agency, the whole thing," Jones added.

"So you can't do much for that person after you've got that person to win. If you want to do something with them further, it's better that they don't win."

The series runners-up, Bo Bruce, Tyler James and Vince Kidd, have had tastes of success with their releases since the series ended.

Series two kicks off tonight at 7pm on BBC 1.

Lohan dad wants conservatorship

Michael Lohan has spoken out about seeking conservatorship of his troubled daughter's estate.

Lindsay Lohan's estranged father has spoken to Now Magazine, saying "Lindsay's life is out of control. She's living at friends' places, not working and has no-one good standing by her".

"I'd raise the motion of a conservatorship but I don't want control of her money - are you kidding? I'd want the court to appoint the appropriate people."

Lohan is currently in Brazil promoting a clothing line but has been pictured in bizzare situations. The actress appeared in court last week and was charged with a 90-day stint in rehab after lying to prosecutors about violating her probation for a jewellery theft case from 2011.

Michael adds: "What the judge has done with an order for 90 days in lockdown is a good thing - Lindsay needs to get her life back on track. The problem is, they gave her until May 2 to find a place".

"They should've put her in a facility immediately. Lindsay needs daily therapy to address her problems. She needs to be given the chance to get better under supervision.

"I won't stop shouting for my daughter to get help. If you want to save her life, put her in rehab now. If she doesn't go, the consequences are unthinkable."

This year's series kicks off with a group performance by the four coaches, Jessie J, will.i.am, Danny O'Donoghue and, good grief, Tom Jones. Once each coach has a full team, they will advise and train them through the remaining stages until one Artist is named The Voice UK. Get earmuffs ready for lots of Whitney- style warbling - it hasn't gone away you know- and soulful young fellows singing songs with two chords. Which might be all you need, although Teenage Kicks, which sounds like the essence of pop simplicity had all of four chords.

Jessie J talks The Voice Series 2

Jessie J has opened up about her second series as a judge on The Voice UK, saying "I know that not everyone is going to like what I say or do".

"Last year I held back because I was aware that the public didn't really know who I was. I'm less bothered this year by what people think," Jessie J tells the Radio Times ahead of the debut of series two of The Voice UK tonight.

"I actually feel a lot more at ease with the role and the show and more confident knowing that I have experience as a coach."

Speaking about her approach towards the next batch of hopefuls, the 25 year-old said "This show is about helping someone become an artist and that's where my strength is... bringing people on, teaching them, not just singing, but how to conduct themselves, how to become aware of themselves".

"I do follow my instincts but it doesn't mean I'm good at it" the singer confesses. "But on the show, I know that not everyone is going to like what I say or do, so I have to trust myself. It's not easy."

Bids in for 2fm Big Egg Hunt masterpieces

The final bids are in for RTÉ 2fm's Rick O'Shea and Cormac Battle's Easter egg masterpieces in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation's Big Egg Hunt.

Over 100 fibre glass eggs were secreted around Dublin ahead of a big charity Egg Hunt and a number of them were decorated by well-known faces such as Guggi, Felim Egan and Rasher, Joe Duffy, Fashion Designer John Rocha, The Strypes and the 2fm presenters.

Their colourful, original hand-painted eggs attracted a lot of attention with DoneDeal agreeing to donate ten percent of all ads placed in April to The Jack & Jill Foundation (plus Console and the Heart Children Foundation) and Battle's egg was sponsored by Paddy Power for €3,000.

However neither of those generous, charity supporting companies get to go home with the egg instead they go to the highest bidder. The winning bidder for O'Shea's egg is Golden Irish Eggs in Castleblayney with a winning bid of €1,800.

The lucky person to go home with Battle's Mr. Bump is Tom Murphy's Garage in Farranfore thanks to their winning bid of €1,900.

Cormac Battle's Mr. Bump and Rick O'Shea's egg are going to good homes for The Jack & Jill Foundation

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, O'Shea said: "To be honest we've both been blown away by the fact that anyone wanted to bid on our eggs.

"We're not artists, we're chancers, frankly. That, combined, they've made so much money for such a worthy cause is brilliant for all concerned."

Battle added: "I am no artist so the fact that my Mr Bump egg has raised so much money is a total shock to me.

"But hand on heart, the biggest thrill is that the current bidders will be giving it to the Cardiac unit in Crumlin's Children's hospital which means an awful lot to me"

Oliver Callan back for Bank Holiday fun

Comedy satirist Oliver Callan is back with a brand new Bank Holiday comedy show on Monday 1st April at 1.30pm, RTE Radio 1.

Callan's Kicks is the latest brainchild of the impressionist who rose to fame through his work on RTÉ 2fm's Nob Nation and TV appearances on The Saturday Night Show.

The Monaghan mimic said: "I'm going to continue to tackle official Ireland in Callan's Kicks".

"Politics, sport, entertainment and media figures will feature strongly and the series will focus more on satire with a message rather than cheap gags".

The former journalist who appeared on RTÉ 2fm's Nob Nation and on TV on The Saturday Night Show added: "If Nob Nation was an irreverent teenager, then Callan's Kicks is definitely the more mature adult."

He said: "We won't be holding back for fear of upsetting the rich and powerful, but we won't set out to be nasty or personal either.

"Ireland is still in turmoil and there is still a lot wrong with the State in terms of cronyism, hypocrisy and a failure to punish those who've destroyed the economy and reputation of the land."

Callan is also set to bring his range of characters to the Olympia Theatre, Dublin and the INEC, Killarney in April and May.

Revenge finale set to "rock Emily"

The creator of US drama Revenge says that the season two finale will "rock Emily to her core".

The show stars actress Emily VanCamp as Emily Thorne - a young woman who returns to the Hamptons to get her own back on the people who destroyed her life.

After an often baffling season two - where things got rather complicated - creator Michael Kelley insists that viewers will see plenty of the storyline wrapped up in the last episode.

He told Entertainment Tonight: "We knew very early on what this finale was going to be, and it's going to rock Emily to her core.

"It will make the whole Initiative storyline resonate emotionally with everyone, so people understand what we've been laying down and why."

He also hinted that Emily will have a lot of self-discovery ahead of her - part of which will include learning more about her framed father.

Kelley added: "I would like to spend a little more time in The Hamptons next season. Get back in touch with that world - especially those Hamptons parties.

"I'm also interested in looking into the idea of nature versus nurture - whether Emily has a mental illness like her mother and if that will manifest.

"Emily is going to have a self-awareness revelation in season three where she needs to confront her father's imperfections [as she] learns new things about her father."

Revenge continues on Tuesdays on RTÉ Two.

70-year-old Ford played dashing pilot Han Solo in the original movies, has said that he is not willing to publicly discuss Episode 7 "yet".

He hinted last week that he would return alongside Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher in director JJ Abrams's Star Wars sequel, but he was just a bit Yoda when quizzed about his participation.

On the Box - TV Preview

Doctor Who, Charlie Murphy, Game of Thrones and a movie-themed strand on RTÉ One - there's a lot to like about and look at over the coming days on TV.

John Byrne's TV choices for the week ahead (Sat Mar 30 - Fri Apr 05)

Pick of the week

Doctor Who (Saturday, BBC One)

The pressure's got to be on here, as the much-loved sci-fi show begins its 50th anniversary celebrations. In this opening episode - entitled The Bells of Saint John - takes up where we left off last time and the Doctor's search for Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) brings him to modern day London, where wifi is everywhere, and it could be said that humanity swims around in a wi-fi soup. But something dangerous is lurking in the signals, picking off minds and imprisoning them. As Clara becomes the target of this rather insidious menace, the Doctor races to save her - and the world, of course - from an ancient enemy. I just fell in love with Saturdays once more.

Star of the week

Charlie Murphy

The Village (Sunday, BBC One)
Not content with being extremely talented, Wexford wonder Charlie Murphy (y'know, Siobhan from Love-Hate) is also making serious waves across the Irish Sea with this new drama for the Beeb. Cast alongside acting heavyweights such as John Simm and Maxine Peake won't do her any harm in what promises to be an epic drama, charting the life and turbulent times of one English village across the whole of the 20th century through the eyes of one individual (something like Heimat, the German serial from 1984). It's written by Bafta-winning writer Peter Moffat, whose CV includes legal drama Silk, which also starred Maxine Peake. So, yes please. This could be very good indeed.
Says Murphy: "I play Martha Lane. She has just moved to the village because her father runs a Methodist Church there. So she's a bit of an outsider at the beginning. She's young and full of energy and morals. She becomes very hands-on with the fallen characters in the village - trying to save their souls, but with all this she's still a young woman."

Starting this week

Game of Thrones (Monday, Sky Atlantic)

Back for a third round of sex, death and intrigue: get ready to return to Westeros as the latest season of the acclaimed Game of Thrones comes to Sky Atlantic just a day after its US broadcast. Not a fan myself, but I know I'm in a tiny minority. In the first episode, King's Landing continues to be a cesspit of manipulation and machinations and Sansa, growing in confidence under the watchful eye of the Machiavellian Littlefinger, is keen to join in. Elsewhere in the capital, Tyrion is after his just rewards for the part he played in the Battle of the Blackwater, but with his menacing father Tywin now commanding Joffrey's ear as well as the fearsome Lannister forces he'll be lucky to be given even the leftover morsels from the ever-more terrifying boy-king's plate. Hmm. I'm bored already.

Also starting this week:

The Consumer Show (Tuesday, RTÉ One)
Keelan Shanley returns (without the bould Eddie Hobbs) to lead a team that includes Bill Tyson and newcomers Kathriona Devereux and Tadhg Enright to take up issues facing Irish shoppers.

The Voice UK (Saturday, BBC One)
You know the drill. It's the same karaoke-fest as the Irish version, but it's got Danny O'Donoghue instead of Bressie in the judges' seats - plus Tom Jones and Will.i.am. Ant & Dec are on elsewhere . . .

Scott & Bailey (Wednesday, UTV)
Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp return as the formidable crime-fighting duo in eight new episodes - first up, a worried neighbour knocks on Janet's door as a neighbour's home smells like trouble.

Touch (Tuesday, Sky 1)
However did they manage a second season of this nonsense?

Ending this week

One Born Every Minute (Wednesday, Channel 4)
17-year-old Beth prepares to give birth to the baby she shares with Dominic, the guy she met in McDonalds. If it's a boy, will they call him Ronald?

Drama of the week

Elementary (Tuesday, Sky Living)

Great fun, this, although some weeks you have to groan at the clues Sherlock discovers ('This is a paw-print from a dyslexic, grey-haired Afghan Hound - of which there are only two in all of Manhattan'). Holmes is usually the one in this show nursing a slapped wrist, but this time Detective Marcus Bell is in the firing line. Shot at from a moving car, he survives unharmed and immediately begins pursuing the owner of the vehicle, a local criminal who's no ordinary street thug. Sherlock and Joan initially think it is a clear-cut case of revenge at the hands of one of Bell's past arrests. But when the chief suspect is found dead and the evidence implicates their NYPD colleague, Holmes and Yoko must figure out whether Marcus is being framed - or guilty as charged.

Comedy of the week

The Middle (Friday, Sky 1)

One of the sweetest shows on TV, The Middle features a host of great characters, but the best of all - the supremely optimistic Sue Heck - is played with tremendous enthusiasm by Eden Sher. This week sees Mike and Frankie start to feel guilty about not being able to spend enough quality time with Axl, Sue and Brick, so they decide to dedicate each day of a three-day weekend to one of them. Axl who chooses to go paintballing, Sue plans an exhausting itinerary consisting of 17 separate activities, while all Brick wants to do is attend the Planet Nowhere sci-fi book convention - far, far away.

Documentary of the week

See You at the Pictures (Monday, RTÉ One)

This Easter RTÉ celebrates Ireland at the Movies with a series of documentaries, films and performances that highlight the central role that the cinema plays in Irish life. This new initiative celebrates the influence of Ireland on Hollywood and the big screen - bringing viewers some of the best acclaimed Irish films and special events by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
See You at the Pictures is a brand new, feature-length documentary which looks at movie-going in Ireland throughout the decades.

Corrie's Karl is only getting started

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 27 Maret 2013 | 23.37

Fans of Coronation Street have seen a dark side to Karl Munro in recent weeks and the actor who plays him, John Michie, has said there's more in store! Warning: Spoiler Alert!

Over 10 million people tuned in to see Karl try to burn down the Rovers Return in retaliation for Stella's relationship with Jason Grimshaw which has resulted in one death (firefighter Toni Griffiths) and Sunita Alahan is fighting for life in hospital.

Speaking to Digitalspy, Michie had this to say about playing the 'new' Karl: "The first thing is that it's really interesting to play. Karl now has these strange thoughts in his mind all the time. There's a lot more going on in Karl's head, so I'm enjoying that side of it.

"I suppose it's also enjoyable because it creates great situations with the other characters. At the moment, the audience knows what's going on but the other characters don't, and I think that's always fun for the viewers."

Just some of the mayhem that Karl unleashed when he burned down the Rovers Return

He shared his view on what Karl is hoping will happen to Sunita: "It's strange, because like I said, Karl doesn't want to be responsible for anyone's death. However, at the same time, he knows that Sunita has the knowledge to put him down. If she exposes what he's done, he'll go away for a long time - if not for life. Karl is struggling within himself and he is prepared to let Sunita go to save himself.

"Karl's an operator - he always has been and always will be! He actually doesn't find it that hard to physically hide his guilt. The only thing is that he is suffering incredible emotional turmoil from the guilt that he feels."

Michie also hints at further interesting drama and danger for Jason because he suspects that Karl was the fire starter: "Jason tries to wind Karl up a bit, which is a bit dangerous considering the state that Karl's in!

"He's definitely someone who Karl is beginning to hate more and more. I think Jason needs to watch his step!"

Poor Stella could also be in danger: "Karl is definitely making the moves on Stella, in a slightly obsessive way.

"He's trying hard to calm himself and be as normal as possible. However, because he's in such an emotional state, he finds it hard to approach Stella in a natural, normal way."

EastEnder discusses baby bombshell

One of the stars of EastEnders has been discussing next week's episode where their character receives unexpected baby news.

Warning: spoiler alert!

Kirsty (Kierston Wareing) tells Max (Jake Wood) that she is expecting his child.

Actor Wood told Inside Soap: "Max is deeply shocked when Kirsty blurts out that she's pregnant and his initial reaction is one of disbelief.

"Max can be a very good husband when he needs to be. He's an old-fashioned man and he'll stick up for those he loves. That's something Kirsty's never had in a relationship and it means a lot to her. However, a baby is not something that Max would wish for at this moment in time."

Wood added: "Max is a good dad and he loves his kids, but having a baby with Kirsty is not something he wants right now. This could ruin any chance for him to get back with Tanya (Jo Joyner)!"

The scenes will air on BBC One and RTÉ One on Friday April 5.

The Frames movie gets release date

The Frames: In the Deep Shade, a feature film documenting the enduring Irish band, has been confirmed for an Irish cinema release on April 19.

Shot by photographer Conor Masterson over 18 months, the film received its world premiere at the recent Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.

Masterson, who has photographed The Frames since 1998, bills the film as "a stark portrait of an extraordinary band", who have played together for over 20 years.

"When the 20th anniversary was approaching I suggested filming at one of their smaller gigs, to get some footage in a more intimate venue, close up," he said. "Glen [Hansard, The Frames frontman] had seen a personal art film I made in Paris and suggested I make a film with the same loose, roaming aesthetic.

"From the very beginning I decided this was a poetic film that would not be afraid to take liberties with linear narrative. What appealed to me was the chemistry and the family spirit that they all have."

In the film, Hansard explains why The Frames have worked together for so long: "You have to double-up on any eye contact with this band. To use the old analogy of robbing a bank, it's a tight operation and if you get it wrong somebody's gonna get hurt."

The film will open at selected cinemas, including the Light House Cinema Dublin and Triskel Cork, on April 19 ahead of screenings at selected locations around Ireland.

RTÉ TEN's Top Telly picks for Tuesday, March 26

Living the Wildlife, 7.00pm RTÉ One

Colin takes to the high seas in search of blue sharks off the coast of Cork. Setting out from Kinsale, he joins skipper Butch Roberts on an angling trip. Not too long ago, blue shark angling in Ireland was a brutal affair in which caught sharks frequently died on board ship, but thankfully, times have changed. Irish anglers now contribute to one of the largest tagging programmes anywhere in the world, catching and releasing sharks after fitting them with tags supplied by the Irish Fisheries Board and recording measurements for research purposes. This has been extremely useful in compiling a database of shark numbers and sizes off the coast of Ireland.

666 Park Avenue, 10.00pm ITV2

The curious goings-on at The Drake on Park Avenue - (where evil, obsession and the supernatural are all included in the rent)- continue apace. The aftermath of the Dorans' Halloween party leaves everyone with a kind of psychic hangover. Jane is devastated by the lack of support not only from the detectives investigating the case, but from Henry, leading to repercussions in their relationship. Meanwhile, Dr. Evans, who suffers from a gambling addiction, becomes beholden to Gavin in order to pay off a large debt. Finally, Gavin tracks down the person responsible for endangering Olivia and stealing his property. He is determined to end the trouble, or risk losing The Drake and everything he owns. And in one horrifying moment, Jane pieces together how is she is connected to the history of the building.

Shameless, 10.00pm Channel 4

Chesney's having a rough day at work. His chillers have broken, but on the hunt for replacements he meets Remona, a feisty Muslim pharmacist. Within no time he decides to refit Chesco, add a chemist and give Remona the job of running it. But has he acted too rashly? When Avril loses her job, Patreesha insists that she goes to work at the car wash she owns with her husband, Bernard. But Patreesha is in for a shock when she investigates their business further. Elsewhere, Kassi, Shane and Jamie are suited and booted for a big night on the town, but things don't go according to plan.

Saoirse Ronan challenged by The Host

Saoirse Ronan has said that playing the part of two characters in The Host was challenging.

The 18-year-old Irish actress, who plays the part of a girl whose body is taken over from an alien soul, admitted that it was a difficult role to take on.

Speaking to MTV, Saoirse said: ''It was challenging but it was great at the same time because I'm either playing one or I'm playing the other, or I'll switch between the two in one scene.

''So you'll map that out a bit whenever that happens.''

However, Saoirse did explain that she did enjoy taking on the challenge of playing two people living in one body, adding: ''I really liked it because for the majority of the shoot, I was playing Wanda, who's - she's a great character to play, but she's a perfect Soul and doesn't really feel any negative emotions.

''So I could go from playing the perfect being to someone who's a real fighter, who's really kinda gutsy, who has a mouth on her, and it was really nice to be able to do that.''

Fisher opens up on Cohen marriage

Isla Fisher has opened up about her marriage to comedian Sacha Baron Cohen.

The actress discussed their relationship in an interview with C magazine, saying: "It's definitely not a normal relationship. You know there have been times in the past with the guerrilla style film making of Borat and Bruno where there were surreal conversations: 'How many people are suing us? Are you wanted in any states? Are you alive?'"

Fisher, who converted from the Methodist religion to Judaism after marrying Cohen, also spoke about her new religion, saying: "I love the focus on family, food and laughter. You know, I didn't get to go to university because I've been acting since I was a kid.

"So for me, studying theology was also fascinating. I love Judaism."

The couple are parents to two daughters, five-year-old Olive and two-year-old Elula, which has changed Fisher's approach to her filming career.

She explained: "It's all about location because of the kids. Then it boils down to the filmmaker and the role and the cast. It's definitely different than it used to be. Location wasn't even a consideration, unless it was Syria or somewhere.

"I breastfed both my kids for two years so, you know it was very tiring emotionally and physically. I'm not sure I'd want to do another lead at this juncture in my life. It's why ensemble pieces are so attractive to me."

McAvoy: 'See Trance, but don't watch trailer'

With director Danny Boyle's twist-filled thriller Trance opening in Irish cinemas tomorrow, Wednesday March 27, star James McAvoy has told RTÉ TEN that viewers should go to the movie without having watched the trailer in order to maximise the surprise.

During the course of RTÉ TEN's interview with McAvoy, the actor discussed the modern malaise of viewers wanting to know everything about a film before they arrive at the cinema, and that Trance is a great reminder that the best movie experiences are often when you take your seat knowing very little.

McAvoy said: "I was one of the lucky people that saw Black Swan thinking that it was just a movie about ballet dancing. And what an amazing surprise and treat to go, 'Oh right, so it's about ballet dancing; oh right, it's also about a messed-up ballet dancer; oh right, it's about a mental case ballet dancer; oh my God it's about an absolute nut job!'

You can watch RTÉ TEN's interview with McAvoy by clicking the link on your left (warning: contains clips from movie!).

"And so, movies like that do need to be protected, because you will have such a good time in the theatre if you don't do anything else but look at this [Trance] poster and go, 'Danny Boyle. This poster. That's enough'. Because, y'know, Danny Boyle doesn't get it wrong. He doesn't disappoint; he doesn't make bad movies and he doesn't make movies that are anything less than... individual, singular, bold, brave, challenging that leave you going, 'Woah, woah, woah!'

"So that's enough. Don't even look at the trailer! I shouldn't say that; I'll get into trouble! Don't do any of that stuff: just go and see the film because Danny will deliver."

Four more go on Voice of Ireland

Written By Unknown on Senin, 25 Maret 2013 | 23.37

It was another night of tough choices for the coaches on The Voice of Ireland on RTÉ One on Sunday as four more contestants were eliminated from the show.

Jennifer Moore, Karl Sheridan, Stephen Hudson and Terri O'Reilly did not make it through to the next round.

Sunday night's show again saw three singers from each team perform. Coaches Bressie, Sharon Corr, Kian Egan and Jamelia then awarded marks out of 10 and viewers' votes were added to these marks.

The artist from each team with the highest score automatically went through to the next stage, but the two remaining acts had to face their coaches - who then decided who they wanted to save.

On Team Jamelia, Keith Hanley topped the poll and went straight through, with Jamelia choosing to save Wayne Beatty and send Jennifer Moore home.

Kelly Mongan had the highest score on Team Kian, with coach Egan choosing to save Ray Scully over Karl Sheridan.

Tammy Browne had the highest score on Team Sharon, and coach Corr chose to save John Gaughan over Stephen Hudson.

On Team Bressie, Sinéad O'Brien had the highest score, and coach Bressie put Andrew Mann through to the next stage, with Terri O'Reilly going home.

JJ Abrams talks about new Star Wars film

Director JJ Abrams says he is just getting started on the new Star Wars episode 7 film and as yet there are still more questions than answers.

Speaking to Empire magazine, JJ discussed the similarities filming the new instalment of the beloved space opera has with his other project, Star Trek Into Darkness.

"Though I came at both [films] from very different places, where they both meet is a place of, 'Ooh, that's really exciting'." he said.

"And even though I was never a Star Trek fan, I felt like there was a version of it that would make me excited, that I would think, 'That's cool, that feels right, I actually would want to see that'.

"It's a similar feeling that I have with Star Wars. I feel like I can identify a hunger for what I would want to see again and that is an incredibly exciting place to begin a project.

"The movies, the worlds could not be more different, but that feeling that there's something amazing here is the thing that they share."

He added that one veteran director was very supportive in his valiant decision to take on two mammoth sci-fi flicks at the same time.

"I will say that Steven [Spielberg] was very encouraging of Star Wars. It's funny because I talked to him about it and it turned out he knew all about what was going on."

Speaking to The Sun, Perkins explained that she can personally relate to the storyline: "I've always lived in London, and there have been times when it felt like you were waking up every day to the news that another young person had been stabbed.

"I have known youngsters who have lost their lives. I don't want to get too personal about it, but it is something that I'm passionate about. It's just senseless.

"I think it's really important for EastEnders to raise the issue of gangs."

Perkins, who recently had her contract extended by six months, added that she really feels at home on set. "I feel really settled in. I've really bonded with Khali Best, who plays Ava's son Dexter. We have such a laugh - I call him son and he calls me mum!

"It's also been great to work with Patsy Palmer [Bianca] on this storyline. Patsy is nothing like Bianca at all, she's really sweet and really funny."

The 29-year-old actress, who recently filmed her exit scenes, was involved in a domestic abuse storyline that saw her character abusing her ex-fiancé Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall).

Speaking to The Mirror newspaper, Gumede revealed that fans have had nightmares over her character, saying: "I've officially become the stuff of nightmares.

"A lot of people have told me they've had dreams where Kirsty was threatening them in some terrible way.

Natalie also stated that she agrees with viewers who believe that her character should be punished for her treatment of Tyrone over the past year.

Holly Willoughby "a slob" off set

The Voice UK and This Morning presenter, Holly Willoughby, has admitted she is "a slob" when not working.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, the 32-year-old mum-of-two, explained that people often think she is unwell when they see her outside of work.

Willoughby said: "I am such a slob at the weekend. It's hair back, no make-up. I just can't be bothered. There's no time.

"But people are used to seeing you in make-up so when you go bare-faced, you see people looking at you a little bit concerned, like, 'Is everything all right?'

"'Yes, it's fine. I'm just not wearing mascara. Chill out!' But I think that's quite funny, seeing people with their slightly confused, concerned faces."

Holly further revealed that her children, three-year-old Harry and 11-month-old Belle, are not bothered by her work: "They do know I'm on TV occasionally but for them that's not very weird because they see themselves on my phone and on the computer all the time in photos and videos.

"It's just normal. They're not really fussed or freaked out by seeing people on screen.

"I don't know when it will twig for them. But to be honest, unless I start hanging out with Peppa Pig, I don't think they'll be that impressed.

"My family time is very separate from work. Things change when you have children."

The Voice UK returns to BBC One on March 30 at 7pm.

Abrams discusses cancelled Superman project

Director and actor, JJ Abrams, has opened up about his cancelled DC Comics project Superman: Flyby.

The 46-year-old filmmaker explained that his story would have centred on Superman trying to control his powers as a young boy, and the Kents' attempts to teach him about limits.

Speaking to Empire, Abrams said: "The thing that I tried to emphasise in the story was that if the Kents found this boy, Kal-El, who had the power that he did, he would have most likely killed them both in short order.

"And the idea that these parents would see - if they were lucky to survive long enough - that they had to immediately begin teaching this kid to limit himself and to not be so fast, not be so strong, not be so powerful.

"The result of that, psychologically, would be fear of oneself, self-doubt and being ashamed of what you were capable of. Extrapolating that to adulthood became a fascinating psychological profile of someone who was not pretending to be Clark Kent, but who was Clark Kent. Who had become that kind of a character who is not able or willing to accept who he was and what his destiny was.

"The idea in the movie was that he became Superman because he realised he had to finally own his strength and what he'd always been."

He added: "I don't know if that's what Zack [Snyder] and Chris [Nolan] are doing, but it looks like that's part of the idea and I could not be more thrilled to see that movie. That to me was always the way to go."

Apatow addresses This is 40 reactions

Judd Apatow has spoken out about the mixed reactions to his latest film This Is 40.

The 45-year-old filmmaker has said that despite receiving varied reviews, he is still quite pleased with the audience reaction.

Speaking to The Huffington Post, Apatow said: "The critics I look to were very supportive of the movie. I think people's reactions to the movie are based a little bit on their world-view and life situation."

He added: "Certain people watch it and they relate to it and it makes them very happy to see other people struggling with the same things that they're struggling with. That's a compliment I get from the movie; people often say, 'It feels like you hid cameras in my house. You made us feel less crazy'.

"For some people, the movie might be scary. Because it is about people struggling to be happy and having a hard time. Some people go to the movies for an escape and some people go to the movies to feel more difficult emotions. What I'm trying to do is talk about things in as complex and deep a way as possible, while also trying to be hilariously funny."

He concluded: "That is something that people don't try that often. Some people really dig it, and some people don't."

RTÉ TEN Review - The Croods

The Croods hits all the right notes for a kids' movie, and this is a film that will no doubt leave rug rats laughing and smiling at the latest DreamWorks Animation offering.

This is the story of cave family the Croods, who are forced from their home when it is destroyed by major movement of the tectonic plates.

The Croods must then flee across their continent in search of stable ground where they can commence their new life in the coming Iron Age.

The problem is the father of the clan, Grug (Cage), is afraid of everything and believes that survival depends on never taking any chances and remaining in caves at every opportunity. Needless to say, this doesn't get the Croods very far as they set out across exotic lands - inhabited by strange and terrifying creatures - on their odyssey.

Enter their saviour in the form of Guy (Reynolds). This nomadic figure is a forward thinker who captures the heart of Grug's daughter Eep (Stone) and provides the family with outside-the-box ideas, which give them the impetus they need to continue their journey. Guy is their guiding force away from many of the scrapes they get themselves involved in.

The film is very much on the enjoyable side and visually engages from the start with its excellent animation, which seems to pay homage to the simple beauty of classic animation such as The Flintstones. In addition to the animation, the 3D is above the bar and has moments of superb vision and beauty.

But The Croods is not just an optical success. The story, while simple in its premise, engages the viewer; children will most certainly find that there is no sag as the tale is spun at breakneck speed, with developments coming at regular intervals to keep the cavalcade jolting along. Directors Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders have got the pacing almost bang on with this one.

The script weaves expertly between modern humour and more weighty issues such as martyrdom; the history of evolution; and the inspiration behind the creation of art.

The cast take that script and use it wisely, with the mercurial Nicolas Cage delivering a rounded performance as the cave father Grug.

His rivalry with Ryan Reynolds' character Guy is superb and two very charismatic actors get the chance to play off each other with excellent dialogue. It suits their respective styles and allows them to put some bravado into their performances.

Emma Stone as Grug's daughter is excellent, and like her male co-stars, is given a character of depth to play.

The supporting cast of Catherine Keener as the cave mother Ugga, Cloris Leachman as the cave grandmother and Clark Duke as the cave son are solid in their roles. However, they are a little underwritten and more time and care could have been spent layering those characters to improve some of the scenes.

The film is neither groundbreaking in terms of story or animation, but that should not take away from its solidity as a piece of work.

There is not one element of The Croods that is a major letdown. As a result, the sum of its parts adds up to an engaging movie that draws the viewer in.

Kids' movies that centre on journeys of discovery are many - with Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) springing back into my mind as perhaps one of the inspirations for The Croods - and this latest offering is one that will sit proudly in the canon.

RTÉ Ten Review: Identity Thief

Middling comedy which is saved by a stellar performance from Melissa McCarthy.

Family man Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) is just about making ends meet. His loving wife is expecting their third baby, and while he has a job, they don't know how they are going to afford to feed another addition to their family, let alone fit them in their two bedroom apartment. So when his boss snubs his request for a bonus and skips over him for a promotion, Sandy is only too happy to join his co-workers in a new business venture which promises a top-ranking position and a salary to match.

However, just as things start looking up for Sandy, his credit cards start getting declined and he gets pulled over by the cops. And to top it all off, there is a warrant out for his arrest. Turns out there is a woman in Florida (Melissa McCarthy) who just happens to have the exact same name and social security number as Sandy. Yes, you've guessed it, she's stolen his identity and the Florida-based Sandy isn't shy about running up bar tabs and getting into brawls.

With a mug shot of fake Sandy on police files, you would think that real Sandy would be in the clear. But in need of another 100 minutes of a plot, there's appears to be jurisdiction complications that send the real Sandy on a road trip down south to apprehend the fake Sandy.

Bateman and McCarthy are the real saving grace of this movie as the formulaic and unimaginative script leaves a lot to be desired. Bateman's understated wit gives McCarthy the platform to be outrageous and physically hilarious.

However what the script lacks in material McCarthy makes up for with her committed performance during which she utilises her vast comedic talent. McCarthy conjures up just the right amount of charm and naughtiness to ensure you laugh at least a couple of times - and I'm guessing these could be at her improv moments.

There are a plethora of well known faces popping up throughout the films including McCarthy's husband Ben Falcone - watch out for him in the motel scenes. Robert Patrick plays an angry bounty hunter while Braking Bad's Jonathan Banks plays a gang leader and Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet is somewhat of a love interest. And rapper T.I. makes for a very bad gangster.

The funniest moments of Identity Thief are definitely between Bateman and McCarthy, their comedic chemistry and timing is spot on. Is it enough to spend money on a ticket? I'd say wait for the DVD or even better, the Sunday Night Movie.

2/5

Saoirse Ronan shines at The Host LA premiere

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan was the star of the show in Hollywood last night at a special party to celebrate the release of her new film The Host.

The film is an adaptation of Twilight writer Stephanie Meyer's latest book and the event saw Ronan joined by co-stars Diane Kruger, Max Irons and Jake Abel.

The Hollywood Reporter says the stars walked the blue carpet alongside director Andrew Niccol before heading into the event at ArcLight Cinemas on Sunset Boulevard.

The Director and stars gave a brief introduction to the story with Niccols saying "It's more than just romantic love, which is what Stephenie has done before. It's about a greater love."

The film tells the story of people living on Earth after it has been invaded by aliens called 'souls' who use humans as hosts.

Niccol said he always favoured 18-year-old Ronan for the role of Melanie, who though invaded by a soul refuses to die, even though she was much younger than the character in the novel.

He said "We did not have a plan B. If Saoirse Ronan couldn't do it, I don't know who could do it. She's one of the most truthful actress of any age."

Ronan commented "I knew it would be a real challenge to really have to build two characters from the ground up and find a way to differentiate the two, yet still have them bounce off one another and kind of have them work in harmony with each other."

The film is due to open in Irish cinemas on March 29th.

The Rock addresses Star Wars rumours

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson caused a stir on social networking sites over the weekend when reports circulated indicating that the wrestler-turned-actor wanted a part in the next Star Wars movie.

Speaking exclusively to RTÉ TEN at the press launch for his new action adventure G.I Joe Retaliation, Dwayne set the record straight.

He said: "It's just funny how things morph into this. Somebody asked me if I was interested in that and I was like 'yeah of course'. Now I'm sitting here and we're talking to Ireland about me being in Star Wars. That would be cool.

"I grew up watching Star Wars and what I said was 'so you can imagine how cool it was for me to get the call about G.I Joe'. It would essentially be like if George Lucas called me or J.J. Abrams called me and said 'hey I want you to be in Star Wars'. It just has that deep rooted connection."

He joked: "So how are we going to do it? You're going to call Abrams and you're going to tell him The Rock should be in Star Wars."

RTÉ not commenting on Sheehan reports

Reports today suggest that Robert Sheehan's character Darren is set to make a return in the fourth series of Dublin crime drama Love/Hate when it airs on RTÉ later this year.

In the concluding episode of the last series, Darren was seen by nearly a million viewers being gunned down in broad daylight on a Dublin side street by Lizzie (Caoilfhionn Dunne), in revenge for her murdered brother.

However, a report in today's Herald newspaper claims that Sheehan will make a return as Darren in the new season of the hugely-popular drama after the actor was photographed filming scenes in Clontarf, north Dublin.

A spokesperson for RTÉ said, "We are not commenting on the photos of Robbie Sheehan. We don't want to ruin any storylines for loyal Love/Hate fans."

There was an outcry among fans of the show when Darren was left lying in a pool of blood at the end of the final episode of series three last December but it was never made clear if the pretty boy in Nidge's gang was dead or not.
