Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor has quit the popular soap.

Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor has quit the popular soap.

The 32-year-old actor, who has been playing Dr Matt Carter since 2010, finished his final scenes on the show earlier this year.

Speaking to The Sunday Mercury, he said: "There were quite long periods when I didn't appear at all, so I realised it was time to leave."

He continued: "They didn't try to make me stay - they admitted they didn't have any solid plans for the doctor and it would be more of the same.

"I thought, 'Fair enough, you've been great but it's time to go'. They just weren't progressing my character as much as I would like. As an actor you want some kind of consistency and to be busy."

Mellor explained that his exit is unlikely to feature as a storyline on the soap, adding: "It's a shame Matt doesn't get an exit storyline - they just stopped using him, unfortunately. But they're not killing him off, so you never know, he could return one day."

Mellor is currently busy working on a production of the play A Murder Has Been Arranged.

The League of Gentlemen star Reece Shearsmith has opened up about his role in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary biopic.

The 43-year-old is set to play actor Patrick Troughton (the second Doctor) in An Adventure in Space and Time, penned by League of Gentlemen co-star and co-creator Mark Gatiss.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Shearsmith said: "I was honoured to be part of it. Mark's... had that idea for a long time and he's finally got to do it this year. It's the perfect time for it to happen, with it being the 50th anniversary in November.

"I think he just always had this idea that I would [play Troughton]. It's very small - I'm literally only in a very small little bit, but it was lovely to be part of it."

Shearsmith added that he would love to appear on Doctor Who itself, but wouldn't consider himself as a suitable candidate to replace departing lead Matt Smith.

"Oh God, no! I've literally not even thought about it. I've had a few people tweeting me that, saying, 'You should be the Doctor'... I'm like, 'What?'

"It could be literally anyone. I can't imagine who we're gonna get. But it would be good to go older, I think, because they've done two younger ones."

An Adventure in Space and Time will air on BBC Two later this year.

Sci-fi author Richard Matheson dies, aged 87

Sci-fi writer Richard Matheson, author of I Am Legend and Steven Spielberg's debut movie Duel, has died aged 87

Sci-fi writer Richard Matheson, author of I Am Legend and Steven Spielberg's debut movie Duel, has died aged 87.

He was probably best known for writing the seminal 1954 novel I Am Legend which was made into a big-budget blockbuster starring Will Smith. He also wrote What Dreams May Come, The Shrinking Man, Hell House and A Stir of Echoes.

He also penned many other scripts for film and TV including the classic 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone, Nightmare at 20,000 Feet in which a young William Shatner is terrified by the presence of a strange creature he spots mid-flight on the wing of a commercial airliner.

Matheson wrote the script for the movie version of his short story Duel, which was directed by a young Steven Spielberg. The film stars Dennis Weaver as a motorist who is terrorised by a mysterious and satanic-looking truck as he makes his way through the desert in Arizona.

Gaming Review: The Last of Us

A superb survival horror that's high on narrative and character development, writes John Walshe.

A superb survival horror that's high on narrative and character development, writes John Walshe.

The hype surrounding The Last Of Us is enough to make you believe that it's The Road, Citizen Kane and Ulysses all rolled into one big zombie killing franchise. It's not.

What it is, however, is a hugely enjoyable combination of survival horror, shooter and action adventure which proves that good old-fashioned concepts like plot and character development are just as applicable to video games as to any other medium. Naughty Dog, the development team behind the Uncharted series and the Jak & Daxter games, have grown up and come of age with this post-apocalyptic chiller.

A mysterious plague has wiped out most of the world as we know it, turning those it infects into ultra-violent zombie-like killing machines, while the survivors fight it out for food and resources, widespread pandemonium only barely held in check by a heavily armed military presence. Into this maelstrom comes Joel, a hard-nosed survivor with a heart-breaking back story, and Tess, his tough-as-nails gun-toting girlfriend with a heart of gold.

When they inadvertently get mixed up with political revolutionaries, the Fireflies, our intrepid duo have to earn their weapons stash back by delivering a package for the anarchists. What they don't realise, however, is that their delivery is a foul-mouthed teenager called Ellie, who just might hold the secret to developing a vaccination for the infection that has decimated humanity.

Wait, you're thinking, I've heard all this before in games like Resident Evil, Resistance and a host of other survival horrors. And you'd be right. What sets The Last Of Us apart, however, is the emphasis on the lead characters, who are far more than the caricatures we're used to in video games. Normally, when characters die in games, there's barely a virtual tear shed, and it's only used as a tool to progress the action. Here, however, the player is actually allowed and encouraged to develop empathy with these flawed heroes, as they undertake an impossible journey across a ravaged America.

This all sounds very worthy, but it would count for little were the action not up to scratch. Thankfully, it is. There are plenty of bad guys to kill, both human and infected, with some very interesting variations on the latter. Our favourite are the 'Clickers', beings so mutated that they have lost their ability to see, instead relying on sonar-like clicks to detect movement. Trust me, these guys are better avoided than taken on, with stealthy skirting very much the order of the day.

The graphics throughout are remarkable, particularly the hugely expressive character models, and the sounds and voice acting are top notch. What really lifts The Last Of Us to the top of the class, however, is the way you get sucked into the story and its believable cast of characters. Like the recently released BioShock Infinite, it resets the standard for stories you can really immerse yourself in. A fantastic game.

RTÉ TEN has teamed up with Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures to give you a chance to win tickets to the European Premiere of one of the most anticipated films of the Summer, Pacific Rim from director Guillermo Del Toro, on July 4 at an epic event in London's BFI IMAX.

"From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes the sci-fi action adventure, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' Pacific Rim.

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.

"But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenceless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse."

Robbie Williams has responded to Liam Gallagher's expletive filled rant against the popstar.

Robbie Williams has responded to Liam Gallagher's expletive filled rant against the popstar.

Liam Gallagher was not impressed that Robbie Williams played four nights at his beloved Man City's football stadium earlier this week.

In fact he was so annoyed at the Candy singer that he called him a "f***ing fat f***ing idiot" in jealous rant to The Sun.

Never one to keep quiet amidst controversy, Robbie has responded to Liam's comments saying: "[Liam's] interviews are better than the records at the minute. I really enjoy the interviews. Liam is like an episode of Star Stories."

He also had a pop at some of the songs on new Beady Eye album BE, saying: "The production is really good. There are a couple of tunes that would have been f***ing amazing if they had a chorus.
"Flick Of The Finger, nearly a great tune. Start Anew, if that had a chorus, but there is no chorus."

He added: "When you listen to them [songs on the album] you think, 'Please put a chorus in — it will be brilliant.' They are not going to have a character brave enough to tell Liam that."

Watch! U2 sing Aslan's This Is at special concert

A host of Irish stars took to the stage at Dublin's Olympia Theatre last night to show their support for Aslan frontman, Christy Dignam, who is currently recuperating after treatment for cancer.

Last night (June 21) Ireland's top musicians came together in honour of Aslan's lead singer Christy Dignam.

Stars like Bressie, Danny O'Reilly, Paul Brady, Mary Black, Paul Walsh and Jedward to name but a few took the stage, with all proceeds from the event helping to pay for future treatment.

The theatre was packed to the rafters with over 1,650 revelers out to enjoy Aslan's music, sung by some of the top artists in this country.

Top of the bill was U2, who unfortunately weren't at the Olympia, but did stream their performance live from New York, where they are putting the finishing touches to their next album.

Speaking about U2's performance of Aslan's hit, This Is, guitarist Billy McGuinness said: "U2 don't really know us, but they're doing this because they want to. We both started around the same time – them in the late 70s and us in the early 80s. The difference is that U2 went through the roof and Aslan went into the gutter!"

Former Westlife star Mark Feehily was also among the star-studded turnout and, as you can see in the video below, the crowd went wild for his version of Where's the Sun, which was also his first live performance since the band split last year.

An overwhelmed Christy Dignam told the crowd: "It's been an amazing night. I can't believe I shared my songs with so many legendary Irish artists tonight. It has been a truly amazing experience and I would like to thank everyone who took part."

Helen Mirren hits out at film industry

The Queen actress Helen Mirren has criticised the movie industry for forgetting "huge audiences" of people.

The Queen actress Helen Mirren has criticised the movie industry for forgetting "huge audiences" of people.

The 67-year-old Academy Award winner explained that older cinemagoers are a discerning audience who also have money to spend on movies.

Speaking to Reader's Digest, Mirren said: "It's the funny thing about the film industry. They're constantly forgetting about certain huge audiences.

"They completely forgot about teenage girls for a while; then Titanic came out and made something like £3 billion - basically from teenage girls."

She added: "Before that, I remember they forgot about [young] kids. In this case, they forgot about the baby-boomer generation, which is an awful lot of people who are now in their 50s and 60s, and grew up on the cinema.

"They've got money in their pockets, they're free of having to go home to look after the children, and they want to go to the movies."

The Red 2 star further added: "They're a pretty discerning audience. They're not like the male 18- to 25-year-olds who'll say, 'Hey, it's got guns in it', or a car chase.

"The older version of that audience want wit, character development and some kind of vague sense of reality, even if the film's fantastical."

The full interview appears in the July issue of Reader's Digest, in shops on June 25.

Sopranos star James Gandolfini dies aged 51

The actor, James Gandolfini, best known for his role as mafia boss Tony in HBO's hit drama series, The Sopranos, has died at the age of 51 in Italy.

The actor, James Gandolfini, best known for his role as mafia boss Tony in HBO's hit drama series, The Sopranos, has died at the age of 51 in Italy.

He died yesterday of an apparent heart attack in Rome. The actor was on holidays and was due to attend an event at the 59th Taormina Film Festival in Sicily on Saturday night with actress Marisa Tomei.

Gandolfini was best known for playing the New Jersey mafia boss, Tony Soprano, in six seasons of The Sopranos which ran from 1999 until 2007.

He won three Emmys for the role in the series which was a huge international hit for HBO.

His most recent film roles include Zero Dark Thirty and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

The actor had recently returned to HBO where he was working on a seven-part series called Criminal Justice. In the series Gandolfini was set to play a down at heel lawyer who hangs about police stations looking for clients.

HBO said in a statement "We're all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family.

"He was special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility."

The Sopranos creator David Chase called Gandolfini a "genius" saying "He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes. I remember telling him many times, 'You don't get it. You're like Mozart.' There would be silence at the other end of the phone. He wasn't easy sometimes. But he was my partner, he was my brother in ways I can't explain and never will be able to explain."

Gandolfini was born into 1961 in New Jersey into and Italian-American family with Italian being spoken in his home. After graduating from the local High School he went on to earn a degree in communications studies and worked as a bar tender and club manager before embarking on a career in acting after being introduced to it in New York by a friend.

He also won praise for his stage work earning a Tony Award Nomination for his role in God of Carnage opposite Jeff Daniels and Hope Davies.

The actor is survived by his wife of four years, Deborah Lin, their daughter Liliana who was born in October, his teenage son, Michael, from a previous marriage and his two sisters, Leta Gandolfini and Johanna Antonacci.

The Executive Producer and creator of Homeland has hinted that viewers may see less of lead character, Nicholas Brody, in the upcoming third series of the hugely successful show.

Brody, played by Damian Lewis, was forced to go on the run at the end of the second season of the Showtime drama and the next season will see him branded "the world's most wanted terrorist."

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Alex Gansa said that Brody will feature "perhaps not as much" as in the previous seasons.

Gansa said "He is the most wanted man on the planet. By definition, he's going to be hiding somewhere. And if he's hiding, that limits what he can do."

Speaking about the show's decision not to kill off Brody he said "not killing him off was the right move."

He added "There was still more story to tell between Carrie [Claire Danes] and Brody."

Homeland will be back on TV in the US on September 29th and will be shown on RTÉ Two in Ireland.

World War Z star Brad Pitt has admitted that he would throw a massive party if he discovered that the world was coming to an end.

The 49-year-old actor, who is engaged to Angelina Jolie, with whom he has six children, insisted that he wouldn't try and be a hero, if he found out that civilisation was under threat from zombies.

Speaking at the New York premiere for his recent apocalyptic movie, Pitt said: ''Would I do something heroic? Who knows? I think if I knew this was absolutely it, the final end of Earth, I'd probably just have a big party!''

Pitt further told the New York Post newspaper that he was a huge part of the movie's creative process, adding: ''I've worked on this film, this one project, forever. I've been involved in every step for at least five or six years.

''It's been so long, I can't remember. I'm one of the producing partners. I've been through every bit of the entire production. I'm in the editing room.''

He added: ''And despite all my heroic fight scenes, I still managed to eat everything and get some sleep. I admit, however, I did twist a couple of ankles.''

Transformers director Michael Bay has commended the firefighters who saved the day when a fire broke out on the set of the latest Transformers movie.

The 48-year-old The Purge moviemaker has opened up about the incident on his blog, writing: "Shooting of Transformers 4 is going great with Wahlberg and the new cast. We are having a great time in Texas... Yes there was a small smouldering fire at a house and no, no one was injured during the fire. And no, no one 'just narrowly escaped' as the news dramatically states. A crew member though twisted his ankle after falling in a gopher hole on the ranch.

"The fire was put out in a brief 15 minutes by a great fire crew on set. It was an attic fire and cause is unknown. No we were not shooting in the attic, we were shooting outside on the ranch."

Transformers 4 is set for release next summer 2014.

Warning: spoiler alert!

Cindy Junior (played by Mimi Keene, recently seen in BBC One's Our Girl) is the daughter of the late Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), who died from an embolism in prison following her birth.

She is the half-sister of Steven, Peter and Lucy Beale.

Cindy Junior is sent to Albert Square for the summer holidays and makes it clear that she will not go home to Devon once the school term restarts.

Keene will make her debut as Cindy Junior in August; the character was last seen in 2007, when she was played by Eva Sayer.

The soap's executive producer, Lorraine Newman, said: "Mimi is an exciting addition to the show and a great actress as her previous work has shown.

"Cindy's a minx, creating a great energy within the newly reformed Beale clan. With Peter, Lucy, Bobby and Cindy to contend with, it'll be a lively household. Ian and Denise will certainly have their work cut out."

With his new comedy series Family Tree set to begin on BBC Two in the coming weeks, Chris O'Dowd has been speaking about his discoveries about his own family – and how he might be related to a pop legend.

In an interview with the BBC, O'Dowd was asked whether he had researched his own family tree.

"A little bit, especially as my parents get older," he said. "I found out that my great grandfather was a bigamist and a travelling salesman. We found out after his death - I never met him, it was before my time - but he had a second family in Birmingham and O'Dowd is quite an uncommon name."

O'Dowd added: "This is pure conjecture, but one strand of O'Dowds that came from Birmingham also spawned George O'Dowd, who people probably know better as Boy George. So we could be cousins."

Co-written and co-created by Christopher Guest (Best in Show, This Is Spinal Tap) and Jim Piddock (Too Much Sun), Family Tree follows the journey of Tom Chadwick (O'Dowd).

After losing his job and splitting up with his girlfriend, Tom starts looking at his family history, inheriting a mysterious box from a great aunt which reveals hidden family characters.

'Nothing off limits in Bono interview' - Gay Byrne

Gay Byrne says there were no limits during his recent interview with U2's Bono for next week's episode of The Meaning Of Life series

Gay Byrne says there were no limits during his interview with U2's Bono for next week's episode of The Meaning Of Life series.

In the interview, which will be broadcast on RTÉ One on Tuesday June 25th at 9.35pm, Bono talks about "the life that has shaped his beliefs and values and the values and beliefs that have shaped his life."

Two days before his 53rd birthday last May, the singer and activist took time out from the studio, where U2 are recording their next album which is due for release in autumn.

According to series producers, he wanted a clear space between his interview with Byrne and promotional interviews for the new album because, having watched previous episodes of The Meaning Of Life, he understood that this was not a conversation about the album or the band.

Speaking about the interview, Byrne said: "Bono is one of the people who I have always wanted to feature on the Meaning Of Life. For one of Ireland's most influential figures he has managed to maintain a remarkable degree of privacy. We had spoken many times about doing the interview as I knew this would be very different to any we had done in the past.

"Many people will be surprised that Bono has a deeply-rooted belief which permeates his everyday life and motivates all his campaigning work. Nothing was off limits and he opened up about his innermost beliefs, his religion, his family and of course the influence of his beliefs on U2."

Bono has come in for somewhat of a kicking recently with the publication of a new book which is highly critical of his political and humanitarian activism.

The Frontman: Bono (In The Name of Power) by lecturer and journalist Harry Brown is a polemical overview of the U2 man's career as a campaigner which accuses of him of worsening the injustices he campaigns against.
