Eurosong 2014 mentors are revealed

RTÉ has decided to retain the same mentoring procedure for next year's Eurovision Song Contest and has appointed five new Eurosong 2014 mentors in the search for a winning Irish song.

The Eurosong 2014 mentors are: Aslan guitarist Billy McGuinness, singer and songwriter Hazel Kaneswaran, RTÉ 2fm presenter and Kerbdog frontman Cormac Battle, band manager Valerie Roe and tour manager Mark Murphy.

RTÉ says that in the coming months the mentors "will source songs and singers who, in their view, should compete to best represent the country" at the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen next May.

Mentors must submit details of their act and song to RTÉ by January 3, 2014 and recorded versions of the song should be submitted to RTÉ by February 3 2014.

Details of the five acts and songs will be announced in the New Year and the mentors' five chosen songs will be performed for the first time by their acts on The Late Late Show Eurosong 2014 on February 28, 2014.

The winner will once again be decided by a combination of public vote and regional jury.

The Semi-Finals of the 59th Eurovision Song Contest are set to take place on Tuesday May 6 and Thursday May 8 in Copenhagen. The Final is scheduled for Saturday, May 10.

Quotes from and contact details for the mentors:

Billy McGuinness: "Normally I wouldn't have had the time to be involved as a mentor for Eurovision, but with Aslan on a break I feel I can commit myself to finding a great song and singer to represent Ireland. If there are songwriters out there who want to send me songs please email: billymcguinness@gmail.com."

Hazel Kaneswaran: "I am really looking forward to mentoring my act for the Eurosong. I've always loved the Eurovision Song contest ever since I fell in love with Johnny Logan as a young child! Every year the Eurovision winner is different, so it's hard to know what the public want but I'll give it my best shot. Artists and songwriters can contact me by clicking on: www.hazelkaneswaran.ie.

Cormac Battle: "I thought they were joking when they asked me to be a mentor for Eurosong 2014 but on reflection I have been heavily involved in the music making process for a long time albeit in a different sphere - so why not? A brilliant song is a brilliant song no matter what. And this is one of the most exciting and challenging projects I have ever taken on. I am in it to win it. If anyone would like to contact me please email: eurobattle@rte.ie."

Valerie Roe: "Music is my first love and my vision for Ireland this year is to go back to our roots with a powerful song and an exceptional singer with strong production and the inimitable artistic style that Ireland is famed for worldwide. Artists and songwriters can contact me via my email: valerie@valerieroe.com."

Mark Murphy: "I got involved to find a great song and singer to represent Ireland. I feel there is so much musical talent out there that it's the right time to get involved and find the perfect song for Eurovision. I would love to hear from songwriters and artists and they can contact me via email: markmurphyeurosong@gmail.com."

RTÉ Eurovision Co-ordinator Michael Kealy said: "RTÉ wanted to again offer the Irish public a say in deciding who Ireland's Eurovision entry should be. We felt the last year's mentoring process was successful in delivering five strong acts which could represent Ireland.

"The five mentors this year represent a wide range of experience and talent and the songs and acts they choose will deliver a very thrilling and energetic Eurosong final in February."

Kanye is reportedly turning into a bridezilla

Kanye West is said to be turning into a bridezilla and has big plans for his wedding day with Kim Kardashian.

The singer has vowed that their wedding will be the biggest show on earth and a source told RadarOnline.com that he is taking wedding planning very seriously.

The source said: "Kanye has a very specific vision of what the ceremony should look like and this won't be an understated or intimate event. Kanye wants the wedding to take place in Paris and has even indicated that he is willing to fly over Kim's family on his dime.

''Kim is just letting Kanye take charge, as she has done with all other parts of her life. She is being consulted on everything, but it's very different from how Kim handled her wedding to Kris [Humphries, in 2011].

''That was Kim's wedding. This is going to be Kanye's wedding.''

Stuart Townsend talks Betrayal

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 29 Oktober 2013 | 23.37

John Byrne talks to Dubliner Stuart Townsend about his starring role in new US drama Betrayal, which begins on Tuesday October 29 on RTÉ Two at 10:00pm.

While Irish actors have done extremely well in Hollywood in recent decades, it's very rare for someone from the Emerald Isle to land a leading role in a prime time American TV show. Dubliner Stuart Townsend has bucked that trend, and from Tuesday (October 29) you can see how he's getting on in a new drama called Betrayal as its European premiere takes place on RTÉ Two.

From ABC – the people whose previous shows include Desperate Housewives and, more recently, Revenge – this is a story based on the Dutch drama series Overspel, and stars Hannah Ware as Sara Hanley, a photographer, who begins an affair with Jack McAllister, a lawyer for a powerful family, played by Stuart Townsend.

The show's illicit lovers are both unhappily married to other people, but things begin to really get complicated when it transpires that a murder trial involves the cheating pair – and on separate sides of the case.

For Townsend (who looks remarkably fresh given that he'll be celebrating his 41st birthday in a couple of weeks), it's a huge opportunity to put himself centrestage in the Tinseltown shop window, a place where even a supporting role in a TV pilot that might not even be televised, is a major miracle.

On the blower from Chicago, where Betrayal is both filmed and set, he's in typically chirpy mood.

John Byrne: So, Stuart, how is the Windy City?

Stuart Townsend: It's very cold! It just got cold about five days ago. But up until then it had been beautiful. I was doing a running scene yesterday, down by the river, which is like a wind tunnel. And I'm in my little running gear. That was fun.

So tell us about your character in Betrayal, Jack McAllister?

He's a bit of a randy fella! Jack is part of this very powerful Chicago family. What we learn a little later in the pilot is that he was kind of brought into the family; he married into it, it's not his own family. He now works for them, he's married to the daughter, and all is going well. He's got two nice kids, he's got a nice house, got a nice life. He's rich.

But obviously that isn't enough for him?

He's got everything he could want – but he's a little dead inside. He spots this woman, and something happens, and feels alive for the first time. Initially, nothing happens. But they meet each other again and they get together. He takes this big leap – which is, of course, stupid – it has repercussions that you'll see later on in the show. But sometimes the heart just goes where it wants to go, and I think we can recognise that.

I see James Cromwell plays Jack's father-in-law. He was amazing in season two of American Horror Story. It must be fun working with him?

Yeah, he got an Emmy for American Horror Story. I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard about it. He's so amazing. He's 6' 7". He's a giant! He's an incredible actor. He's a very imposing man and yet he's such a nice man, such a gentleman. But he turns it on as Thatcher Karsten – he's such a badass! He really can be terrifying. It's great to work with him.

We're shooting episode number 10, and it's kind of amazing where the show has gone in terms of their relationship. I work for him in the beginning of the show and then, having this affair has the potential to put a lot of things in jeopardy, including the job and our relationship. And where the writers are taking it, I have to say, is really amazing.

Where would you pitch it? Is it a soap on stilts, like the classic Dallas?

Is it a soap? People call it a soap, and there are elements of that. But I call it a rocking solid drama. I think the first two episodes, you kind of have to just... in a way they're the set-up. They're not my favourite episodes, to be honest. They're solid but, really, the show gets going in number three. We've shot all these scripts and it's pretty exciting, I have to say. All the actors come on set and we're all talking about the next script. I think the audience should hang tight and see the first two episodes as just laying the groundwork. There'll be a major pay-off.

It's a family drama; it's got romance; it's got that whole thriller element with the murder; there's legal stuff. But, essentially, it's kind of relatable to everybody, because these are relationships that we all have: with our families, with ourselves.

The plot is pretty intricate. What they lay out in the pilot really gets explored and I have to say for me, as an actor, it's amazing. All these characters are multi-dimensional, and I don't know if you get that with a soap, normally. For me, it doesn't feel like we're doing a soap.

This is a great opportunity for you, isn't it?

I love working with good actors. Sometimes you can get on a show and the writers are doing it – there are so many variables. But in this show, you're working with professionals across the board. And they're very good. I'm really enjoying it.

Betrayal begins on Tuesday October 29 on RTÉ Two at 10.00pm

Jason Barry opens up on Love/Hate role

Actor Jason Barry, whose character Dano was the main talking point after Sunday night's episode of Love/Hate, speaks about his role on the show.

Warning: spoiler alert!

How did it feel when you read the script describing Dano's death?

Jason Barry: I knew last year [after season three] from talking with Stuart Carolan [Love/Hate creator] that Dano's days were numbered in season four. Firstly, I was happy that he was brought back but nervous about how he would exit. Dano and Nidge [Tom Vaughan-Lawlor] can't exist in the same world so I figured Stuart would kill him off rather than just have him drive off into the sunset. Stuart really has given Dano the exit he deserves. It's brutal and sad all rolled into one.

Dano believes in everything he stands for so to go out trying to stand up against the tree after being kneecapped is very important. You may not like the character but he is true to himself to the bitter end. He feels like a boxer who has never been knocked down and wants to keep that pride to the bitter end. It's an incredibly powerful scene and I am very grateful to Stuart that he let Dano go out that way.

How did you prepare for the scene?

Dano believes that he is about to finally get Nidge, but in a few quick beats you have to portray the high of thinking he is finally avenging his father to the realisation that he is being stabbed in the back. All that happens in a few seconds so you have to rely on instinct as an actor. After being shot and crawling along the ground and then standing by the tree is different: you just let the physicality of the scene take over which in turn leads into the emotional side towards the end. You just have to go with it and trust in it.

What will you miss most about Love/Hate?

I will miss working with the cast and crew. [They are] A truly great bunch of people and I hope they all go on to do great things in the future. As an actor, I will miss being part of a quality show. When you look at your CV it's split between good, bad and ok work so to be part of a good show is great and I will miss that. I will also miss filming in Dublin. Love/Hate has really excited me again about working back home so I hope the show will lead to more work in Ireland.

What was your favourite scene during your time on Love/Hate?

Favourite scene? It has to be firing away like a mad man on the AK47. Great fun!

Did you enjoy playing the character of Dano?

I did enjoy playing Dano. It's a role I have not played before and I enjoyed going to the dark side of my soul. He was such a complex character even though he didn't come across as the brightest tool in the box. I actually felt a bit sorry for him at the end. I mean, after all – all he wanted was to get the guys who killed his dad.

What's up next for you as an actor?

I'm just finished a film called F2014 about the history of FIFA with Sam Neill and Tim Roth. [I'm] Back to working on my script Marathon Men, which I hope to get made in the next year or two in Ireland.

Love/Hate continues on Sunday November 3 at 9.30pm on RTÉ One.

Have a look at some of Dano's moments from Love/Hate below.

Fassbender graces Elle front cover

Michael Fassbender graces the front cover of the December issue of British Elle magazine, the second time a solo male star has appeared on the cover.

The 12 Years A Slave star spoke to the magazine about his looks, revealing that he "never really thought" of himself as attractive.

Fassbender said: "I think of myself as, you know, alright. I used to have bad acne as a teenager, so all of this is a bonus now, the fact that I don't have pimples anymore.

"And my hair was also, you know, unfortunate. I had really long hair. I mean, I tied it back most of the time, but I had all these frizzy bits coming off the top and whenever I let the hair down, it went like this [indicates big, bushy frizz]."

The actor was shot by renowned English photographer David Bailey for the limited edition cover.

Fassbender follows in the footsteps of footballer David Beckham who became British Elle's first male solo cover star in July 2012.

Panettiere thought career was over after Heroes

Hayden Panettiere has admitted that she thought her career was over after Heroes was axed.

The actress starred in the NBC series from 2006-2010 and when the show was axed she thought nobody else would take a chance on her.

The Nashville star told PA: "It hit me like a tonne of bricks – there is a genuine possibility that no-one will ever take another chance on me.

"That was an important gap between Heroes and this show [Nashville], a huge transition to make gracefully. I don't know how gracefully I did it, but somehow I did."

Panettiere plays diva Juliette Barnes in Nashville and enjoys playing the role.

"Nashville was perfect timing with the perfect character. Juliette is so not the good girl that I played on Heroes, but she has to put on the facade as a good girl to get what she wants," she said.

"Juliette is tough, but when she cries, she means it. She's a very damaged young woman running from a dark past. How much more perfect could I ask for?"

The 24-year-old star added: "A lot of what I've drawn from is my own personal experience. I grew up in the entertainment industry, in the spotlight, and have had to deal with some of the same struggles. In this business, there are so many doors wide open to walk through and it looks like the normal thing to do.

"The difference is I've always had people around me to yank me back before I went too far."

Kidman has found her "great love" in Keith Urban

The Paperboy star Nicole Kidman has revealed that Keith Urban is her "great love" and although she was previously married to Tom Cruise, she thinks their split gave her time to mature.

The 46-year-old actress, who wed Urban in 2006, admitted that she wasn't ready to make such a huge commitment to Tom Cruise when she was in her early twenties.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Kidman said: "With no disrespect to what I had with Tom, I've met my great love now. And I really did not know if that was going to happen. I wanted it, but I didn't want it for a while, because I didn't want to jump from one relationship to another. I had a lot of time alone, which was really, really good, because I was a child, really, when I got married [to Cruise]. And I needed to grow up."

Kidman further explained that she thinks love can be "very intoxicating" as there is somebody else who understands exactly what you're going through in life and you can live in your own "bubble".

She added: "There is something about that sort of existence that, if you really focus on each other and you're in that bubble, it's very intoxicating, because it's just the two of you.

"And there is only one other person that's going through it. So it brings you very close, and it's deeply romantic."

Rocker Lou Reed has died, aged 71

Written By Unknown on Senin, 28 Oktober 2013 | 23.37

Legendary musician Lou Reed has died at the age of 71.

Reed, who is best know for his work as singer, songwriter and guitarist for The Velvet Underground, has passed away six months after having a liver transplant in May.

His literary agent, Andrew Wylie, confirmed that he died of a liver-related illness yesterday morning (October 27) in Southampton, New York.

Wylie said: "He was as great an artist as it's possible to be in my opinion".

Reed first rose to prominence with The Velvet Underground in the 1960s, the band he founded with John Cale.

They became one of the most influential in rock by fusing art and music in New York through their collaboration with artist Andy Warhol.

Warhol designed the banana image which the band featured it on its first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, in 1967.

Although The Velvet Underground only enjoyed limited commercial success in the 1960s, the band became hugely popular in the subsequent decades.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

Reed, whose solo hits include the classics Walk on the Wide Side, Perfect Day and Satellite of Love, released 20 solo studio albums from 1972 to 2007.

Reed is survived by his wife, performance artist Laurie Anderson, who he married in 2008.

Since the news of his death, tributes have poured in from from fans and stars across the entertainment world.

Deborah Meaden exits Strictly Come Dancing

Deborah Meaden has been voted out of Strictly Come Dancing.

The Dragons' Den star is the fourth celebrity contestant to leave the competition, following fashion designer Julien Macdonald's departure last week.

Casualty actor Patrick Robinson and his partner Anya Garnis were in the bottom two with Meaden and her partner Robin Windsor, after the viewers' votes and judges' scores were combined.

Both couples repeated their dances to fight to stay in the competition. Meaden and Windsor performed a Viennese waltz to James Brown's It's a Man's Man's World, while Robinson and Garnis performed a salsa to Little Mix's Wings.

Judges Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Darcey Bussell each chose to save Robinson, with head judge Len Goodman agreeing that he would have done the same.

Meaden said of taking part in the series:  "I can't tell you. Strictly gave me a gift but the big gift that Strictly gave me was this guy [Windsor]. To teach me to dance, to find something I never even knew I could do and to make it the best. He's wonderful. There's going to be tears. No, I'm a dragon, there'll be no tears."

Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One on Saturday November 2 at 6.30pm.

First fatality on last night's Love/Hate

Dano was left crawling in the mud while Sinead O'Connor's This Is A Rebel Song played out as he fought for his last few breaths.

It was a tense and violent episode, which saw Lizzie arrested for a road rage incident and Wayne kidnapped by Nidge and threatened with torture.

However, the rushed operation goes awry and everyone ends up getting arrested. Wayne denies to the police that he has been kidnapped – he's not a rat – and they are all released

Take a look at some shots from the episode below.

Jay Z has spoken about his Barneys relationship

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 27 Oktober 2013 | 23.37

Jay Z has defended his working relationship with Barneys following the store being accused of racial profiling.

The star, real name Shawn Carter, has been urged by fans to pull out of a contract to design a clothing line for the retailer following two customers accusing the store of racially profiling them.

Carter made a statement on his website about the incident and explained his reasoning for staying quiet about the issue thus far.

"I move and speak based on facts and not emotion. I haven't made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys.

"Why am I being demonised, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately? The negligent, erroneous reports and attacks on my character, intentions, and the spirit of this collaboration have forced me into a statement I didn't want to make without the full facts."

He added that another reason he is cautious to prematurely pull out of the project is because a large amount of the profits made from the collection will go to The Shawn Carter Foundation.

"This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning. My idea was born out of creativity and charity… not profit.

"Making a decision prematurely to pull out of this project wouldn't hurt Barneys or Shawn Carter, but all the people that stand a chance at higher education."

Geldof on her 'traumatic pregnancies'

Peaches Geldof opened up about her "traumatic pregnancies" on last night's Saturday Night Show on RTÉ One.

The TV presenter told host Brendan O'Connor: "I had two quite traumatic pregnancies. With my first pregnancy I had something called Hyperemesis gravidarum, which everyone knows about now because Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge had it as well. It's really serious, people can die from it. I lost two stone, I was being sick up to forty times a day, continuously. It's like morning sickness but throughout the whole of your pregnancy.

"And then with my second child, it was a lot easier but I had a sort of thyroid problem, which is quite good actually because you can eat whatever you want, you don't have to have medication and you don't just don't gain any weight, ever."

The star, who is married to musician Thomas Cohen, also opened up about how her two sons, 17-month-old Astala Dylan Willow and 7-month-old Phaedra Bloom Forever, have kept her grounded.

She explained: "I do think that a lot of my life was spent working, and between working I was drifting around, going to different countries, I lived in American a lot and I kept moving back to the UK, and I was sort of rootless. And then when I had my children I was really anchored into one place, and my husband as well was keeping me there.

"Through that I found a really big sense of serenity and peace and became the sort of earth mother which no one would ever have predicted. It's definitely the best thing I've ever done."

Beckham involved in a car crash outside LA home

David Beckham reportedly crashed into another car as he was leaving his home in Beverly Hills on Friday.

The star was apparently driving his black Range Rover with his 14-year-old son Brooklyn in the passenger seat when he collided with an oncoming vehicle at 2.30pm.  Nobody was harmed in the accident.

Onlookers said that Beckham reversed back into his driveway after the collision and waited for police to arrive to the scene.

The Range Rover is thought to be worth between $60,000 and $76,195 and Beckham bought it in 2010. The other car involved was a white Acura 4x4.

Previously unpublished Heaney poem appears

A previously unpublished Seamus Heaney poem, written shortly before his death, can be read in today's edition of the Irish Times and Guardian newspapers.

Heaney was invited by the poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, to contribute to a memorial anthology to mark the centenary of the start of the first world war. The challenge was to respond in verse to poetry, letters and diaries from the time.

Heaney selected as the basis for his verses, Edward Thomas's poem, As The Team's Head Brass. Thomas wrote that celebrated poem in 1916 shortly before he asked to be posted to the front. Thomas died at Arras a year later, in 1917.

In response Heaney wrote In a Field, completed in June, two months before his own death and now published for the first time.

Colm Meaney talks One Chance

John Byrne talks to Colm Meaney about his latest role, playing singer Paul Potts' father in the biopic One Chance.

The nights are drawing in, it's getting colder, the Budget's been announced and there are more price increases on the way to put even more pressure on people. If ever we needed cheering-up, now would be good.

In times of austerity such as now, feel-good movies are almost essential in order to brighten up our days a little. Perfect timing comes in the shape of One Chance, a highly entertaining biopic of Paul Potts, the Welsh singer who managed to make his dreams come true.

One Chance

Played by James Corden (of Gavin & Stacey fame), Potts is the Carphone Warehouse manager from Port Talbot in Wales whose reality TV victory on ITV show Britain's Got Talent turned him into a platinum-selling tenor. And this is his story.

The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me's director David Frankel is the man in charge of the clapperboard here, in a comedy-drama that brings movies such as Billy Elliot, The Full Monty and Rocky to mind.

Julie Walters plays Paul Potts' mother, while Dubliner Colm Meaney does the honours as Mr Potts.

John Byrne: It's one thing acting in a movie and quite another viewing the finished article. Are you happy with the way One Chance turned out?

Colm Meaney: I was just thrilled with it. You laugh, you cry – which is always good – you walk out with a smile on your face. It's ultimately a very uplifting film and anyone going to see it is in for a treat.

One Chance

Just what we need right now – a bit of cheering-up?

I know people are having tough times and economically we're still in the doldrums, a lot of it of our own making, but this story – I wasn't familiar with it, I'm not familiar with British television – I didn't know the Paul Potts story. I thought he was a Cambodian dictator! It's really an uplifting story. The guy went through an awful lot of adversity and there were times he came close to giving it all up and quitting. And that's why the payoff at the end of the film is so big, because the guy has been through so much.

It's pretty much an inspirational story - as is your career, given that you came from humble beginnings in Dublin to become a Star Trek institution and enjoy a long career in movies...

I never thought of it that way... If young fellas grow up in Dublin, and grow up thinking of having a career in whatever field and believe that they can do it, well that's great.

And what was it like working with Julie Walters?

I've loved her since Educating Rita. She's an amazing and wonderful actress – she's just unique. And I finally got a chance to work with her, and she's a doll – a great character.

Julie's role as the mother is encouraging of Paul Potts, while your character's a more practical kind of person...

It's a classic situation. A working-class kid from a working-class background, and he decides he wants to be an opera singer. I can actually relate to this because it's a bit like me telling me da in Finglas: 'I want to be an actor'. And he's like: 'A what?'

And I think people see the dad in the movie as the bad guy, in a way, but in fact it's a perfectly understandable reaction. You want to make sure that your kid is alright. You want to make sure that he has a job. And also, just from an emotional point of view, you don't want him going out there and setting himself up for ridicule.

You're trying to knock some sense into them. 'Look, man – do your singing in the shower or whatever, but get on with it and get a job, and look after yourself'.

A Belfast Story was out recently in cinemas and you're still involved in Hell on Wheels on TV. You're certainly kept busy.

It's busy, yeah. Hell on Wheels is a great show and I love doing it. It's a great character. We've done three seasons and there will be a decision towards the end of the year whether to pick it up or not. But the numbers have been very good in America this year.

One Chance is on general release from October 25.

One Chance

The Queen is Dead tops NME greatest albums poll

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 24 Oktober 2013 | 23.37

The Smiths' The Queen is Dead has topped a new NME poll of the greatest albums of all time, beating off competition from The Beatles and David Bowie.

The Smiths' third studio album was released in 1986 and is regrarded as the band's masterpiece with classics such as The Boy With The Thorn in His Side and Big Mouth Strikes Again.

The latest issue of the NME features a full rundown of The 500 greatest albums of all time as voted by the magazine and website's writers past and present, as well as previous NME top 50 albums of the year lists.

The magazine claims that The Queen is Dead is as relevant today as it was 27 years ago. "There's a perverse national pride to be gleaned from the knowledge that Britain was just as broken in 1986 as it is in 2013.

"No album is made in a vacuum, but The Queen Is Dead is one of the select few that seems to transcend its influences and synthesise them into something singular and new."

The Beatles' Revolver came second in the poll and Hunky Dory by David Bowie was third. Is This It by The Strokes came fourth and is the most recently released album in the top ten, while The Velvet Underground & Nico's eponymous album came fifth.

Born and raised in Manchester to Irish parents Peggy and Tommy, Liam and Noel's musical journey began long before they were born. Find out more tonight.

Oi Ginger! Reality Bites, 9.55pm, RTÉ Two

In this week's Reality Bites programme, stylist and fashion journalist Angela Scanlon, delves deep into one of Ireland's best known features – our red hair! As a natural red head, Angela reveals the highs and lows of growing up with this striking feature and reveals how only one per cent of the world's population have red hair.

Ireland has a much higher percentage of red hairs with over ten per cent and only the Scots have a higher proportion – so it really is something to be celebrated. So why isn't it? The presenter explores why there is so much prejudice against those with the 'ginger gene' and why on the one hand it is unacceptable to discriminate on someone's skin colour but all of those taboos go out the window when it comes to hair colour. Plus despite red heads having a reputation as hot tempered and passionate, research shows that red heads are least likely to be chatted up so Angela decides to put this to the test on a night out and brings us along to see how it all goes!

Twilight star developing young adult novel series

Twilight star Peter Facinelli is preparing to launch his first young adult novel, After The Red Rain.

The 39-year-old actor who portrayed vampire patriarch Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the Twilight films, has teamed up with authors Rob DeFranco and Barry Lyga to develop his first novel.

Speaking to EW, Facinelli said: "I love storytelling. Being an actor is a form of telling stories through characters. As a writer I get the opportunity to create the entire world that all the characters live in as opposed to focusing on one character or one part of the story. I enjoy being able to create and manipulate characters and events in order to tell a whole story.

"I have written two film scripts, but I have not tackled a novel before . . . (and) the task of writing a novel was overwhelming at first, and I am happy that I get to collaborate with Barry Lyga and Rob DeFranco. It makes the process less daunting when you get to bounce ideas off of others you respect, and Rob and I both feel very fortunate to work alongside Barry, who has experience in this form of storytelling."

Facinelli says he has a great fan base at home: "I do have my own Ya (young adult) test group at home. I've read some sample chapters to my 10-year-old and 16-year-old daughters (and) so far I'm getting thumbs up."

After The Red Rain is expected to be published in 2015.

Donovan talks The Beatles and Bob Dylan

Folk veteran Donovan says that he's proud to have helped The Beatles to write some of their most memorable songs and that he never dreamt he would still be talking about his time with the band all these years later.

"When I was in India with The Beatles, one of the deep areas John was getting in touch with was with his mother and I'm very connected with the song Julia," he told RTÉ Ten ahead of his gig in Dublin's Olympia this Saturday night (October 26th).

"John was diving deep and he said to me, 'You know how to write children's songs. I'm trying to write on about my mother . . . ' Where the song came from may have been his deep, deep heartache with his mother.

"I had been playing daily, for hours, a certain guitar style and chord structure. It was the claw hammer style and John learned it and as he was picking, tunes were coming out and his mother came out . . . he was trying to write a song about a childhood he never had.

"At the same time George was doing While My Guitar Gently Weeps. John wrote – Dear Prudence. So my favourites from the album were the ones where I was sat in a jungle in India with John and George. And Paul wrote Blackbird . . . they went back to their roots and I was the guy who helped them I'm so pleased to say."

The 68-year-old, who had hits with Catch the Wind and Mellow Yellow, has just released his new album, Shadows of Blue, and gave a talk on The Beatles' "White Album" in Trinity earlier this week.
