Pitt and Jolie won't get married any time soon

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 31 Mei 2014 | 23.38

Angelina Jolie has said that she and fiancé Brad Pitt are in no rush to get married and that they have nothing organised yet for their big day.

The Maleficent star has been engaged to her Mr and Mrs Smith co-star since April 2012 and told USA Today, "We don't have any plans to get married at the moment. Nothing is organised. Nothing is ready.

"I don't have a dress. It matters to us in a very private way. But we also understand that we're public people."

The 38-year-old actress added that she plans to focus on directing in the future as she has never loved acting as much as she loves writing and directing, "I became an actress because my mom wanted me to become an actress. It took me until my mid-30s to realize I actually didn't.

"I actually wanted to write and direct and be more involved in politics and humanitarian issues. I'll do a few more films and enjoy it and if I'm blessed to have a good career, but I've never loved it like I love other things."

Piven teases star-studded cameo cast for Entourage

Jeremy Piven has said that Entourage movie is 'loaded with cameos' and promises fans that the film will be really satisfying.

The 48-year-old actor, who plays Ari Gold on the hit HBO show, said during the TimesTalks London event, "I think the movie will be really satisfying. I had a lot of fun doing it and revisiting that character.

"It was exhausting, even more so. Loaded with cameos, so many that I think if it was a drinking game, you'd be drunk 18 minutes in."

He continued, "Liam Neeson would show up and be so self deprecating, playing [himself]. Mark Wahlberg is back, Pharrell Williams, every American sports star that you can think of... Mike Tyson... Every day there was a new cameo... We added actors like Billy Bob Thornton who's playing this billionaire tycoon, he was an absolute genius."

Emily Blunt says Tom Cruise protected her on set

Emily Blunt has revealed that Tom Cruise was very protective of her on the set of Edge of Tomorrow when he learned that she was pregnant.

The actress was not pregnant when the film was being shot, but when they were called back to set for some additional photography months later, she was pregnant with her now three month old daughter Hazel.

Speaking to Graham Norton the Five Year Engagment star explained, "For some additional photography I was pregnant, but it was still early and I wasn't really telling anyone. So Tom was confused as to why I wasn't engaging with all the stunts, as I was game when we did them originally.

"So I told him I was growing a human. He was so cute about it and protected me – he almost when overboard in helping me. In the end I had to say, 'Tom, I'm fine, I can do stairs!'"

Check out our interview with Emily Blunt on www.rte.ie/ten where she talks about how she's finding going back to work since giving birth, what it's like to work with Tom Cruise and her training regime for Edge of Tomorrow.

Cheryl Cole hits out at Twitter trolls

Call My Name hitmaker Cheryl Cole thinks Twitter trolls need to ''get a life''.

The 30-year-old X Factor judge insists that she pays no attention to the negative comments.

Speaking to HELLO! magazine, Cole said: ''Firstly, I only follow nice, positive people. Secondly, if someone takes the time to follow me and write a horrible comment, I just think, 'Oh, loser, get a life. What are you doing on my feed?' So no, I've learnt not to take any notice, in this business you can't not.''

Cheryl further explained why she prefers Instagram over Twitter, saying: ''Twitter can be twisted by the media. I might write something and it can be taken completely out of context. But Instagram can't be. I use it to tell my fans about what's going on in my life and the things that I like.''

Angelina Jolie says family helped in 'dark times'

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 30 Mei 2014 | 23.38

Angelina Jolie says her family helped to heal her during tough times in her life.

The Maleficent star is the mother of six children – including five-year-old twins with fiancé Brad Pitt - and reckons they helped pull her through.

The 38-year-old actress told E! News she can relate to her character in her latest film, saying: "I understood that journey.

"I've been dark, I've been hurt, I've gone walls up, angry and changed, and then children have softened me and opened me up again, and made me remember all those wonderful things and they've helped to heal me."

She added: "Our friends can do that, our loves can do that and our children do that, so it's a wonderful thing."

Last year she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning that she carried the BRCA gene, a mutation that puts a person at higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007.

Ryan Tubridy looks back ahead of Late Late finale

Host Ryan Tubridy has been looking back on the latest run of The Late Late Show ahead of tonight's season finale.

Guests this evening include singer/songwriter David Gray, Louis Walsh and his latest boyband Hometwown, as well as cast members of the hugely successful comedy Mrs Brown's Boys.

"It's been a most enjoyable season of the Late Late Show that featured all sorts of fascinating newsmakers like the extraordinary Stephanie Meehan of Priory Hall, Majella O'Donnell's head shave that raised €600,000, Former Bishop Eamonn Casey's son Peter Murphy and the wonderful NASA Commander Chris Hadfield," says Tubridy.

"The Toy Show was a blast despite my efforts at singing and dancing. I was intrigued by a comedy hero, Steve Coogan; it's always great to talk to Michael Fassbender; it was a pleasure to celebrate Brian O'Driscoll; I enjoyed the audience reaction to Gary Barlow and Ellie Goulding was a beautiful surprise!

"I'll be on 2FM all summer but there is a week here and there for downtime which will happen in the West of Ireland as usual but I was thinking of touring about. I got the idea from Kimye . . ."

True Detective upping its leads for season two

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were the magic pairing in the first run of True Detective – but HBO are looking to increase the number of stars next time around.

Season two of the highly-acclaimed drama will have three leads, it has been confirmed by the show's creator Nic Pizzolatto in an interview with website To the Best of Our Knowledge.

Recent Oscar nominees Jessica Chastain and Brad Pitt have been amongst the big names linked to True Detective's second season, but so far no cast members have been confirmed.

Deadline.com have also reported that a series of Oscar winners and nominees have been considered, including Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, Josh Brolin, Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, as well as former Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch.

Pizzolatto also revealed that the next season will move location to rural California and deal with "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system."

He added: "Not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser-known venues of California. And we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambience of the place, much like we did in season one.

Although he didn't go into detail he spoke about the casting process he said: "We've got the entire series broken out with a couple of scripts, and we'll probably start casting in earnest in the coming months."

McBusted talk to RTÉ TEN ahead of Dublin gig

Ahead of their O2 gig on Monday June 2, Tom from McBusted took a break to talk on the phone to our Barbara George and here's what he had to say for himself . . .

Barbara George (BG): Are you excited about coming about coming to Dublin and what can we expect from the gig?

Tom (T): We're extremely excited about coming to Ireland. We're right at the end of our tour now and we're very well rehearsed. We've been on tour for the last two-and-and-a-half months or so and it's just been the most insane tour ever. The crowds have so much energy and it's the biggest show we've ever put on – it's a real show, it's not just, like, a concert. There's a lot of good stuff, and it's high-energy.

BG: What's the stage show like and what's the craziest thing a fan has done at one of your shows?

T: There's all kinds of things brewing up on stage. One fan tried to get on stage the other night. We have explosions and all sorts of stuff on stage, and that's quite scary.

BG: So it's been good so far?

T: It's been amazing. The response from the crowds has been incredible because we didn't know what the reaction was going to be; we didn't know if it was going to be McFly fans, or if it was going to be a lot older people who were Busted fans ten years ago. But it was like a whole new generation of fans that are coming. It's like they were two years old when Busted were around. It's a real mix and we're very lucky. We're loving every minute of it. We'll be sad when the tour comes to an end.

BG: Are there plans for the future as a group? Do you think you guys will continue on?

T:  Yeah, well it seems likely.  It's been interesting. We didn't know what the future held for McBusted after the tour, we were just enjoying it. But it seems to have captured everyone's imagination. We're loving it. We're just having a great time. We'd love the idea of making an album. Just seeing where it goes.

McBusted play the O2 in Dublin on Monday June 2

George Michael well and resting after health scare

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 29 Mei 2014 | 23.37

Singer George Michael has left hospital and is "well and resting" after he was admitted for treatment last Thursday.

Two ambulances responded to a 999 call made by a worried friend after the 50-year-old fell ill at his north London mansion and he was rushed to hospital.

Fans of the singer will recall that the former Wham! front man - whose real name is Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou - nearly died of pneumonia in 2011.

A spokeswoman for Michael said: "In response to newspaper reports today, we can confirm George was admitted to hospital on May 22.

"He was discharged last weekend and is well and resting. He is very much looking forward to the release of his new single in July. Given the personal nature of this matter there will be no further comment."

In May last year Michael was treated in hospital following a bizarre incident on the M1 motorway in Britain. He was airlifted to hospital with a head injury inflicted after he fell from his vehicle.

Just 18 months earlier he had been close to death after being struck down with pneumonia in Vienna.

Following his brush with pneumonia in late 2011, Michael made an emotional appearance outside his London home and said it had been "touch and go" whether he lived.

Here's George Michael talking to the media after his brush with pneumonia in 2011:

Perry 'battled against' sitcoms after Friends

Matthew Perry has admitted that he fought a ten-year battle to resist stereotype casting and a return to studio sitcoms.

The 44-year-old became a global star while playing Chandler Bing on the hit comedy Friends but has yet to repeat that level of success.

Perry subsequently led the cast in three new shows - Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Mr Sunshine and Go On - but all were cancelled after just a single season.

Next year he will star in a reboot of 1970s' comedy The Odd Couple, and he told Broadcast: "I thought it was time to be in front of a studio audience once again.

"I've battled against it for ten years and finally decided that's what I really like doing and it's what I'm best at, so doing The Odd Couple was the dream."

Perry will play unkempt sports journalist Oscar Madison in the new adaptation of Neil Simon's classic play about two divorced pals sharing an apartment.

Walter Matthau played the Oscar Madison role in the film version of the play while Jack Klugman took over the mantle for the original TV series, which ran for five hugely successful seasons in the early 1970s.

"It's important to be able to play a creative part as well," Perry added. "To be able to watch over things and not just be a talking head on a TV show was important to me."

Here are the classic opening credits and theme tune for The Odd Couple:

Kimye Watch! Kim and Kanye have left Ireland

Kim Kardashian and her husband Kanye West have flown out of Cork Airport at the end of their honeymoon in Ireland.

The couple and their entourage are reported to have arrived at Cork airport in a black bus and black limousine and were taken to their private jet via the cargo area terminal.

The newlyweds boarded the jet in front of the old airport terminal at an area hidden from public view.

During their week-long honeymoon in Ireland the couple stayed at a luxury hotel in Ballyfin, Co Laois.

Their private Lear Jet apparently touched down in Cork airport on Sunday (May 25), the day after their lavish wedding celebration in Florence Italy, yet it took until Wednesday evening (May 29) before any photographic evidence emerged of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on Irish soil.

Kimye Watch reached fever pitch yesterday evening when eagle eyed locals spotted the A-List pair coming out of an Odeon Cinema in Portlaoise where they reportedly watched X-Men Days of Future Past in 3D.

Later in the day Mr and Mrs West apparently made a 20 mile trip to Tullamore to watch another film.

The couple were both wearing sunglasses and dressed in black - with Kanye wearing the hood of his jumper over his head.

Don't forget our competition to win one of two pairs of tickets to Kanye West's gigs in Marlay Park. Just tweet us @RTE_TEN where you think Kimye should visit while in Ireland. You must include the hashtag #KIMYETENCOMP to enter. Full details here

The pictures have created a buzz online with many expressing their disbelief at the potential sighting.

U2's Bono and Edge to join board of Fender guitars

U2's Bono and The Edge are set to be appointed to the board of electric guitar giants Fender.

The company – creators of the iconic Stratocaster and Telecaster ranges – is nearly 70 years old and is seeking to reinvent itself for the digital age.

According to The Irish Times, part of Fender's plans include naming Bono and the Edge from U2 to its board, both brought in by Fender's majority owner, TPG Growth.

"I believe that guitars are here to stay and, far from digital technology being their death knell, I think it throws up some new ways to power creativity and give people greater access to the huge potential of the electric guitar," the Edge wrote in an email.

Artists as diverse as Hank Marvin from pioneering British rockers, The Shadows, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton and Status Quo have had career-long associations with either the Strat or the Tele.

The Edge also noted that while recording several of U2's greatest hits, including Sunday Bloody Sunday and Pride (in the Name of Love), he used classic Fender guitars.

De Niro recalls his father in new documentary

Robert de Niro has discussed his father's difficulties coming to terms with his homosexuality in the forthcoming documentary, Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro Sr.

"He probably was (conflicted about his sexuality)," the 70-year old actor told OUT Magazine. "Being from that generation, especially from a small town upstate (in New York). I was not aware, much, of it. I wish we had spoken about it much more.

De Niros explains that his mother was reticent about things in general, so it was not discussed.

"Again, for my kids, I want them to stop and take a moment and realise that you sometimes have to do things now instead of later, because later may be 20 years from now - and that's too late."

They did not play baseball together, or engage in any of that sporty kind of bonding. "But we had a connection, " says the actor. I wasn't with him a lot, because my mother and he were separated and divorced… He was absent in some ways. (But) he was very loving. He adored me… as I do my kids."

The new documentary  is set to premiere on HBO on 9 June. See the trailer for Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro Sr below.

Drive director defends Gosling's movie

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 27 Mei 2014 | 23.37

Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn has defended Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, which has been critically panned.

Gosling's Lost River premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival last week (May 20) and received scathing reviews from many critics, while some attendees at the screening booed the film.

It follows a single mother (Christina Hendricks) who finds herself in a gloomy fantasy underworld.

Some film reviewers pointed out the similarities between Gosling and Winding Refn's directing styles.

However, Winding Refn was quick to praise his Drive star, telling New York Magazine: "I think it's a beautiful, beautiful, great movie that will grow on people. There are images from it that still stick with me.

"Because we're twins we make the same movie. Separated at birth, we found each other. That's the thing about twins. We stick together."

Ross Kemp admits having Eastenders regrets

Former soap star Ross Kemp has admitted that he harbours regrets about leaving EastEnders.

He played hard man Grant Mitchell in the BBC soap for nine years, but subsequently carved a new career hosting gritty documentary series such as Ross Kemp on Gangs.

In an interview with The Mirror, Kemp conceded: "I'm still happy doing what I do, but the older you get the less you want to be taking risks. There have been a few moments where I've thought, 'Why did I ever leave EastEnders?'

Kemp turns 50 in July and feels it. "I'm already pushing my body to the limit," he said. "I'm not going to be able to do this in a few years' time. So maybe the comfy chair is beckoning.

"I've decided I want to be that boring old man who sits in the corner. At least I'll have some good stories to tell."

Kemp added that spending prolonged periods of time away from his family while filming in some of the world's most dangerous places is less than ideal.

"It's always hard saying goodbye to my wife," he said. "I try to be upbeat and tell her I'll see her in a month or six weeks, even though you know the dangers. You just have to do that.

"I miss my family dreadfully while I'm away. They have voiced their concerns, but they understand that's how I pay the bills and how fortunate I am to do something I am passionate about. They accept these things run their course and I won't be doing this for ever."

"But I loved the experience and loved working with Justin and Marion. She's so courageous and such a wonderful actor to work with."

Kurzel's drama is scheduled for release in 2015 and also stars Paddy Considine as Banquo, Sean Harris as Macduff and Elizabeth Debicki as Lady Macduff.

Fassbender added that he was excited to work with Considine, saying:  "Paddy Considine, I've been a big fan of his for a long time, so it was great to do scenes with him as well."

Kim and Kanye said to be honeymooning in Cork

Newlyweds Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have reportedly landed in Cork for what is expected to be a quiet five-day honeymoon.

According to reports, the couple's private jet arrived in Cork Airport yesterday (May 25) following their wedding in Florence, Italy the day before.

It is not yet known where they are staying while in Ireland although it is rumoured that the acclaimed rapper and his reality TV star wife are residents in the five-star 17th century country manor Castlemartyr Resort.

However, a spokesperson for the resort told RTÉ Ten that they could "neither confirm or deny" whether the couple were staying there.

Their wedding festivities kicked off last week when the couple, and the entire Kardashian clan, touched down in Paris where they enjoyed some sightseeing, a private tour of the Palace of Versailles with their wedding guests, and a dinner party at Valentino's estate in the French countryside.

Kim and Kanye were spotted leaving their Paris residence on May 23.

The wedding guests arrived at the Palace of Versailles for a private tour.

The nuptials then took place in Florence at the Forte di Belvedere with their closest friends and family in attendance. John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, director Steve McQueen, Serena Williams, Alexander Wang, Franca Sozzani, Big Sean and Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing were among the famous faces that joined "Kimye" on their big day.

Kris Jenner posted an image of Kim with Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci

John Legend is said to have sang at the wedding with Lana Del Rey performing after dinner, her presence thought to be a gift from Kanye to his new wife as her single from The Great Gatsby soundtrack, Young and Beautiful, is Kim's favourite song.

In a speech that reportedly lasted 20 minutes, Kanye is said to have discussed the downside to fame saying, "They feel like it's ok to put you on tabloid covers to sell your image, to use you in an SNL spoof. We don't negotiate, we're not like that, we're not stupid.

"The Kardashians are an industry! At this table . . . the combination of powers . . . can make the world a better place. The most remarkable people of our time."

Kanye is said to have described Kim as "The ideal celebrity, the ideal art" and that he is excited about "spending every day of my life with Kim."

A source told Us magazine that none of the guests were surprised that Kanye made multiple speeches throughout the event saying, "We all knew those would be coming. It would have been disappointing if it didn't happen."

Another source added, "It was just the most perfect night. And for all the talk about it being over the top or crazy - it really wasn't. It was just the most beautifully put together, chic, intimate celebration. I don't think anyone will forget it."

Aslan's Christy hails wife Kathryn on Late Late

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 24 Mei 2014 | 23.38

Aslan singer Christy Dignam paid tribute to his wife Kathryn in a moving interview on Friday night's Late Late Show, saying that he could not have come through his health problems without her.

In their first TV interview together, the couple discussed Christy Dignam overcoming heroin addiction and, more recently, myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow.

At the end of the interview, Dignam said to host Ryan Tubridy: "You were saying about the support we had... I couldn't have done it without Kathryn. A sickness like that will teach you that the most important thing on this earth is family. If there's one lesson I learned through the sickness it was that."

Dignam, who has the blood disorder Amyloidosis, said that his health is "good now".

"The thing I have is called Amyloidosis and it's incurable – there's no cure for it," he said. "But you can kind of arrest it and try and hold it at bay, which is the way it is at the moment."

Watch the interview at: www.rte.ie/player.

Dignam also used the interview to highlight Kathryn's participation in the Dip in the Nip charity fundraiser for ARC Cancer Support Centre on Sunday June 8. For more, see: www.arccancersupport.ie.

Bruce Forsyth knew Dancing days were over

Strictly Come Dancing co-host Bruce Forsyth has further discussed his reasons for leaving the popular BBC One dance competition, admitting that another series would be too exhausting.

Speaking to The Sun, 86-year-old Forsyth said: "You do start to feel a bit stale, like a bit of fruit you've put in a bowl. You look at it one day and think, 'Oh - that's going off'."

He continued: "There are many reasons why I packed it in, but one was that I didn't want to do this series and suddenly in the middle of the show say, 'I can't do it any more'. I would have hated that."

Forysth added: "I had to announce each couple, run upstairs for their dance, rush down to talk to the judges, rush upstairs for the scores, rush down to introduce the next pair. If there were 16 couples I would do that 40 or 50 times a show.

"When you are working the adrenaline gets you through. I never came off asking for an oxygen mask. But I knew at [the] end of the last series it would be the end for me."

Claudia Winkleman will replace Forsyth when the show returns in the autumn.

McAvoy enjoyed wearing fake hair on X-Men set

X-Men: Days of Future Past star James McAvoy insisted on wearing hair extensions on set.

The 35-year-old Scottish actor is a huge fan of the 1970s - in which the new film is set - and McAvoy wanted to make sure he perfected his character Charles Xavier's style during the era.

Speaking to Radio Times magazine, McAvoy said: "As my wife will attest, the Seventies is my favourite decade.

"I was like, 'Yesss!' I ******* love the way I look in this film'. It's the only time I've ever done that in my whole career."

McAvoy also explained how he was left exhausted after taking on characters with psychological issues in his recent roles, adding: "There was a lot of mental illness that year. My character in Trance has had his mind molested. Bruce in Filth and Macbeth are both raving mental cases. Even in Welcome to the Punch I'm dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.

"By no means is X-Men as balls-out as those films or Macbeth, but I'm glad that Fox and [director] Bryan Singer afforded me the chance to go somewhere quite interesting with a part in a $200 million movie.

"Charles is effectively a junkie who's denying who he is. I've spent over a year now exploring skewed mental states, and this is the easiest I've found it."

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 22 Mei 2014 | 23.37

Gabriel Byrne has revealed that he prefers anonymity to receiving attention from his starring roles.

The Irish actor explained that he didn't like the "kind of attention" he garnered after appearing in HBO's In Treatment from 2008 to 2010.

According to Press Association, he said: "I like the level of anonymity I have now.

"You have to be very careful with television. I love working but I don't want that kind of attention again."

The 64-year-old actor added that his new BBC One drama Quirke could be a one-off series.

The three-part serial is based on John Banville's books, but Byrne revealed that he may not return for future adaptations.

He explained: "I don't want to turn into one of those 'detective guys', you know. [A long run] would kill me altogether."

Rory McIlroy calls off engagement to Wozniacki

Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has announced that his engagement to Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki has ended, just days after they sent out the wedding invitations.

The 25-year-old from Holywood, Co. Down made the announcement today through his communications consultancy.

In a statement, McIlroy said: "There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people.

"The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.

"I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting."

Wozniacki, a former world number one tennis player, had been caddying for McIlroy in Augusta at April's Masters tournament. But the pair recently denied reports that they were set to tie the knot this August.

Wozniacki, who agreed to marry the Northern Irishman earlier this year had said they "were working on it" when quizzed on April 10 last about a date for their wedding.

Shots to be fired in Carrigstown tonight

Last night's Fair City episode ended with Tommy toting a gun and tonight someone gets shot – but who will the victim be and will they survive?

Warning! Spolier Alert!

After months of stalking his ex-wife Judith (Catherine Byrne), Tommy (Geoff Minogue) reached breaking point in last night's Fair City episode and is holding her captive at gun point.

Speaking about the dramatic scenes Geoff Minogue said: "Tommy is pushed to the brink this week. After weeks of tormenting Judith in an attempt to win her back, it all comes to a head when he decides to take matters into his own hands and make her see sense once and for all.

"In Tommy's mind he wants to go back to a time, before Carrigstown, when he and Judith were happy in Kilkenny.   Tommy's not a bad guy, he is a man on the verge of a mental breakdown, he is seriously unwell and needs professional help and as far as he is concerned he is just doing what is necessary to put his family back together."

In tonight's episode Judith's current beau Bob (Bryan Murray) lets himself into her flat and is shocked to see the scene infront of him.

Meanwhile Jane (Rachael Pilkington) discovers Tommy's shrine to Judith and the camera he has set up. On the screen she is horrified at what is happening in the flat and immediately call the police.

As reinforcements arrive Bob makes a grab for the gun, the two men struggle and shots ring out – someone is injured, but you will have to tune in tonight to see what happens.

Review: X-Men: Days of Future Past **

Seven sequels, prequels and spin-offs later, the X-Men franchise truly jumps the quark with this muddled new instalment. Read our review.

Surely at this stage we have run out of variations on the "mindless good fun" cliche. The guilty pleasure recommendation of "nonsense but entertaining nonsense" that rolls around every summer blockbuster season.

The latest part of the X-Men saga is just plain nonsense. Not entertaining nonsense, not guilty pleasure nonsense - just plain nonsense. It's a confused and catatonic cash-in that blithely cherry picks elements of The Terminator, The Matrix, and maybe even Transformers to gather together, Avengers-style, the whole X-Men mutant crew in a final battle across time zones and generations.

The sexy ensemble (blue Hammerite lady, hairy bloke with dodgy fingernails, and conflicted metallurgist bloke) do goodly battle with The Sentinels, giant robots developed by Dr Bolivar Trask, a cunning industrialist who has outfoxed even the Nixon administration in his messianic campaign to develop his fighter bots as the ultimate weapon against the growing scourge of the X-Men muties.

Meanwhile, as it were, in the future we find chuckle brothers Magneto and Xavier (Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen) cloistered in a gothic citadel and gravely intoning that final destruction is at hand as these flying Sentinels swarm above them. The only way to save mutant-kind is to change the course of history.

Here's the science bit - the boys and girls have to send Wolverine's consciousness (don't worry you get the bod and the hair too) back in time to groovy old 1973 so he can prevent renegade mutant Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence looking red hot in blue) killing Trask, thus turning him into a martyr and actually hastening, not hindering the development of The Sentinels.

Now 1973 was a pretty interesting place. The Vietnam War was finally coming to an end, lava lamps were in, and the music was lush and funky. The sight of Wolverine gunning a sexy Chevrolet around town has its own charms and the tired old time paradox device also throws up the seemingly delicious prospect of the younger mutant ying and yang of Xavier (McAvoy) and Magneto (Fassbender) warring with each other with Wolverine as the peace maker trying to convince them that the future won't be too bright if they don't band together.

Stewart and McKellen have very little to do but stare pensively into the Shakespearian gloom as events unfold in the past but as their younger selves, McAvoy is at his soulful and doleful best while the lithe, cat-like Fassbender is at the centre of some of the best action sequences as he literally bends events to his own conflicted will.

Director and X-Men veteran Bryan Singer once again does well to balance character interaction with spectacular fight outs. Lawrence adds further star wattage and Jackman will forever be Wolverine but even these established characters have their thunder and mutant quirks stolen by new addition Quicksilver (Evan Peters), a speed freak who adds much needed vim to a turgid yarn which eventually crumbles under the portentous sense of gravitas.

Fan boys and girls with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the lore, back story and history will love it. However, notwithstanding the brilliant use of Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle and a batty finale involving RFK Stadium and President Nixon, even the most casual guilty pleasure thrill seeker may conclude that X-Men have finally jumped the quark.

John Banville concerned about TV violence

Ahead of the debut of his noir hero Quirke on BBC One, author John Banville has voiced his concern about the amount of violent crime series on television.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Banville, who writes the Quirke novels under the pen name Benjamin Black, said: "One thing that worries me about crime series these days is just how violent they all are."

Banville continued: "The vast majority of us, we go through life and we never see any violence. We might get mugged or something, but it's highly unlikely that we'll ever see a murder.

"If the Wallander books were real, the entire population of Ystad would be halved by now."

He added: "But we're bombarded with images of violence in the news and feel that somehow we're not living authentically if we're not in touch with violence. I think that's what it is. The more 'realistic' these stories are, the more we love them.

"Human beings are not expendable. A murdered human being is an extraordinary thing. A tragic thing. And I think crime writers have a duty to observe this."

Quirke begins on Sunday May 25 on BBC One at 9:00pm.

Ashes of Peter O'Toole are kept safe in Aras

Written By Unknown on Senin, 19 Mei 2014 | 23.37

Peter O'Toole's daughter Kate has revealed that the ashes of her late father are being in held in safe keeping by President Michael D Higgins in Aras an Uachtarain until he can be laid to rest in the west of Ireland.

Kate made the revelation at a memorial held in London yesterday (May 18) in honour of the actor who died last December, aged 81.

She told the audience, which included Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Stephen Fry and Omar Sharif, at London's Old Vic that President Higgins, a close friend of O'Toole, was minding the ashes until she had time to lay her father to rest near her home in Galway overlooking the sea, as were his wishes.

In a eulogy for her father, Ms O'Toole, said: "I brought my father's ashes home to Ireland where they are currently in safe deposit with the president who is minding them for me at Aras an Uachtarain until I get a chance to return home and fulfil his wishes."

President Higgins first met the late actor in 1969 when they were introduced by a mutual friend and at the memorial he said: "We all know that time spent in Peter's company could never be described as monotonous. He transformed the most routine or mundane experience into exciting drama.

"This extended to his recreation and his love of sport. I recall on many occasions watching football matches on the television with Peter and he shouting loudly and encouragingly at the screen.

"Over the years I received many messages, always pithy, on matters political or cultural, or both. Rugby was, of course, one of Peter's great passions.

"After I was elected President, he wrote to me to not only convey his good wishes but to impishly suggest that we could now both get good seats at the Six Nations test matches and to count him in for the Aviva."

Mick Jagger becomes a great-grandfather

Veteran rock star Mick Jagger has become a great-grandfather for the first time.

Hello! reports that over the weekend the 70-year-old Rolling Stones singer's granddaughter Assisi Jackson and her boyfriend Alex Key welcomed a daughter into the world.

The new arrival is the first grandchild for Assisi's mother Jagger's 42-year-old daughter Jade, who is due to give birth to her own baby boy next month.

Assisi, who is only 21, previously admitted her grandfather was delighted she was expecting a baby.

She remarked: "He said, 'Well done,' and I said, 'I didn't have to try too hard.'"

It's some welcome good news for Jagger, who was devastated in March following the suicide of his long-term girlfriend L'Wren Scott.

But Jackson reckons that Jagger won't warm to the notion of being labelled a great-grandfather: "I imagine it's nice to be a great-grandad - although I'm not sure he likes the idea of getting old, or being called one.

"I call him Mick," she added. "I wouldn't start calling him Grandpa."

Graham Norton talks chat show future

Graham Norton has revealed he will end his chat show when he begins to hate it – which he hopes will be before his audience does.

Irish comedian Graham Norton, who will host tonight's BAFTA Awards, has admitted he has no end date in mind for The Graham Norton Show.

The 51-year-old TV star said: "Well, it all depends when the BBC kick me off! If they kick me off next year, then yes, I'll keep going until then.

"It's one of those weird things - I don't know. I always said I'd retire at 50, but now I'm 51 and I'm still doing it and we're doing it for the future, I guess. And I'm still enjoying it. It's not like a chore.

"It's not like this awful thing that I've got to force myself to do - I like doing it, I like going to work. So hopefully I will start to hate it before the public start to hate it, and so I'll step away just before people are going, 'F**k off!'"

Speaking about the success of the show, Norton reckons that it is down to the changes they have made over the years. He said: "I've got older, we've moved channels, we've changed the format, so there's always something else going on with it.

"You never know - we could be cancelled tomorrow and there'll be no explanation for its longevity because it's over!"
