Luke Skywalker: "Ireland you are wonderful!"

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 31 Juli 2014 | 23.38

Director JJ Abrams and Mark Hamill have left Portmagee in Kerry after completing filming on Skellig Michael for a scene which will reportedly last one minute in Star Wars: Episode VII.

Just after his departure this morning (July 31), Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the beloved space opera, tweeted his appreciation, saying: "Ireland you are wonderful! Love the country, love the people!"

Abrams, who has been staying in the Butler Arms Hotel in nearby Waterville, completed three days of filming for the new movie, ducking both a media circus and criticism from some quarters about the use of the World Heritage Site which towers 12km off the coast of Kerry.

During the shoot, the Irish Navy operated an exclusion zone around Skeillig Michael to ward off any particularly fervent Star Wars fans and locals were sworn to secrecy.

Mark Hamill was accompanied by his wife Marilou and their three adult children, Nathan, Chelsea and Griffin during the Kerry shoot.

Tara Reid reckons there could be a real sharknado

Tara Reid, the star of cult TV B-movie Sharknado, reckons that an actual sharknado could occur in nature.

Reid made the shock revelation ahead of the screening of Sharknado 2: The Second One on Syfy on July 31. The tagline for the first one was one of the greatest in film history - "Sharknado - Enough said!".

For the uninitiated, a sharknado is an - as yet unreported - natural phenomenon that sees a giant waterspout lifting sharks out of the ocean and depositing them on land, mostly in the downtown Los Angeles area.

Reid told GQ magazine, "I mean, the chances of it happening are very rare, but it can actually happen. Which is crazy.

"Not that it – the chances of it are, like, you know, it's like probably 'pigs could fly'. Like, I don't think pigs could fly, but actually sharks could be stuck in tornadoes. There could be a sharknado."

Sharknado 2: The Second One will air on Syfy at 2.10am (not exactly primetime there, eh?) on July 31.

Star Wars 7 to shoot on the Skelligs in Kerry

Forget Ryan's Daughter, Far and Away and The Field - Star Wars Episode 7 will shoot scenes on spectacular Skellig Michael in Kerry.

This is not a Jedi mindtrick - The Kingdom has pulled off its biggest film coup yet and will join other less exotic locations such as Abu Dhabi and the Mývatn and Krafla volcano in Iceland as a filming location for the new instalment of the space opera which is due out next year.

Local newspaper Kerry's Eye reports that The Office of Public Works has confirmed that, "Skellig Michael is being made available for a film production shoot on the island . . . this production is being fully supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Irish Film Board"

The OPW says that a sixth century monastic site is being made available for a film shoot. In 1996 Skellig Michael was inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage List.

According to some reports, the island will be closed to visitors for three days at the end of August to facilitate filming with local boatman in Portmagee having reached an agreement to ferry equipment and crew across to the island.

Earlier this week, director JJ Abrams teased Star Wars fans (ie everybody) with a video of an X-Wing on the set of the new movie. Check out the clip here.

Review: Hercules ***

It's not as dumb as it looks

Director Brett Ratner lays it on thick and fast in this smart and snappy yarn from the dusty annals of ancient Greece - charismatic muscle-bound hero, wise-cracking sidekick, crumbling temples, deliciously evil baddies, and beautiful women. It's all here but hold the cheese and the one millionth extra from central casting - this Hercules is also big on myth-busting and humour.

Nothing is as it seems in this vision of ancient Greece, especially when it's comes to the duplicity of mere mortals and their cunning ways. Tales of Hercules' legendary 12 Labours (the Hydra? Bunch of blokes in fright masks, mate) are told with a knowing wink and The Rock, who's borrowed Joan Burton's hair for the role, plays the son of Zeus as a mortal with a dark secret that has tarnished the myth. It looks like there may be feet of clay in those sandals.

He's not exactly The Dark Knight riddled with existential doubt, just a decent bloke with a big spiky club who wants to do an honest day's work. This turbo-charged malarkey kicks in with a neat opening sequence that gets the origin story out of the way fast and there really is no let up in the refreshingly short running time.

Hercules is now a mercenary, leading a hardened band of men and one Amazonian woman (a flinty Ingrid Bolsø Berdal) on the borders of the Thracian Wars, willing to do battle for either side as long as the payment is in cold hard gold.

There may be feet of clay in those sandals

When the King of Thrace, played with camp gusto by John Hurt, begs them to assist in training his motley men at arms to take on an advancing army, Hercules' dormant nobility is stirred. Assisted by his loyal brigand, he springs into action and while the pitched battle scenes are more pre-watershed than pure bloodshed, the relative lack of CGI should be applauded.

The Rock may be front and centre of the action but Ratner wisely does not waste a strong supporting cast. A weathered Ian McShane is particularly droll as a seer who can tell the exact day and manner of his death, Rufus Sewell is cooly cynical and sarcastic as the most mercenary of these soldiers of fortune, and Hurt, as Lord Cotys, is the prancing genie in this chimera of mirrors and half truths.

At a neat 98 minutes, this is also one Grecian epic that won't give you a bad case of numb bum as you nod off between those spectacular battle scenes. Hercules is not as dumb as it looks.

Sales of Dolly's Jolene soared after Glasto show

Dolly Parton's Jolene has sold 214,279 digital copies in the UK since her appearance at the Glastonbury Festival in late June.

"It's always a great honour for anybody to record your songs, and oddly enough,.Jolene is a song that's been recorded more than any other song I've ever written," the country legend told The Guardian.

"More than I Will Always Love You or any of those other songs. It's always curious to see how people interpret your songs. Some people say: "Ooh, I didn't like that version," but I say: "Well, I like every version, because it's amazing how people feel and hear the songs so differently."

As to the frequent 'murdering' of Jolene in karaoke versions, Parton says: "People like to get in there and sing it. But yeah, I have seen my songs slaughtered pretty good, by some of my drunk friends. Hahaha. But it's always fun. It's always good."

First released as a single in October 1973, the song was the title track of her album of the same name. Rolling Stone magazine has since ranked it at 219 in their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Houston family upset about Whitney biopic

Cissy Houston has made an emotional appeal to the makers of an upcoming movie about her late daughter Whitney, asking director Angela Bassett to 'please please let her rest'.

The forthcoming biopic for the Lifetime channel in the US is reported to focus on the late singer's relationship with former husband Bobby Brown.

Whitney Houston died in 2012, aged 48, and according to Lifetime, the film will cover her life "from the time [Whitney and Bobby] first met at the very height of their celebrity, to their courtship and tumultuous marriage."

In a statement issued to US TV show Entertainment Tonight, Cissy said: "No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby. In the two years since Whitney's death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her.

"I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn't know her."

Maura Derrane on mend after "traumatic" birth

In a blog about her experiences as a new mother, Today host Maura Derrane has said she is only now getting back on her feet following the "traumatic" birth of her son Cal in May.

Writing from her childhood home on Inishmore for the website first1000days.ie, RTÉ presenter Derrane said she had wanted to return earlier but was in so much pain she was unable to travel.

She wrote: "There is a perception these days that a caesarean is the easy option. The phrase 'too posh to push' was coined after Hollywood stars were reportedly opting to have major surgery instead of a natural birth.

"And yes, some women get through the aftermath of a caesarean with minimum pain. But that was certainly not my experience."

She continued: "Cal's birth was traumatic. I suffered a massive bleed six weeks before my due date and that, coupled with the caesarean, certainly added to my slow recovery.

"Thankfully baby Cal arrived in perfect health, but it is only now that I am getting back on my feet."

She added: "It is such a shock to the system to have a new baby. I don't think I appreciated just how demanding the job of caring for a new-born would be. The cycle of feeding and changing can feel endless, but thankfully Cal is a great baby."

Hugh Laurie says he loathes himself on TV

Actor and singer and best-paid actor on television Hugh Laurie says he waits a full ten years before watching any of his TV performances as he loathes how he looks and sounds on screen.

The 55-year-old told The Daily Mirror: "I hate, hate, hate, hate it, but it's always been that way. I can't stand myself on voicemail or anything.

"I hate the way I sound and hate the way I look. I am resigned to perpetual discontent. Usually I need about ten years to go by and then I can look back on something and I go, well, that was OK."

Laurie has released two albums of jazz and blues and has spent nearly three years away from acting to tour. However, he will return next year with sci-fi thriller Tomorrowland.

He has previously said that his breakout role in House turned into a 'nightmare' despite the fact that he was paid a reported £250,000 an episode and won two Golden Globes for his role as crusty Dr Gregory House.

Tulisa Contostavlos' drug trial collapses

Tulisa Contostavlos' trial on drug charges has collapsed after a witness for the prosecution had their evidence called into question.

The jury at Southwark Crown Court heard that the trial had collapsed as Judge Alistair McCreath believes that undercover reporter Mazher Mahood "told lies".

The judge said: "There are strong grounds for believing that Mr Mahmood told me lies when he gave evidence," and added that as a result the case now "cannot go any further".

The jury has now been formally discharged.

Former X Factor judge Contostavlos read a statement on the steps of the court, saying: "I have not been able to work for a year and I'm now looking forward to resuming my career. I will use these experiences to make me stronger.

"I would like to thank all the people who have supported me through this terrible ordeal, including my fans and, of course, my legal team."

Contostavlos had pleaded not guilty to a charge of being concerned with the supply of class A drugs.

The story was was reported in The Sun on Sunday newspaper in June 2013.

A spokesperson for the publication said that Mahood has been suspended pending an internal inquiry.

They said: "We are very disappointed with this outcome, but do believe the original investigation was conducted within the bounds of the law and the industry's code. This was demonstrated by the CPS decision to prosecute.

"The Sun, of course, takes the judge's remarks very seriously.

"Mr Mahmood has been suspended pending an immediate internal investigation."

Look! Dublin Zoo welcomes bull elephant calf

Dublin Zoo has celebrated the arrival of a new Asian elephant. The as-yet unnamed calf was both to mother Yasmin at 7.22am on Thursday, July 17.

The healthy bull is an estimated 1.2 metres tall and weighs approximately 80kg, equivalent to the weight of an adult human.

The new arrival, born after a 22-month gestation period, joins the rest of the herd - Bernhardine, Anak, Asha, mum Yasmin and dad Upali - in the Kaziranga Forest Trail at Dublin Zoo.

Paul O'Donoghue, assistant director at Dublin Zoo said, "We are absolutely thrilled with the new arrival. The calf was born within three minutes and after eight minutes he was up and taking his first steps, watched closely by his mum Yasmin and the rest of the females in the herd.

"Yasmin is an experienced mother and is bonding well with the calf, which is very strong and suckling well. He has been given a warm welcome by the rest of the herd who are being very protective.

"This male is a significant birth because he will play an important role in the conservation of Asian elephants."

The newborn is Yasmin's third calf and is a success for Dublin Zoo as part of the international breeding programme established to assist the survival of the Asian elephant.

Dublin Zoo and The Natural Confectionary Company, new sponsors of the Asian elephant habitat, are running a competition to name the new arrival.

Entries should be inspired by the elephant's Indian origins and will be accepted through the company's Facebook page.

The cause of death is not yet known, but apparently an ambulance was called to Garner's Los Angeles home last night (19 July) but he was deceased by the time paramedics arrived.

Though best remembered for the role of private eye Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files, Garner's breakout TV role was gambler Bret Maverick on the 1950s Western Maverick.

He also enjoyed a considerable film career and featured in the classic WWII film The Great Escape (1963), and played Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe in Marlowe (1969), as well as starring in western comedies Support Your Local Sheriff! and Support Your Local Gunfighter!

In the 1970s he landed the lead in The Rockford Files, which ran for six seasons and saw Garner win an Emmy for his performance as a private investigator with a smooth tongue and low pain threshold, who lived in a mobile home by the beach in Malibu.

In 2000, after an operation to replace both knees, Garner starred alongside Clint Eastwood as astronauts in the movie Space Cowboys.

Garner suffered ill health for much of his later life and had quintuple bypass heart surgery in 1988 and suffered a stroke in 2008. He is survived by his wife Lois (they married in 1956), and daughters Gigi and Kim.

"I'm not flashy," Garner told Playboy magazine in 1981, "I do humour; I don't do comedy. Humour is much more subtle than comedy, and it takes a longer time to understand the characters.

"I'm much more interested in characters than flash, because flash hits quick and leaves quick, but characters go on and on."

Here's a brilliant Youtube tribute to James Garner, The Rockford Files and the show's great theme tune:

Kodaline don't stick to gig formulas

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 19 Juli 2014 | 23.37

Irish lads Kodaline insist there is no such thing as a perfect gig. So how do they connect with the crowd?

The High Hopes hitmakers insist that they don't have a specific ''formula'' for a successful show because they know every venue and audience is different.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz, frontman Steve Garrigan, said: ''I don't think there are set key ingredients that act as a recipe for a perfect gig.

''Obviously the crowd and their reaction are very important but we treat each gig very differently and wouldn't apply one formula to make all successful.

''Plus there isn't such a thing as a perfect gig. You always make mistakes and the key to a successful gig is turning the mistakes into great, enjoyable music.''

When asked about the follow-up to last year's album In a Perfect World, he added: ''We've actually already started to work on our second album. When we haven't been touring we've been in the studio and are about half-way through so far so hope to finish it by the end of the year. That way we will be ready to share some new music with our fans early next year.''

Cheryl casts doubt over expanding family

Parachute singer Cheryl Fernandez-Versini may not be starting a family with her recently wed French hubby.

The 31-year-old X Factor judge, who recently walked down the aisle with entrepreneur Jean-Bernard, revealed that kids may not be on the cards for the newlyweds in the future.

In a candid interview with The Times Magazine, Cheryl said: "Only possibly [having kids]. Because I went through a real phase in my life recently, of like: maybe it's not for me. Because you just assume it's a natural part of your life. If it happens, don't get us wrong it happens. But it's not in me plans.

"I just feel… new. I've took my two years and I've just grown. I'm a woman now."

Cheryl, who was married to footballer Ashley Cole from 2006 - 2010, further revealed that she's letting go of the past ,saying: "You know what I also realised these past years? I refuse to let somebody else's s**ty behaviour change me fundamentally. So because you treat me like s***, I'm not going to become bitter and twisted. I'm going to remain the person I am, with the values and beliefs that I had, and let you deal with your s***."

New stories from Elmore Leonard due 2015

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 17 Juli 2014 | 23.37

A collection of previously unpublished short stories by the late Get Shorty writer Elmore Leonard will be released next year.

Expect a film or two to materialise some time after the fiction appears, given Leonard's ready adaptability for the big screen.

Get Shorty was adapted into a successful film starring John Travolta. Leonard's Out of Sight was also made into a movie starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez.

Leonard's novel Rum Punch became Quentin Tarantino's much-celebrated Jackie Brown. The most recent Leonard adaptation, Life of Crime - inspired by the writer's The Switch - will hit cinemas in September.

The new, as yet unpublished stories venture  "from the bars of small-town New Mexico to a military base in Kuala Lumpur." They were mostly written while Leonard was working as a copywriter writing car adverts in a Detroit advertising agency in the 1950s.

Leonard wrote 45 best-selling, yet convincingly-executed crime novels. The author would arise at five every morning and write for two hours before work, selling his first story, the western, Trail of the Apache, in 1951. He argued that adverbs in fiction were a "moral sin.'  "I used up all my adverbs when I was writing car catalogues for Chevrolet," he wryly observed.

Weidenfeld & Nicolson will publish Leonard's The Unpublished Stories in Autumm 2015. "Leonard wrote dialogue like a screenwriter, could build a character you can picture in just a few lines, " said Sophie Buchan, who acquired the stories for Weidenfeld. "And it's astonishing that, so early in his career, these gifts are already on display."

Leonard counselled aspirant writers to "never open a book with weather", "keep your exclamation points under control", and his "most important rule … If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it."

Marvel unveil black Captain America

First it was the new female Thor and now Marvel Comics has unveiled a black Captain America in the latest shake-up of its superhero characters.

Marvel will replace lantern-jawed, all-American hero Steve Rogers with Sam Wilson, better known as the Falcon in the Marvel universe.

The announcement was made on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report last night (July 16). Fans had long expected the shift from Rogers to his old ally Wilson, who debuted in 1969 and was the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics.

Marvel also says it has plans for other Avengers. Iron Man, Tony Stark, is getting a new outfit and moving to San Francisco with the new name 'Superior Iron Man'.

And according to Marvel's editor-in-chief, Axel Alonso, "He will be 'a character that's hard to root for."
