Eurosong tonight on Late Late show

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 28 Februari 2014 | 23.37

Eurosong, the search for Ireland's entry to Eurovision 2014 will take place tonight on The Late Late Show.

There are five acts competing to sing and fly the flag for Ireland in Copenhagen, Denmark where the Eurovision will take place this year from Thursday May 8.

Last year Ryan Dolan qualified in the top ten after the semi-final of the competition however he was placed last in the final in Malmö, Sweden.

The Late Late Show presenter Ryan Tubridy told RTÉ TEN that Eurosong is all about "hope" this year: "We hope that we're going to win it, we hope that we're going to get back in the game and hopefully bring something home.

"People are saying that to get in the top ten would be an achievement and I'd love to see something like that happening. Actually I want to win it but top ten will do me for now."

He added: "The key thing is the mix, there's a variety of ages and experience, styles of music. There's Ballads, there's Pop, there's Rock 'n'Roll, so with all of that going on we're in business, vis-à-vis giving the choice to the people. Choice is good."

Patricia Roe will sing Don't Hold On, Eoghan Quigg will follow with The Movie Song, then Can-Linn featuring Kasey Smith will perform Heartbeat, Andrew Mann is next with Be Mine and finally Laura O'Neill will sing You Don't Remember Me.

The winning song will be voted for by the viewers of tonight's Late Late Show and a special Eurosong panel who will also be on the programme, so stay tuned to RTÉ One at 9.35pm and all will be revealed.

Cormac Battle, Ryan and Andrew Mann

Eoghan Quigg

Patricia Roe and Ryan

Laura O'Neill, Ryan and Billy McGuinness

Heartbeat singer and former Wonderland band member Kasey Smith told us: "I'm excited; I just can't wait to get up there. I am obviously nervous as well, which would be normal. I can't wait...to get going."

Former Dove singer and mentor to Can-Linn featuring Kasey, Hazel Kaneswaren added that she is enjoying the Eurosong experience: "For me it's a great experience because it's not doing what I did before. I was a singer and thank God I had that experience so I can mentor Kasey in that way.

"It's great for me being the mentor and managing all the stuff, I would never have known how to put a song on iTunes before, I would never known how to organise a Photo Call, organise a press tour and all that kind of stuff, so it's a new string to my bow so I'm happy."

While presenter of 2fm's Battle Axe and Andrew's mentor Cormac Battle has the support of his colleagues, he added: "...unfortunately I can't use that to my advantage which I would have liked to but I was told...many times 'You're not getting any special treatment!'"

He added that coverage on the station of the Eurosong entry songs has been equal and balanced: "People are behind me but in a quiet way, in a civilian way... If Andrew's being played then everyone is being played and vice versa.

"In some ways I'm glad it has been fair and nobody has does a runner with me because... I'd rather win this without any kind of nonsense at all."

Kerbdog singer Battle wrote the song Be Mine which Andrew Mann will perform and the Dublin singer said: "I love songs that have massive big anthemic passionate vocals and that's what Cormac wrote and when he asked me to do it last December, I was honoured."

Former X Factor contender Eoghan Quigg had high praise for Eurosong: "It's a great platform for someone to get themselves out there on a European level and to represent your country would be an absolute honour."

The 21-year-old Northern Ireland singer added: "I think on the night it comes down to the performance and to who the public are going to choose. The only thing I can say from The X Factor stuff, I'm going to take my experience from there and try to not get nervous and just try to give a great performance as I always try to do."

He added: "Back in The X Factor I was 16, I was very young, it was an amazing experience and it's given me an amazing platform but this time around I think I'm the right age, I'm more mature, I know a bit more about the industry and I'm hungry for it so I'm glad to be here."

Quigg, who will sing Karl Broderick's The Movie Song added: "[Eurovision] is Gospel in our house. My granny's the biggest fan and once she heard I was going into the Eurosong she was absolutely over the moon, my family as well."

Mentor Mark Murphy said: "Any 15-year-old told 'You've got it' by Simon Cowell has to have talent and I believe my act Eoghan Quigg has all the qualities needed to represent Ireland at the highest level."

The song, You Don't Remember Me, will be sung by Laura O'Neill who shared her pre-Eurosong feelings: "I'm an underdog because no one knows who I am but if anything it gives me the strongest position because I've nothing to lose.

"I don't have an ego, I'm not trying to protect something that I've already done, I'm going out with a fresh start. It's a blank canvas."

The 25-year-old Dublin singer feels well prepared and has had help from a well-known Irish singer: "Christy [Dignam, lead singer with Aslan] is helping me out a massive amount. His style of singing is just outrageous. I've had lessons all over the world and this is by far the best one I've ever had."

Her mentor and Christy's band mate Billy McGuinness added: "Joe Jewell the guitarist from Aslan produced the song, Don Mescall who wrote Too Late for Hallelujah and Lucie Silvas who has written for Liberty X, Girls Aloud, Nadine Coyle two brilliant songwriters [wrote the song]. Alan [Downey] and Rod [O'Brien] from Aslan are in the band."

However McGuinness does have some views on how he believes Eurosong could be improved: "We need to lose the text vote and go back to an anonymous panel; it has served us well in the past. Whenever we won, whenever Ireland won, it was not text vote."

Wicklow native Patricia Roe spoke about her entry Don't Hold On: "The Eurovision Song Contest is spectacular, I look forward to it every year. I have always wanted to represent my country in it, hence three attempts to get there! As a proud Irish woman - that would be such a privilege."

Her mentor and sister Valerie Roe added: "Don't Hold On is a compelling and passionate song that makes my heart beat faster but also break a little bit at the same time! I want this opportunity so much for Trisha. She has been so close so many times. I think this will be her chance to finally shine and for everyone to experience her extraordinary talent."

Aidan Turner lands lead role in Poldark reboot

The Hobbit star Aidan Turner has landed the lead role in a remake of classic TV drama Poldark.

The 30-year-old Irish actor will take on the part of Ross Poldark in Debbie Horsfield's adaptation of Winston Graham's acclaimed novels set in 18th century Cornwall.

The series previously ran between 1975 and 1977 with Robin Ellis in the lead role.

Speaking about the project, Aidan told the BBC: "I'm very excited to play Ross Poldark for the BBC and it's obviously a huge challenge to honour the extraordinary character Winston Graham created and who Debbie Horsfield has brought new life to. Irish go Wilde in Hollywood

Conan O'Brien and YouTube founder Chad Hurley were honoured last night at the US-Ireland Alliance's 9th annual Oscar Wilde: Honouring the Irish in Film Pre-Academy Awards event.

The event began with a poignant tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman. Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns in his opening speech said: "Oscar Wilde, tonight's patron saint, imagined death as a place to 'forget time, forgive life and to be at peace,' and we hope this is true for Phil."

Joel McHale presented Conan with his award while YouTube personality Shay Carl presented to Hurley.

Conan joked that he is truly Irish unlike previous honourees: "J.J. Abrams, Russian Jew Paul Rudd" and then listed an imagined group of past honourees, including Idi Amin.

Fresh from their debut appearance on Conan, Irish band The Strypes, wowed the crowd that included dozens in the music business.

L.A. Galaxy and Irish footballer Robbie Keane introduced The Strypes and invited them along to the LA Galaxy training session.

Honoree Chad Hurley used Google to diligently confirm his credentials for the award and relayed that his connection to Ireland dates back to the eighteenth century and thanked "my family and, especially one man…Daniel Hurley who first came to this country and in a way made this all possible."

Sinéad O'Connor attacks "Pinnocchio" Sheridan

Sinéad O'Connor has penned an open letter to film director Jim Sheridan in which she refers to him as "Pinnocchio" and discusses the fallout from an alleged incident that took place between them.

In the first paragraph of the 1900-word letter, which O'Connor has posted on her official website, she writes: " . . . and as if I'm "mad".. which you mockingly called me over and over when I was 20, and as musical 'flavour of the month' you wanted to use me and be around me, though you had not an ounce of respect for me.

" . . . Indeed you were Hollywood's 'flavour of the month' yourself at the time. I recall.. possibly similarly surrounded, such is the whore's kiss that is show business in Ireland."

O'Connor goes on to discuss an incident involving her and Sheridan, and signs off, "Shame on you as long as you go to your grave without being honest upon this matter. Your nose reaches from here to Hell's Kitchen and back a thousand times. Pinnocchio Sheridan."

Watch! Hip Hop version of Achy Breaky Heart

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 26 Februari 2014 | 23.37

This is so outrageous we just had to share it with you - the hip hop version of Billy Ray Cyrus' hit country song Achy Breaky Heart - jaw-dropping stuff.

Cyrus, Miley's father and the singer of the worldwide 1992 hit, has resurrected the country earworm with the help of rapper Buck 22 and produced a bizarre video for the rapper's track Achy Breaky 2.

The video opens with American chat show host Larry King cautioning viewers that there has been an "unidentified flying object seen transcending over Europe" and everything just gets weirder from there.

Speaking about the collaboration, Buck 22, whose parents are jazz drummer Bill Elliott and veteran pop/R&B singer Dionne Warwick, said: "I asked [Billy Ray Cyrus] if he would mind if I could take a crack at remaking Achy Breaky Heart and he looked at me for a moment, and said, 'Lots of people have tried already, but go for it'.

"He didn't have a clue that I had already gone into the lab and cooked up a demo of what I thought would be a fun EDM/hip hop styled version, which at the time only had a sample from the original of his voice. He liked what he heard and, weeks later, arrived at the session to record this track."

And while we certainly wouldn't be fans of Achy Breaky 2, it seems plenty of people are, with it becoming a huge hit on urban radio in the US, even beating out Drake on Billboard's rap chart.

Achy Breaky 2 debuted at number 11 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, putting Drake's Worst Behavior at 12.

Do you think it could become a big hit over here? Check out the video below and let us know. Be warned, it certainly will not be to everyone's taste!

Ripper Street to return to Ireland

Axed BBC One period crime drama Ripper Street is now set to return for a third season, and will once again be filmed in Ireland.

Confirmation by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board and Element Pictures of the show's Irish return followed the news that Amazon Prime Instant Video - formerly LoveFilm - had struck a deal to revive the BBC series, which stars Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg.

The deal means that the new, third season will debut on Amazon Prime Instant Video before airing later on BBC One.

Filming will begin in May and the production will again be based in Clancy Barracks in Dublin for several months. The first and second series of Ripper Street employed 5,000 Irish cast, extras and crew and contributed €20m in total to the Irish economy.

James Hickey, Chief Executive Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, said: "This is very good news for the Irish film and television industry. Ripper Street has benefited from the Irish Film Board's International Production Fund which aims to attract major TV and film projects to film on location in Ireland with Irish cast and crew.

"Ripper Street is a perfect example of a series which has showcased Irish actors, the excellent work of Irish crew and Ireland as a film location to audiences all over the world. We are delighted to see it return to Ireland for a third season with a new deal involving Amazon Prime Instant Video."

Element Pictures' Andrew Lowe said: "We are delighted to welcome back our partners Tiger Aspect and Lookout Point and writer Richard Warlow for a third season of the brilliant Ripper Street. We look forward to helping them realise this next chapter in the Ripper Street story.

"We are immensely proud of the sterling work of the Irish cast and crew who have helped make Ripper Street such a critical and commercial success. We particularly want to acknowledge the support of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board which proved crucial to securing Ripper Street to shoot in Ireland for a third year."

Tiger Aspect's Head of Drama, Will Gould, said: "In the past year we've transmitted two series of Ripper Street in the UK, had highs of eight million viewers, sold the show to over 150 countries, got BAFTA nominated and [were] voted Radio Times Best Show of the Year, were cancelled and resurrected. That's some journey.

"And, of course, we're indebted to our incredible fans that have been so vocal and passionate and spurred us on. The third series promises to be the best yet."

Maura Derrane: "I forget that I'm pregnant"

Today show co-host Maura Derrane has said she "forgets" she is pregnant "most of the time," and says she's "feeling really good."

Speaking to the RTÉ Guide, the 43-year-old presenter said: "I'm actually feeling really good, apart from heartburn. I actually forget that I'm pregnant most of the time, to be totally honest!

"There's definitely movement and that feels really weird when it happens for the first time, but when you're pregnant all these little feelings and movements mean so much."

Derrane, who stars on the cover of this week's Guide with her Today co-host, expectant father Dáithí Ó Sé, added that her husband, TD John Deasy, is "over the moon" about the baby news: "I think he's going to be an amazing dad; he's very different from me, he's much quieter and a deep thinker. I'm not like that!

I can imagine him being very good - his calm demeanour is going to be needed!"

You can catch the full interview in the RTÉ Guide, which is on sale now.

Ó Briain has "no problem" with all-male panel ban

Dara Ó Briain has said he has been misquoted by the media in their reporting of his response to the BBC decision to end all-male line-ups on comedy panel shows.

Writing on Twitter, the Mock the Week presenter said: "To clarify, yet again. I have no problem with a policy of no all-male panel shows. I just wouldn't have announced it."

He added: "The same very funny women will be on all these shows and don't deserve anyone to regard that booking as being because of an edict."

Ó Briain's tweets followed media coverage of his interview with the Radio Times, in which he took issue with the BBC announcing its decision to end all-male panels.

Radio Times quoted Ó Briain as saying: "I wouldn't have announced it, is what I'd say. Because it means [Mock the Week guests] Katherine Ryan or Holly Walsh, who've been on millions of times, will suddenly look like the token woman.

"It would have been better if it had evolved without showing your workings, if you know what I mean. Legislating for a token woman isn't much help."

Ó Briain continued: "A certain number of women want to go into comedy, and they should be cherished and nurtured, but you're not going to shift the fact that loads more men want to do it."

He added: "I wish a tenth of the energy that was put into the women-on-panel-shows debate was put into women in computer coding, in which there are hundreds of thousands of jobs in Europe, and 11% of them are done by women.

"It seems a more sensible challenge than these 300 people [in stand-up comedy] and how they are represented."

A BBC spokesperson said: "We've had fantastic feedback on this from female talent and viewers who felt that change wasn't happening fast enough. We're confident that a wider range of voices and opinions will make for even better telly."

Sinead O'Connor wants face tattoos removed

Taking to Twitter to look for advice Sinead asked her followers if they knew anywhere good she could get them removed.

The singer wrote:  "Ok, it's time to get this stupid sh*t off my face.

"Any1 know an excellent tattoo removal person? Someone said a guy in Harley st can do in one shot... Any1 know him? Or similar here? [sic]."

The singer was first pictured with the B and Q inkings on her face while performing at Bestival in the Isle of Wight last September.

O'Connor reportedly decided to get her cheeks tattoos after she had a row with a man. She explained at the time that she chose such visible spot on her face so that she would have a constant reminder of their argument.

Billy Connolly fan spotted Parkinson's disease

Billy Connolly realised he was suffering from Parkinson's disease after a fan brought it to his attention.

The 71-year-old comedian revealed how a chance encounter with a Tasmanian doctor, who noticed a problem with the way Billy walked, led to an almost instant diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Connolly, who is married to psychologist Pamela Stephenson and has five children from his two marriages, told a US radio station: "It was the strangest thing of all. I was walking through the lobby and every time I had gone through there was a crowd of boys and girls and a couple of adults. It turned out they were dancers from Australia.

"The guy who was in charge of them came over to me one day and said, 'Billy, I'm a big fan, I'm from Tasmania'.

"He said, 'I'm a surgeon and I have been watching you walking, you have a strange gait'. That was the way he put it.

"He said 'You're showing distinct signs of early onset Parkinson's disease, see your doctor'. I think it was the way I held myself when I was walking. Then they did blood tests and various other little bits and pieces and told me I had it."
