Red carpet report: Oscars 2014

We choose the best and worst Oscars red carpet looks for 2014.

Topping our best dressed list has to be Cate Blanchett, who stunned in a nude Armani Prive gown. The deserved Best Actress winner often turns to the Italian designer for the biggest red carpet events, and it's not hard to see why.

She looked otherworldly in this romantic but modern number which was embellished with giant sequins and Swarovski crystals.

Also impressing was Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong'o, who chose a Grecian style, flowing baby blue Prada dress. She finished off the fairytale look with a Fred Leighton gold and diamond headband.

Kate Hudson was the very picture of old Hollywood glamour in Atelier Versace. This dramatically draped white silk dress featured a plunging neckline, shoulder pads, and a sprinkling of shimmer. Top marks. 

Jennifer Lawrence repeated her performance from last year by tripping on the red carpet in her orange Dior strapless gown with a peplum. This simple and stunning column dress was complimented by short, slicked back hair. A grown-up and beautiful look from the American Hustle star.

Charlize Theron also cut a statuesque figure in Dior. This very dramatic number featured invisible straps and a pleated train.

Amy Adams chose a strapless navy blue Gucci dress for this year's ceremony. A very nice and sophisticated number, but nothing too exciting. She wore her hair slicked back and minimal jewellery to complete the elegant look.

Angelina Jolie stunned on the red carpet wearing perennial red carpet favourite Elie Saab. This fabulous, shimmery gown featured long sleeves, sheer panelling and a deep plunging back.

Sandra Bullock looked beautiful wearing a draped navy blue Alexander McQueen satin gown. The sweetheart neckline and pleated detailing gave the dress a very feminine feel. 

Emma Watson chose a shimmery gunmetal grey Vera Wang for her red carpet appearance. The T-shirt shape top is pretty cool, but overall it's not as exciting as her previous red carpet choices.  

Margot Robbie, The Wolf of Wall Street's blonde bombshell, has gone brunette. We barely recognised the stunning star, who was wearing a strapless Saint Laurent gown.

Penelope Cruz is utterly fabulous, but this gúna is not working for us. She's wearing a pale pink Giambattista Valli gown with a ribbon belt, which is all a bit too sugary sweet.

Seven of the Best for Gravity at Oscars

Gravity was the big winner at the Oscars in Hollywood on Sunday night, winning seven Oscars, including Best Director, while 12 Years a Slave was named Best Picture.

Along with the Best Director award for Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity also won the Oscars for Best Cinematography, Film Editing, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

As expected, Matthew McConaughey was named Best Actor for Dallas Buyers Club, with co-star Jared Leto winning Best Supporting Actor.

Favourite Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for Blue Jasmine, with another favourite, Lupita Nyong'o, winning Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 12 Years a Slave.

The award for Best Adapted Screenplay went to John Ridley for 12 Years a Slave, with Spike Jonze winning Best Original Screenplay for Her.

Frozen won Best Animated Feature and Best Song for Let It Go. The Great Beauty was named Best Foreign Language Film, with 20 Feet from Stardom winning Best Documentary Feature.

Blanchett almost missed her category being called

Oscar winner Cate Blanchett almost missed her category being called at the Oscars as she was at the bar with Julia Roberts.

The Australian star took home the Best Actress Award at this year's Oscars for her work in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine and has revealed that she made it back to her seat just in time.

Speaking to E! News she explained, "The blessing and the curse of this is that [the award] happens at the arse end of the evening. You watch so many other extraordinary people go up there and you lose track of the fact that you're even nominated, and you get taken by surprise, and 'it's my turn'.

"I was with Julia Roberts at the bar for rather too long! And I just got back to my seat in time."

Ellen's Oscar tweet breaks world record

Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres organised a selfie to be taken at last night's ceremony and the pic has broken world records.

The record for the most retweeted picture had been held by American President Barack Obama but DeGeneres broke that last night at the 86th Academy Awards.

Her picture was taken by Bradley Cooper and features Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, DeGeneres, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o and her brother and Angelina Jolie.

The presenter tweeted the picture from @The EllenShow and wrote: "If only Bradley's arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars".

Obama's pic of himself and Michelle after he was voted in for a second term, which said "Four more years" was retweeted 781,529 times however DeGeneres' pic was retweeted 2,311, 752 times and counting!

Irishman's company created Gravity's effects

The Oscar-winning visual effects in Gravity were created by Framestore, the company co-founded by Dublin-born and educated William Sargent.

Framestore's Tim Webber, Chris Lawrence, David Shirk and Neil Corbould were honoured with the Visual Effects Oscar at the Academy Awards on Sunday night.

Sargent spent some of his early years in Brazil but returned to his birthplace to attend boarding school.

He later studied Business and Law at Trinity College Dublin and co-founded Framestore in 1986.

Nick Grimshaw rushed to hospital during show

BBC Radio 1 presenter Nick Grimshaw was rushed to hospital during his breakfast show this morning after he swallowed a shard of glass.

The 29-year-old star took to his Twitter page to assure fans that he was doing fine, writing: "Went to hospy, had X-rays, coughed it up, all fine now."

He also joked: "I can eat glass in a circus now if all else fails."

Fearne Cotton, who  presents the show after Grimshaw's at 10am, stood in for Nick and assured listeners that he was going to be ok, saying: ''He's going to be absolutely fine. He's just gone to hospital to have a little check.''

This morning was Nick's first day back in the studio since returning from a trip to Kenya for Sport Relief.

Mirren is rooting for 12 Years a Slave at Oscars

Helen Mirren has revealed that she hopes 12 Years a Slave will be recognised at today's Oscars while acknowledging it has some tough competition.

The actress admitted that she found it very difficult to vote at this year's Academy Awards and told E!, "I really want 12 Years a Slave to be recognised. I really hope that happens but they're all such great movies this year. It's a very tough competition."

The 68-year-old star also took a moment to praise young Hollywood actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong'o saying, "Lupita Nyong'o, she just looks amazing now. I also think Jennifer Lawrence is spectacular as well. The two of them together is just a dream really to see and they are just so sweet as well. They seem to be just so relaxed and they seem to have it all in proportion."

Both Nyong'o and Lawrence are nominated in the Best Supporting Actress categories for their work in 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle respectively.

Bruce Dern was first choice for Nebraska

Nebraska director Alexander Payne has said that he first envisioned Bruce Dern playing the lead role when he read the script ten years ago.

Dern, who is nominated in the Best Actor category at tonight's Oscars, was the first person to jump to Payne's mind. The filmmaker explained to Parade, "He's the first guy who jumped to mind when I first read the script ten years ago.

"I thought, 'Oh, this could be a good part for Bruce Dern'. Then years went by because I didn't want to do another road picture, and then the time came to make it, and I still met probably 50 guys his age just for due diligence, but I circled back around to Mr Dern."

Dern's co-star June Squibb is nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar and Payne commented on how the two stars are loving the attention, "It's really lovely to see their reactions to the attention they are getting. Younger actors will say, 'Oh pshaw pshaw. It's just nice to be nominated. Oh, who, me?' When they're just desperate for it underneath.

"Meanwhile, Bruce and June are lapping it up and openly loving it by saying, 'We deserve this attention. We wanted it. This is so sweet'. They're so openly happy and grateful. Their reaction is very honest."

12 Years a Slave wins at Independent Spirit Awards

12 Years a Slave was the big winner at the Film Independent Spirit Awards taking home five gongs for Best Director and Best Feature.

The Steve McQueen helmed film also won awards for Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o and Best Cinematography.

Dallas Buyers Club was another big winner at yesterday's awards with Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto taking home the trophies for Best Lead Male and Best Supporting Male respectively.

Cate Blanchett won the award for Best Lead Female for her work in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

Father Ted writer will never revive the series

Father Ted co-writer Graham Linehan has said that he never plans to re-visit the hit comedy show.

Speaking to the Radio Times Linehan revealed that he often gets sent in suggestions for new episode plots but he is happy to leave the show at its original run of 25 episodes.

Linehan explained, "I would never bring Dougal back. Someone suggested to me a way of doing it but I am totally a different person now. We have said everything we have to about the imaginary world of priests."
