Karl Urban lands role in Pete's Dragon remake

Star Trek star Karl Urban has joined the cast of Disney's Pete's Dragon remake as a replacement for Michael C Hall.

Hall had to step down from his unspecified role in the movie due to scheduling issues.

Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, Wes Bentley and newcomer Oakes Fegley will also feature in the remake of the 1977 film, which featured an animated dragon and live-action actors.

The new film is not expected to be a musical, and will use CGI to create the dragon.

Pete's Dragon follows the story of a young boy who escapes from his abusive adoptive parents with his pet dragon.

David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints) will direct the film, while Jim Whitaker (The Odd Life of Timothy Green) is set to produce.

Jack Reynor wins Sundance Award

Irish actor Jack Reynor has won the World Cinema Special Jury Prize for Acting at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. 

Twitter is awash with wonderful reports of the news and Scainnain.com explained how the festival came to an end last night with the annual award ceremony.

Reynor received the accolade for his role in Gerard Barrett's film Glassland about a young guy struggling with his mother's alcohol addiction.

Glassland will be released in Ireland on April 17, 2015.

Katy Perry prepares for tonight's Super Bowl

Pop star Katy Perry will perform the Super Bowl Half-Time show this evening, describing the honor as the "biggest event" in her career.

Launching the event during the week, Perry described the experience as "so exciting" however she added that she was "more nervous about this [press] particular event" than the actual Superbowl today!

The singer also said that even though she only has 12 and a half minutes, she plans to pack a  few costume changes in there and bets are being places about what she will wear!

"Everyone has been asking me if I'm going to be nervous before the halftime show," she told Billboard Magazine, "I'm like, 'I'm...human. This is the biggest event of my career.'"

She is feeling the pressure because she's performing in front of her "widest audience ever".

"I want the show to be quintessential Katy. It's like the exclamation point on the whole last cycle.

"This is the cherry on top to everything I've already done."

Justin Timberlake confirms Jessica Biel pregnancy

Justin Timberlake has confirmed that his wife Jessica Biel is pregnant with the couple's first child.

Timberlake shared a photograph of himself kissing Biel's baby bump in a birthday message to his Instagram followers.

He wrote: "Thank you EVERYONE for the Bday wishes! This year, I'm getting the GREATEST GIFT EVER. CAN'T WAIT. #BoyOrGirl #YouNeverKnow #WeDontEvenKnow #WeAreTakingBets"

Rumours of Biel's pregnancy had been widely reported on in the media over the last few months, although the couple remained tight-lipped until Saturday (January 31).

The couple have been together since early 2007, and got engaged four years later. They married in Fasano, Italy at the exclusive Borgo Egnazia resort in October 2012.

Scarlett Johansson hails hunky Chris Hemsworth

Scarlett Johansson says Chris Hemsworth is as hot when he's out cold on a plane as he is when he's wide awake.

She presented him with the Excellence in Film Award last night at the 2015 G'Day USA Gala and Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts International Awards.

The 30-year-old recalled being on a plane during their Avengers press tour with Hemsworth and their co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Chris Evans.

"Chris decided to take a little cat nap," Johansson recalled. "He collapsed into a giant perfect heap, his lion's mane gracefully falling around his prominent chiseled features.

"'My, God,' proclaimed Ruffalo, 'what a specimen.'" Evans added, "It's incredible - the man is perfect even when he's drooling."

Perry responds to popstar rivalry

Katy Perry has made it clear that she will always protect herself and her reputation against anyone who tries to challenge her.

In an interview with Billboard magazine ahead of her Half-Time Superbowl show performance later today, she said: "If somebody is trying to defame my character, you're going to hear about it."

Taylor Swift described a fellow female musician last year as her "straight-up enemy" who tried to "sabotage [Swift's] entire arena tour".

The next day Perry tweeted, "Watch out for the Regina George [a Mean Girls reference] in sheep's clothing".

Rose Byrne returns in X-Men: Apocalypse

Rose Byrne will reprise her role as Moira MacTaggert in X-Men: Apocalypse.

According to Entertainment Weekly, she will join Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm, who will also be reintroduced into the hugely successful Marvel Comics' franchise.

Apocalypse writer Simon Kinberg said she will have a significant role in the film. "We ended First Class with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them," he explained.

Kinberg also teased a possible Professor X plot, saying: "It's certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in First Class and would like to mine more in this one."

Although details about the film are being kept under wraps, Kinberg acknowledged that the film will mark the end of an arc for the main characters in the franchise.

"This movie is the completion of the first arcs of Charles, Eric, Raven, and Hank, who are essentially our main characters," he said.

"They're such young actors and young characters, so there's a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie."

X-Men: Apocalypse is expected to be released in May 2016.

CBS lands Bryan Cranston's Sneaky Pete pilot

CBS has picked up the pilot for Bryan Cranston's criminal drama, Sneaky Pete.

The show has been co-written by the former Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the Middle star and House creator David Shore who will both serve as executive producers.

The series will follow a con man in his 30's, who assumes the identity of an old cellmate when he is released from jail.

He uses the new identity to hide from debtors by working for his new family's bail bond business.

There, he will use his new job and alias to take down worse criminals than himself, teaming up with his pretty 'cousin' who grows suspicious of his motives.

Meanwhile, Cranston's latest film project, Kung Fu Panda 3, has recently been pushed back to March 18, 2016 to avoid a clash with the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens.

Val Kilmer recovering after throat surgery

Val Kilmer is reported to be recovering in hospital after throat surgery to remove a suspected tumour.

According to TMZ, the actor – who played the Dark Knight in Batman Forever - was taken to UCLA Medical Centre in Santa Monica for treatment earlier this week.

The 55-year-old sought medical attention after apparently bleeding from the throat last Monday, January 26.

It's not clear if the condition is linked to a problem he suffered with last year, when he told a small claims court judge he was unable to speak because his tongue was swollen, during a dispute with his former landlord.

Kilmer was last spotted in public with his son Jack on January 16 at a Los Angeles Clippers' basketball game.
