Irish go Wilde at Oscar party

Seven Psychopaths star Colin Farrell was joined by a host of celebrities at the eighth annual Oscar Wilde: Honouring the Irish in Film party last night.

The special event, which acclaimed director Steven Spielberg claims is "one of the best parties in LA," took place at Lost producer JJ Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, in Santa Monica, California.

Farrell, who won a Golden Globe award for his role in In Bruges in 2009, was just one of the A-list stars in attendance at the glitzy event.

Speaking to The John Murray Show about the event, Farrell said: "It's great craic. The event seems to lack a sense of pretence that a lot of these things have and it seems to be fairly loose."

When asked if he had any advice for 26-year-old Kerry girl Fodhla Cronin O'Reilly, who has been nominated for an Academy Award in the short animated film category, the father-of-two added: "I think as soon as you start getting tips and advice, you run the risk of losing the potential for it to be as raw and as pure of an experience as it can be.

"When I went to the Oscars for the first time I was gobsmacked and I mean I've been three times. It's huge, it's ridiculous and it's pompous and equally it's exciting and awe-inspiring. It means nothing and it means loads. Look she's there because she did something really good and notable. She got people's attention through her artistic ability and creative acumen. I hope she has a great night and really enjoys it."

The 36-year-old star was also joined by his former co-star Christopher Walken, director Jim Sheridan, two time Oscar-winning make-up artist Michele Burke, Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns, singer/songwriter Declan O'Rourke, award-winning composer Julie Feeney, Fair City actor Alan O'Neill, Terra Nova actor Jason O'Mara and Pulp Fiction star Bronagh Gallagher.

DeVito’s looking for next Saoirse Ronan

Danny DeVito, who is currently in Dublin, is looking for an actress to play the lead role in a film he's shooting in Ireland next year.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, deVito spoke about the film, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, which is based on a book by American author Avi: "This is a really good book. It's a very radical book and it's about a thirteen-year-old girl who takes charge, so that's what I like.

"I've got two daughters and I always tell them... you can do anything you want, just go after it, if you really want it."

However he is still looking for his leading lady: "I gotta find Charlotte Doyle, so we gotta look for her.

"Saoirse [Ronan] was gonna do it a few years ago but now she's a young woman and I need a thirteen-year-old girl. Help!"

DeVito will attend the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival in Dublin tonight, where he will be presented with a Volta award for his contribution to film.

The Hardy Bucks Movie – RTÉ TEN's review

The Hardy Bucks make their big screen debut in cinemas from today, Thursday February 21. RTÉ TEN's John Byrne hops in the camper van for their Euro caper.

The most remarkable thing about The Hardy Bucks Movie is that it cost a mere €300,000 to produce. That wouldn't cover the sandwich bill for your typical Hollywood blockbuster or even the daily running costs of a decent Tinseltown litigation lawyer, but it does betray the roots of what's been one of Irish entertainment's most endearing success stories.

Coming from the most modest of backgrounds - Hardy Bucks started out as a bunch of mates mucking around on YouTube; that went down a storm and led to the lads developing a series initially for RTÉ web project Storyline, then RTÉ Two and becoming stars - those behind it know how to make the most of a few bob, and they came up with the ideal pitch for their first foray into the film world: send the lads to the Euros.

Last summer, it seemed as though half the male population of Ireland was heading to Poland to see the Republic of Ireland play in what was only their second appearance in the finals of the toughest international football competition on the planet.

Last time around it was Euro 88, Stuttgart, Ray Houghton and all of that. The results weren't as good this time around, but the drinking was just as massive - which seems to be the only sport that matters to most Irishmen.

As for the HBs, Euro 2012 meant a road trip that saw them (initially in two groups as the Viper got himself sorted with tickets and left the others at home) hit Amsterdam along the way and get into terrible trouble. Even more trouble followed when they reached Poland, but sure there's no point in ruining the story, which is all about the journey and the jar.

The Hardy Bucks' strong point is the array of characters that form this group of misfits; they're like any bunch of lads in any town in Ireland who think they're great craic altogether when they're really clueless clowns.

And although bringing a cast of characters on the road is the classic mistake made when a TV show gets a film (it was a staple of awful UK sitcoms-turned-movies for decades), it made perfect sense here given that the Euros came along just at the right time. It also meant that, when they got to Poland, there would be thousands of free extras on hand if required.

Considering the time and financial restrictions, it's an impressive piece of cinema (I'll damn it with faint praise and say it's better than The Hangover), and the only point where it fails is with the script, which barely raised more than a few smiles for me. Sure, there's plenty of man-boy messing about, but it's not enough to sustain a feature-length film.

I've been a bloke for a long time and most of my mates are in the same boat - I know what we're like when we get together and there are no women about. We're such eejits, really. On that level, The Hardy Bucks are no different to The Inbetweeners or the guys in The Hangover movies. And The Hardy Bucks Movie works just fine, as far as it goes.

Loads of people will love this - the Irish never tire of admiring themselves - but it's a bit of fun rather than actually funny.

Emmerdale's Charity on baby secret plot

Emmerdale star Emma Atkins has revealed that Jai Sharma's baby secret is likely to remain in the dark for some time. Warning: Spoiler Alert!

The 37-year-old actress, who plays the part of Charity on the popular soap, explained that her character still has no idea that husband Jai (Chris Bisson) is the father of Rachel Breckle's baby son Archie.

Speaking to This Morning, Atkins said: "The fact that it's all been going on under her nose without her knowing will be the biggest shock. Charity's one of those people. if there's digging to do or detective work, she'll do it really well, because she's quite conniving in that way.

"But the fact that he's been leading this double life under her nose is going to have a huge impact on her, I think."

Asked when fans can expect the big reveal, Atkins added: "Well, the storyliners, I think they're going to keep it going for a while. It's quite interesting for the audience to see someone having two lives."

In tonight's hour-long episode of Emmerdale, Charity and Home Farm business man Declan Macey (Jason Merrells) engage in a romantic fling.

Atkins added: "It's a weird circle, because you've got two marriages which are both going wrong in their own dysfunctional ways. Then you've got two people within either marriage coming together in a frisson. It's very odd.

"In real life, it would be the most disgusting set-up. But it's the most wonderful thing to play, because you're experimenting with the way you'd feel in that particular situation. For Charity, she's done it before, hasn't she? Many times!

"She also has history with Declan, which is why I think the audience will really like it - because it's Jai's best friend."

Emmerdale airs tonight at 6.45pm on UTV and 7pm on TV3.

Spice Girls musical extended until 2014

The Spice Girls musical Viva Forever! has been extended until at least February 2014.

The Jennifer Saunders-penned show looks set to showcase even more performances up to Saturday, February 15, 2014, according to Digital Spy.

The musical features Hannah John-Kameniva and Eurovision star Sally Ann Triplett and centres around a girl called Viva who gets caught up in a TV talent show which turns her life upside down.

Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders recently hit back at critics who slammed the Spice Girls musical Viva Forever!.

When asked what she made about the poor reviews of the show, 54-year-old, Saunders told the London Evening Standard: "So the critics - five middle-aged men - didn't like it. If you send your dad to see Viva Forever! on his own, then of course he's going to hate it. It was no surprise."

The show's producer, Judy Craymer, also defended the musical, saying: "We want to get it out to Broadway - that's the plan. There are talks in progress. Japan and Asia also want it.

"We just want to make sure we have the product right in London first. The critics were always going to give us a hard time, but the truth is it's sold out until June. Feedback from audiences has been amazing. Spice Girls fans are loving every minute."

She added: "Yes, it's been hard - but just like any show is hard to start from scratch and launch on the West End."
