Neeson named Irish Man of the Year in NY

Ballymena-born actor Liam Neeson was named the Irish Man of the Year in New York City yesterday (March 18).

The 60-year-old Taken star was given a standing ovation at New York City Hall as he received the Thomas Manton Irish Man of the Year Award.

As he stepped up to the podium to accept his award, Neeson said: "There's a popular assumption that actors are very good public speakers. It's absolute B.S. It's actually my worst nightmare."

He added: "I'm delighted and thrilled to be here . . . Let me say what an honour it is to accept this Irish Man Of The Year Award. I'm humbled to join a distinguished group of past Manton award recipients, (including U.S.) Senators Ted Kennedy and George Mitchell.

"Tonight is a great example of the Irish-American tradition for commitment to public service, the Irish-American commitment to community and helping others. I'm truly humbled, so thank you."

The event, which is held annually in conjunction with Irish-American Heritage Month, also featured a performance by the cast of Broadway musical Once.

Matt Smith keen on being a Bond villain

Doctor Who star Matt Smith doesn't think he's cute enough to play James Bond but he reckons he would make a good Bond villian.

"I'm not handsome enough to be James Bond. Maybe a villain though. Start campaigning now. I don't think I could be James Bond though." says Smith, who returns as The Doctor on March 30 on BBC One in an episode called The Bells of Saint John.

Speaking to The Sun, the 30-year-old actor added, "I'd edge on the camp dangerous side I think. Javier Bardem was amazing. I thought Skyfall was a sumptuous film."

Smith called the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who "a modern-day conspiracy thriller [that's] like Doctor Who meets Bourne meets Bond".

Hugh Laurie set to release second album

Hugh Laurie will release a follow up to his debut album Let Them Talk this May.

On Didn't it Rain, the former House star celebrates classic material from the world of blues with songs dating back to early pioneers W.C. Handy (St Louis. Blues) and Jelly Roll Morton (I Hate A Man Like You) to more recent artists such as Dr. John (Wild Honey) and Alan Price of The Animals (Changes).

"I have resolved to forge on, deeper into the forest of American music that has enchanted me since I was a small boy," says Laurie. "And the further I go, the more bewitched I become - both by the songs and by the people I have been lucky enough to play them with."

Again produced by Joe Henry, Didn't It Rain was recorded at Ocean Way Studio in Los Angeles in January of this year and includes guest star, blues artist Taj Mahal.

Delamere in for Murray on Radio 1

Written By Unknown on Senin, 18 Maret 2013 | 23.37

Neil Delamere will be the guest host on The John Murray Show on RTÉ Radio 1 from Tuesday to Friday (9:00am-10:00am) this week, and has been telling RTÉ TEN what listeners can expect.

"The show is great fun to do because it's so eclectic," said the comic and broadcaster. "One day I could be talking to an anthropologist and the next day it could be one of the Coronas. Not only does that not happen on other shows, but if it did you wouldn't have the same time to spend chatting to them."

Asked about this week's guests, Delamere replied: "We'll be chatting to a storyteller who will fill us in on the burgeoning tale-spinning scene in Ireland.

"Stories have always fascinated me: simply put, they're the oldest form of entertainment. I've seen many a comedian handle them wonderfully deftly, so I'm delighted to get a chance to explore the area further. I want to see how much crossover there is between straight yarn-spinning and stand up.

"On a more mundane level, I really want to know the rules! Who is allowed to tell what story? Is a person censured for telling someone else's story? What's the process for inventing or even embellishing a story?"

Delamere continued: "I also can't wait to probe the mind of a clinical psychologist about "pseudo facts" - facts that we accept as being real because there seems to be an air of scientific proof, but prove to be false when you investigate further.

"We all like to think of ourselves as rational creatures but misinformation and myth seem to invade our thoughts with relative ease.

"If the brilliant BBC show QI has taught me anything, it is that everything I thought I knew is incorrect. I'm looking forward to an expert telling me I'm wrong on even more things."

James Nesbitt's Ireland, ITV, 8.00pm

A couple of years ago, bluff old cove Terry Wogan did a jaunt around Ireland for a TV series and now it's the turn of another Irishman, actor James Nesbitt to flog the old sod to the Brits. In this new eight-part series, the personable Nesbitt brings his own perspective on bear on our beautiful (looking) country. He visits the Giant's Causeway, the Cliffs of Moher, as well as less well-known places of interest including the traditional seaweed baths at Strandhill. In episode one, James heads down to the South West of Ireland. He says: "Miles of white sand and crystal clear waters. This stretch of coast was once cited as the most beautiful place on earth by National Geographic. The water might be a bit chilly, the sun may not always be shining, but the warmth of the Irish people will give you just as good a time."

The Challenger, BBC Two, 9.00pm

This new BBC factual drama stars William Hurt as American physicist Richard Feynman, the man determined to reveal the truth behind the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster. When Challenger exploded 73 seconds into its flight on the morning of January 28 1986, it represented one of the most shocking events in the history of American spaceflight. A Presidential Commission was immediately convened to explore what had gone wrong, but with the vast complexity of the space shuttle and so many vested interests involved in the investigation, discovering the truth was an almost impossible challenge. A truly independent member of the investigation was Richard Feynman. One of the most accomplished scientists of his generation, he had worked on the Manhattan Project to build the first atom bomb and won a Nobel Prize for his breakthroughs in quantum physics. Feynman deployed exceptional integrity, charm and relentless scientific logic to investigate the secrets of the shuttle disaster and, in doing so, helped make the US space programme safer.
