Life's a Breeze - RTÉ TEN review

The new Irish film Life's a Breeze opens in cinemas tomorrow, Friday July 19. Sarah McIntyre gives her verdict.

The new Irish film Life's a Breeze opens in cinemas tomorrow, Friday July 19. Sarah McIntyre gives her verdict.

Lance Daly's pleasant comedy-drama Life's a Breeze centres on a squabbling family on the hunt for their mother's lost fortune.

It is carried by two powerful performances from acting legend Fionnula Flanagan and outstanding newcomer Kelly Thornton, who makes her debut after being spotted on the street by the film's casting director.

She plays 13-year-old schoolgirl Emma, who is bribed by her layabout uncle Colm (Pat Shortt) to take her Nan (Flanagan) out for the day so he and his siblings can give her cluttered Georgian home a much-needed overhaul.

You can't help but think that their intentions are slightly less than altruistic, and are probably based on a long-term goal to sell the property and divide the earnings - something Nan is aware of.

Predictably, their interference is unwelcome, and they are taken aback when Nan calmly informs them that her mattress contained her life savings of close to a million euro. Their initial scepticism turns quickly to panic as they brainstorm ways to track down the lost fortune.

Visits to recycling centres and landfills only serve to confirm the 'needle in a haystack' situation, while Colm makes matters worse by announcing on a radio show that the cash has gone missing.

An army of money-hungry opportunists are soon knee-high in waste, hoping to come across Nan's nest egg and leaving the family's chances close to zero. However, when the mattress is discovered, it contains a paltry €670, leading to suggestions that Nan is suffering from senility and discussions about putting her in a home.

This is an enjoyable, well-told story that shines a light on the relationships family members have with one another, particularly regarding finances and inheritance. Thornton puts in a subtle and considered performance as a schoolgirl who is wise beyond her years, and the scenes she shares with Flanagan are a delight to behold.

3.5/5

Michael Bublé will not sing at your wedding!

Michael Bublé has revealed that even if you are a well known celebrity, it is unlikely he will sing at your wedding.

Michael Bublé has revealed that even if you are a well known celebrity, it is unlikely he will sing at your wedding.

In jovial form ahead of one of his gigs at the O2 this week (he's the first artist to play five nights at the venue), Michael Bublé told RTÉ Ten that he is constantly asked to sing at weddings.

He said: "I am asked every day, every single day. People know how successful I am, but they don't give a s**t, they don't.

"The best part is, is that people are so cute about it, they will literally look at you and they will be so sincere and say, 'Listen, my daughter is getting married in August and if you could come, honestly your whole band, they will eat and drink for free.'

"And I'm like, 'OK I'll be there,' but of course, I will never be there!"

He added: "Even now, friends that have weddings, even if they are celebrities and they ask me to sing I say, 'No, just invite me and let me be a guest,' and then of course I am hammered two-hours in and they can't stop from singing, so basically just get me hammered and I will come to your wedding."

Friends, family and colleagues joined the 57-year-old yesterday (July16th) at the ceremony outside the Redbury Hotel on Vine Street in Hollywood.

Breaking Bad's RJ Mitte, Anna Gunn, and Aaron Paul were joined by Cranston's former Malcolm in the Middle cast-mates, Frankie Muniz and Jane Kaczmarek, to cheer on the actor alongside his wife Robin Dearden and their daughter, Taylor Dearden Cranston.

Aaron Paul spoke at the event and said: "Breaking Bad would not be the same without this man. Let's be honest, television would not be the same without this man. But I'm here to tell you all that I, personally, would not be the same without this man."

Jane Kaczmarek revealed that Cranston used to serenade the Malcom in the Middle cast to help raise their spirits at the end of a long day.

"We would count our lucky stars that Bryan Cranston was in our cast, that he was in our show, that Bryan Cranston was our friend." she said.

Cranston, who was in high spirits at the ceremony, sang a verse from the song On the Street Where You Live during his speech and then hit the pavement to do some press-ups.
