Brown says EastEnders classic "easiest thing"

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 16 November 2013 | 23.38

EastEnders star June Brown has said that her seminal, critically acclaimed performance in the monologue episode starring her character Dot was "the easiest thing" she has ever done.

Brown was shortlisted for a 2009 BAFTA for her performance in the 2008 episode, Pretty Baby, which saw Dot recording a message for on-screen husband Jim (John Bardon) as he recovered from a stroke in hospital.

It was the first time a female soap star had been nominated for a BAFTA Best Actress award since Coronation Street's Jean Alexander (Hilda Ogden) two decades previously.

In an interview with Ryan Tubridy on Friday night's Late Late Show, Brown said of her performance in the episode: "I didn't do [say] it at the time because I thought it sounded conceited... it was the easiest thing I ever had to do in all my life!"

Brown continued: "I'll tell you why: A) I knew the character backwards; I knew exactly how she'd behave and what she'd feel and I'd known her history. So you're not struggling to find all those things – you've got it there.

"And the other thing is – I won't swear, I won't say anything rude – nobody mucked you up!"

She then explained: "You see, there was nobody [co-star] to give you the wrong note or to take too long a pause or not come in [respond] fast enough so that you couldn't take off from what they said.

"You did it yourself. So, and actually, it's a dreadful thing to say, but I found it very, very, very easy. I enjoyed it enormously, we did it very fast."

Asked about missing out on the BAFTA, Brown replied: "You never do [win] if you're in a soap... It's true! Jean Alexander, you know, who played Hilda Ogden, she was nominated. [It was a] Lovely performance, wonderful performance her Hilda Ogden – she didn't get it."

When asked by Tubridy whether she felt she deserved to win, Brown replied: "I would've liked it, yes. I would've felt it had crowned my acting in a way, made it sound worthwhile, I think. So I didn't care that I didn't get nominated for any other awards that time!

"It all depends where it [performance] comes [in a year]: if you have a good performance at a certain time, it's too far back and people have forgotten. So the ones that come nearer [the awards], they'd get more chance. But no, I would've liked to have got it, that is true."

Brown's autobiography, Before the Year Dot, is out now.

Room to Improve back on RTÉ One on Sunday

The new series of Room to Improve begins on RTÉ One this Sunday night, November 17, at 9:30pm.

In episode one, architect Dermot Bannon and quantity surveyor Patricia Power are helping Catherine Bennett and her youngest daughter Sarah Jane who want to downsize from their large house in Mullingar to a three-bed bungalow which has been uninhabited for the last nine years.

The makers of the show say: "Given the very different and quite specific needs of mother and daughter, Dermot suggests demolishing the old place to make way for an all-new build.

"With a totally cleared site to work with, Dermot gets a rare opportunity to design from the ground-up, but it quickly becomes apparent that this build will be even more challenging than usual."

Other challenges in the weeks ahead include: "a self-build project undertaken in Clane by homeowners back from the UK; the audacious extension of an old cottage in Westport, Co Mayo and an exciting new extension for a young couple in Stillorgan".

Film Review: The Butler

The all-star White House drama The Butler is now in cinemas. Laura Delaney pays a visit to Pennsylvania Avenue.

Directed by Lee Daniels (Precious, The Paperboy), The Butler is a historical drama loosely based on the real-life story of Eugene Allen, a long-serving African-American White House butler. Forest Whitaker stars as Cecil Gaines, a former cotton plantation worker in the Deep South whose life is transformed when a sympathetic matriarch, Annabeth Westfall (Redgrave), trains him as a house servant.

Following a brief stint at an upmarket hotel, Cecil subsequently finds himself working for American presidents over three decades, including Eisenhower (Robin Williams), JFK (James Marsden), Lyndon B Johnson (Liev Schreiber), Nixon (John Cusack) and Reagan (Alan Rickman - Jane Fonda plays wife Nancy).

Meanwhile, Cecil finds it hard to maintain a healthy relationship with his wilful son, Louis (David Oyelowo), who joins the Freedom Riders and, ultimately, the Black Panthers.

In a separate subplot, Cecil's commitment to work takes its toll on his resentful and lonely wife Gloria (Oprah Winfrey) who struggles with alcoholism and infidelity.

Whitaker delivers a likeable and dignified performance, which will no doubt see him in contention for Best Actor at the Oscars. Oprah's superb supporting role should also see her being shortlisted for an Academy Award. She keeps the movie dramatically vibrant, while engaging with the audience every step of the way. Her return after a 15-year absence from the silver screen was definitely worth the wait.

Cuba Gooding Jr and Lenny Kravitz give fine performances as Cecil's co-workers at the White House, while Terrence Howard sparks interest as a numbers-runner and layabout neighbour. However, the various cameos throughout the film feel distracting and, at times, comical, most notably Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan and a make-up-free Mariah Carey.

The script provides a powerful insight into racial politics with heart-rending sequences, in particular Cecil's reaction when Barack Obama wins the 2008 election. However, the whistle-stop depiction of the decades - spanning from the 1950s to the present day - makes it difficult to separate the different themes running through the film. For the most part, Daniels' sprawling approach to storytelling feels like a crash-course in US political history.

It may be over-ambitious and lack some polish, but The Butler still has just enough heart to get my vote.

Downton star promises big Christmas

Dublin actor Allen Leech has confirmed that he will feature in the upcoming Downton Abbey Christmas special, while insisting that the series' creator, Julian Fellowes, has "gone all out" with this year's festive show.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, the 32-year-old Killiney-man, who plays Tom Branson in the period drama, said: "Tom is definitely in the Downton Christmas special. It's going to be really exciting. There are some major, big, big, big set pieces."

Leech continued: "Julian Fellowes has gone all out with what he's written. There's a major centrepiece for one of the characters and a big event. Paul Giamatti also joins us which will be fun."

He added: "There is also the start of a couple of love interests for people."

Speaking about the direction he would like to take his character in, Leech said: "I would like to see his political side come back. I think that kind of took a backseat because of all the terrible things that happened to him in his life.

"Now that he's kind of settled himself, I'd like to see that political element come back. I'd also like him to see more of Ireland."

Leech can currently be seen in the psychological thriller In Fear, which centres on a young couple who get more than they bargain for while travelling to a music festival.

When asked what attracted him to the script, Leech said: "It's a crazy story. What really attracted me to the film was the process in which the director [Jeremy Lovering] wanted to go about to make the film. He wanted the two leads to know very little and wanted me to play mind games with them."

He added: "As an actor it's a real challenge because a lot of it was improvised. It was very exciting to have the opportunity to manipulate people's perceptions and trust."

In Fear is in cinemas now. Read the RTÉ TEN review at: www.rte.ie/ten/reviews/movies/2013/1114/485931-in-fear/.

Leech was a guest on Friday's Late Late Show. Watch it at: www.rte.ie/player/ie/show/10223286.

Lily Allen admits to comeback nerves

Lily Allen has confessed that she struggled to sleep in the weeks building up to her comeback.

The 28-year-old said that she suffered weeks of sleepless nights ahead of releasing Hard Out Here, her first recording since 2009, and admits that she feared a backlash to the song's message of gender injustices in the music industry.

"It's been an exciting 24 hours, that's for sure," she told London's Evening Standard. "I'm a bit of a catastrophiser. I haven't really slept much in the last couple of weeks, thinking about the negative feedback I was going to get."

Allen also said that she has been "genuinely quite moved" by the positive response to the song: "I think objectification of women is fine if I feel that there is a sense of ownership from the woman."

"If it comes from somewhere else and it feels like the woman is being coerced or forced into something then it's gross."

Discussing coming out of retirement after her 2009 album It's Not Me, It's You, she admitted: "I felt like I had to connect with myself again.

"I knew that I needed to get out of the house and do some work, and when confronted with that I thought about what it was that I was able to do, and writing songs is pretty much it."

Hard Out Here is released this Sunday (November 17).

Harrelson would like a big screen Cheers reunion

Woody Harrelson has revealed that he thinks a Cheers reunion for the big screen would be a lot of fun.

The star played a dim-witted barman on the show from 1985 to 1993 and would like to get the old group back together before they get too old, though he didn't say it was likely to actually happen.

Speaking to the Daily Express newspaper, The Hunger Games star said, "It's something I get asked about now and again. A lot of people have fond memories of that show and it is still huge around the world.

"It might be fun to get us all back together before we all get too old. Maybe it could be Cheers: The Movie."
