TEN's TV highlights for Friday

Telly review show Gogglebox (9.00pm, Channel 4) is back, there's a live episode of EastEnders (7.30pm, RTÉ One/BBC One), while Bear Grylls: Mission Survive (9.00pm, UTV) brings eight celebs on a rainforest adventure

Gogglebox, 9.00pm, Channel 4

One of the most enjoyable shows in recent years, Gogglebox returns for a new run and the return of many familiar couch potatoes. Often hilariously opinionated TV viewers never short of a word or 12, they share their sharp, insightful, passionate and sometimes emotional critiques of the week's biggest and best shows. Who knew that watching other people watching telly could be so much fun?

EastEnders, 7.30pm, RTÉ One/BBC One

Now this is pretty much unmissable. The culmination of the UK soap's 30th anniversary comes in the shape of this live episode, which should add more than a little electricity to what will be a very exciting evening on Albert Square. With the truth about Lucy's killer now out, certain residents must face the brutal truth about her death. And as other secrets and revelations come to light, will things ever be the same for the residents of Albert Square?

Bear Grylls: Mission Survive, 9.00pm, UTV

Dubliner Vogue Williams is among the eight celebrities who face a 12-day survival mission unlike anything they've ever experienced before. To stay alive they must learn to navigate difficult terrain, build shelter, make fire and eat food that nature provides. And it all takes place in a rainforest in Costa Rica, no less. From abseiling down ferocious waterfalls, crossing perilous rapids, trudging through swamps and eating rats and scorpions; this promises to be quite an epic adventure for all involved.

Watch: Sesame Street's Big Bird in Birdman parody

It kind of had to happen - Sesame Street's Big Bird has made a parody of Michael Keaton's comeback movie, Birdman.

The Watercooler and Sesame Street joined forces to create Big Birdman.

The parody features the incomparable Caroll Spinney, the man who has been playing Big Bird on Sesame Street for over 45 years.

Best line? 'How did we get here? How did we get to Sesame Street?'

Here it is in all its yellow-feathered glory:

A long way from Central Perk

After a decade going global as Rachel in Friends, another decade starring in rom-coms of varying irritability, which adds to 20 years a-tabloiding, she also wants to be taken seriously as an actor.

And, despite an occasionally manipulative script, she pretty much pulls it off in this entertaining look at a damaged woman suffering physical and mental scars in the wake of a family tragedy.

Claire Bennett is an LA divorcee hooked on painkillers and pretty angry with the world . . .

Chalk-and-cheese guys

Despite the best efforts of its two likeable leading men, Kevin Hart and Josh Gad, The Wedding Ringer disappoints by failing to deliver any genuine laugh-out-loud moments.

Director and co-writer Jeremy Garelick has brought us a fairly predictable bromance about two chalk-and-cheese guys who are brought together under extreme circumstances and are forced to pull off the stunt of a lifetime . . .

Blackhat

2.5 stars

Director: Michael Mann

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Wei Tang

Duration: 133 minutes

An escalating situation

Blackhat looked like a definite couple of hours of fun, but it turned out to be quite disappointing.

For starters, it's directed by Michael Mann, who has been behind films such as Last of the MohicansHeatCollateral and Ali, and is widely regarded as one of the greats of modern Hollywood.

The cast is pretty impressive too: Viola Davis (The HelpHow to Get Away with Murder) gives weight to any role, while Chris Hemsworth is both a fine actor - as he showed in Ron Howard's Rush - and a bankable bulk, thanks to his ongoing gig as Norse God Thor in a relentless range of Marvel movies . . .

Love is Strange

****

Director: Ira Sachs

Starring: John Lithgow, Alfred Molina, Marisa Tomei, Darren Burrows, Charlie Tahan

Duration: 94 minutes

Alfred Molina and John Lithgow

Don't approach this movie thinking that The Everly Brothers' classic, Love Is Strange, is going to run through it like a theme song. For it is not that type of movie at all, being dependent on Chopin and painting and bourgeoisie stuff.

Yet the love of the title - strange, or otherwise - underpins this charming, thoughtful movie as a subtly diffuse theme. Seventy-one-year-old Ben (John Lithgow) and the younger George (Alfred Molina) have been an item for 39 years . . .

Jupiter Ascending

2 stars
Director: Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski

Starring: Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Eddie Redmayne, Booth, James D'Arcy, Sean Bean, Tuppence Middleton, Maria Doyle Kennedy

Duration: 127 minutes

There's no chemistry between Tatum and Kunis in this whizzbang sci-fi

The Wachowskis return with a galactic epic that is overly in debt to better, smarter movies like Dune and The Fifth ElementSoylent Green may even get a nod but this is one space opera that makes Battlefield Earth look like Solaris.

From The Matrix to Cloud Atlas, Andy and Lana W have displayed a talent for real high wire verve and inventiveness but it's easy to see why Jupiter Ascending's release was delayed for nine months and why a post-production overhaul was also required - all of it is very visible in nearly every single scene in the two-hour running time.

It sure looks glossy and epic . . .

The Interview

Duration: 112 minutes

C'mon! Nobody said it was going to be Duck Soup!

There were plenty of raised eyebrows and maybe even some sniggering late last year when hackers broke into Sony's computer system and leaked numerous yet to be released movies and some pretty sensitive e-mails. The real thoughts of corporate paymasters about `the talent' made very interesting reading.

But the story surrounding The Interview soon turned very sinister indeed when terrorists, putatively originating from North Korea itself, threatened attacks on cinemas screening the movie . . .

Blur announce new album - The Magic Whip

Blur have confirmed an April release for The Magic Whip, their first album since 2003's Think Tank

The band announced details of the new album at a press conference in a Chinese restaurant in London which was webcast on their Facebook page earlier today.

"Finally, we can confirm that we will be releasing an album, The Magic Whip on April 27th, our first as a four-piece in 16 years!" says a post on the band's Facebook page.

The recordings began during a five-day break in touring in Spring 2013 at Avon Studios in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The tapes were put aside when the group finished touring and returned to their respective lives.

Last November, guitarist Graham Coxon revisited the tracks and, drafting in blur's early producer Stephen Street, he worked with the band on the material. Frontman Damon Albarn then added lyrics.

The tracklisting for The Magic Whip is: Lonesome Street, New World Towers, Go Out, Ice Cream Man, Thought I Was a Spaceman, I Broadcast, My Terracotta Heart, There are Too Many of Us, Ghost Ship, Pyongyang, Ong Ong, Mirrorball.

Blur will also play the British Summer Time gig in Hyde Park on June 20, their fourth headline show at the London venue.

Watch! Circus madness on Don't Tell The Bride

Don't Tell The Bride is back on RTÉ2 tonight with a brand new run as six more blushing - and very brave - brides leave the biggest day of their lives in the hands of the men they love.

The groom gets €10,000 and three weeks and the bride gets NO say in how it's spent. It's all tears, tantrums and total meltdowns.

In tonight's opener, born entertainer Richie wants his wedding to be the Greatest Show on Earth so he's going all out with a circus theme wedding in a field. He wants to organise a tent complete with fire eaters, lion tamers, tight rope walkers - the lot!

Speaking to TEN about tonight's show Richie revealed that he is "nervous" about what his other half will make of his pre-wedding shenanigans.

He said, "I am nervous about tonight as Amanda doesn't know what happened over the three weeks. I'm interested to see what she thinks of it all."

When asked about picking a circus-themed wedding, he added: "I applied for the show without Amanda knowing. I didn't realise that you needed to pick a theme. When the researcher rang me to say that I was through to the next round, I wasn't sure what to say. So, I just googled 'themed weddings' and came up with circus. I thought it was going to be easy to do, but it turned out to be more challenging than expected."

Doesn't Richie look radiant in the pic above? So how on earth did he end up sporting a wedding dress?

"I decided to pick the best dress in the shop and figured if it looks good on me, it will look even better on Amanda," he said.

Don't Tell The Bride is on tonight at 9.00pm on RTÉ2.

Below is a sneak peek at some of the antics Richie gets up to over the three weeks:
