Sherlock dominates Crime Thriller Awards

The BBC's Sherlock series was the big winner at the Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards after taking home three awards. Irish writer Gene Kerrigan was also honoured.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes in the series, was named Best Actor, while Martin Freeman won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Holmes's sidekick Dr Watson.

The BBC programme, which has won three Baftas to date, was also awarded the TV Dagger for best television series.

Sherlock, based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character, was launched by the BBC in 2010.

A third series is scheduled to be filmed early next year.

Other winners at the Crime Thriller Awards included Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, which won the Film award, Danish crime drama The Bridge, which was named best international television series, and Irish writer Gene Kerrigan, who won in the best thriller book category with The Rage.

Claire Danes was named Best Actress for her role in Homeland, while Kelly Macdonald won Best Supporting Actress for Boardwalk Empire.
