The BBC's annual telethon Children in Need has set a new record for funds raised, with almost £27m donated during the seven-hour live show on Friday night.

Commenting on the £26,757,446 raised, Children in Need Chair Stevie Spring told BBC Breakfast: "I'm surprised and absolutely thrilled, I couldn't be more thrilled".

"Last year we had yet another tough year and we pulled out all the stops and we're up 40%, over 40% this time last year".

"And last night we absolutely smashed that total again. I think it was absolutely amazing."

The Terry Wogan, Tess Daly and Fearne Cotton-hosted extravaganza included performances by One Direction, Kylie Minogue, Girls Aloud, Leona Lewis and Ellie Goulding; a Doctor Who Christmas Special prequel with the Doctor's new companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman; a Strictly Come Dancing special and an appearance by Alan Sugar in a special edition of EastEnders.
