Broadcaster and astronomer Patrick Moore has died at the age of 89.

Moore, who has hosted the BBC's The Sky At Night since it began in 1957, "passed away peacefully" at his home in West Sussex on Sunday (December 9), his friends and family said in a statement.

The statement added: "After a short spell in hospital last week, it was determined that no further treatment would benefit him, and it was his wish to spend his last days in his own home, Farthings, where he today passed on, in the company of close friends and carers and his cat Ptolemy."

Moore became the longest-running host of the same television show ever after presenting the BBC programme The Sky At Night for over 50 years.

He also hosted the Channel 4 show GamesMaster, the first UK TV series dedicated to computer and video games, from 1992 to 1998.

Moore also wrote many books on astronomy as well as works of fiction.

He was appointed an OBE in 1968, a CBE in 1988 and was honoured with a knighthood in 2012 for "services to the popularisation of science and to broadcasting".

He remained unmarried and had no children.
