Dublin Zoo welcomes two new arrivals

Dublin Zoo is delighted to welcome two young snowy owls to the Fringes of the Arctic, just in time for Christmas. The sibling birds, who came from Linton Zoo in the UK, are less than 12 months old so it is still too early to tell whether they are male or female.

Speaking about the new arrivals team leader Eddie O'Brien, said: "We are thrilled with the arrival of the snowy owls. When we confirm the gender of the sibling chicks we will introduce suitable partners for them in the hope they will mate and breed.

"They are settling in very well and are accustomed to our cold weather. The owls actually love this time of year."

Here are a few facts about Snowy Owls:

The adult male snowy owl is characterised by a fully white plumage while females and young birds are recognised by their speckled coat.

As young snowy owls mature into adulthood their gender can be identified by the colour of their plumage.

All snowy owls have yellow eyes and black beaks.

They have a gentle nature with excellent eyesight and a keen sense of hearing.

They perch on the ground or on short posts and at this time of year spend most of the day hunting and feeding.

Dublin Zoo is open seven days a week from 9.30am to 4pm in December. Every Saturday and Sunday in December and every day from Thursday 20th - Monday 24th December Santa's Grotto proudly sponsored by Deep RiverRock will be open from 10am - 4pm.
