At the age of 65, Schwarzenegger will soon be seen on Irish cinema screens in The Last Stand, in which he plays the sheriff of a quiet American town on the Mexican border.
America is relatively accustomed to actors who become politicians - Ronald Reagan and Fred Thompson to name two - but the notion of an actor going back to motion pictures after politics is something of a first. And that is just what the former governor of the state with the seventh largest economy in the world has done.
Arnie now has to deal with a ruthless fugitive who terrorises a peace-loving community, as he tries to cross the frontier into freedom from Mexico. Arnie puts a stop to his gallop with his usual merciless and summary tactics.
The Last Stand is the first English language film from director Korean Kim Jee-woon. And Arnie is not just taking a temporary detour back into movies. "I would like to work with Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, " the actor recently told a press conference. "Also Sam Raimi would be great to work with."
"No disrespect to gentlemen of a certain age, but I think he is a little silly in that kind of movie, " says Noah Levy, senior news editor at In Touch Weekly magazine. "What I think people would want to see him in is a comedy. He has great comedic timing and there is something oddly lovable about him."
