Day-Lewis nominated for Best Actor

The nominations for the 85th annual Academy Awards have been announced, with Lincoln leading the pack with 12 nods.

Ang Lee's Life of Pi followed closely behind with 11 nominations, while David O Russell's romantic comedy Silver Linings Playbook earned nominations in eight categories.

Daniel Day-Lewis has been nominated in the Best Actor category for his performance in Lincoln. He will battle it out with Joaquin Phoenix (The Master), Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables) and Denzel Washington (Flight).

This year's Best Actress nominees are: Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) and Naomi Watts (The Impossible).

Lincoln is nominated in the Best Picture category alongside Life of Pi, musical Les Misérables, Iran hostage drama Argo, French drama Amour, thriller Zero Dark Thirty, comedy Silver Linings Playbook, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, and mythological indie film Beasts of the Southern Wild.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, the nominees are: Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Alan Arkin (Argo) and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln).

Nominated for Best Supporting Actress this year are: Amy Adams (The Master), Sally Field (Lincoln), Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables), Helen Hunt (The Sessions) and Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook).

Adele has been nominated for a Best Song Oscar for her Bond theme Skyfall.

The nominations were announced by Oscars host Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre this afternoon.
