Fox boss Kevin O'Reilly has insisted that Kevin Bacon's The Following does not glorify violence.
The thriller series - from Scream writer Kevin Williamson - follows FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Bacon) and his pursuit of a brutal serial killer (played by James Purefoy).
"I think in general there have been more violent shows on TV," the Fox chief said at the current TCA (Television Critics' Association) press tour.
"Clearly there is appetite, people like these things... [but] this show adheres to broadcast standards."
Reilly also argued that shows such as The Following should not be used as "a scapegoat" for issues relating to real-world violence.
"Everyone," he insisted, "is wanting to put a finger on one thing that's the problem. We are just in an age of complex issues. It's no one simple thing."
Bacon, meanwhile, insisted that The Following has "a lot of great heart and even sentimentality".
Showrunner Williamson called the series a "thrill-ride and page-turner".
"We don't sit around and think of ways to kill people," Williamson added. "I'm sitting and thinking of the drama. It's meant to be a thriller and a provocative story."
The Following debuts on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday January 22.
