Friday night's Comic Relief on the BBC has raised over £75m so far for charity work in the UK and Africa, a new record.

Among the highlights of the stunts and spoofs extravaganza were singer Jessie J shaving her head and raising over £500,000, The X Factor's Simon Cowell walking down the aisle, the return of Ricky Gervais' David Brent, reworkings of The Vicar of Dibley and Call the Midwife, and Comic Relief does MasterChef.

Dara O Briain's adventure down Africa's Zambezi River with Melanie C, Jack Dee, Chelsee Healey, Phillips Idowu and Greg James raised almost £1.2m.

The British government has promised to match £16m of public donations to Red Nose Day to help Comic Relief's work with women in Africa.

Comic Relief co-founder Richard Curtis said: "It's almost impossible to thank enough all those who took part in the event, all the members of the public who fund-raised and all those who gave so generously on the night."
