First it was Noel Gallagher opening fire on Emeli Sandé and now Britrock's old guard has declared war on the UK's breed of polite rockers as Primal Scream deliver their learned opinion on Ben Howard. Oh, and they've also had a go at British PM David Cameron
Speaking to The Guardian, frontman Bobby Gillespie delivered his opinion on recent Brit Award winner Ben Howard (or Whoward as some wags are calling him).
"Who was that guy who won the awards? Ben Howard? He looks like David Cameron! He looks like he shares the same stylist! And, just like David Cameron, he's had a complete personality bypass. How can this guy be in rock'n'roll? How can this guy be in music?"
In the interview, Gillespie, who turned 50 last year, decried the lack of protest and agitation in modern music.
"For me, punk meant more than just some 7in records and good memories of seeing the Clash at the Apollo. For us it was the start of a creative life.
"I thought people touched by punk would become enlightened, non-sexist, non-racist, rational people. But not everybody will go through those phases as young people and take the same things from it. Someone like David Cameron . . . he's 42, 43, he would have been ripe for acid house, but it just didn't affect him."
Primal Scream release their 10th album More Light on May 13. It was produced by David Holmes, partially in his Belfast home, and it features fellow Irishman and long-time Primal Scream collaborator Kevin Shields of MBV on guitar.
Other guests include old pal Robert Plant who was invited into studio by the band to record vocals for new track Elimination Blues after they bumped into him in a London cafe.
