Saoirse Ronan shines at The Host LA premiere

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan was the star of the show in Hollywood last night at a special party to celebrate the release of her new film The Host.

The film is an adaptation of Twilight writer Stephanie Meyer's latest book and the event saw Ronan joined by co-stars Diane Kruger, Max Irons and Jake Abel.

The Hollywood Reporter says the stars walked the blue carpet alongside director Andrew Niccol before heading into the event at ArcLight Cinemas on Sunset Boulevard.

The Director and stars gave a brief introduction to the story with Niccols saying "It's more than just romantic love, which is what Stephenie has done before. It's about a greater love."

The film tells the story of people living on Earth after it has been invaded by aliens called 'souls' who use humans as hosts.

Niccol said he always favoured 18-year-old Ronan for the role of Melanie, who though invaded by a soul refuses to die, even though she was much younger than the character in the novel.

He said "We did not have a plan B. If Saoirse Ronan couldn't do it, I don't know who could do it. She's one of the most truthful actress of any age."

Ronan commented "I knew it would be a real challenge to really have to build two characters from the ground up and find a way to differentiate the two, yet still have them bounce off one another and kind of have them work in harmony with each other."

The film is due to open in Irish cinemas on March 29th.
