Sofia Vergara in talks for Heat remake

Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara is believed to be in negotiations to join Jason Statham in a planned remake of cult 1986 action thriller Heat.

The 40-year-old star is set to play Statham's leading lady as he steps into Burt Reynolds' shoes to take over the role of a recovering gambling addict, who offers his services as a bodyguard-for-hire when a female friend is attacked by the mafia, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Set in Las Vegas, the film is based on the bestselling novel by William Goldman and will be directed by Simon West, whose previous credits include action thriller Con Air, and The Expendables 2.

Vergara will next appear in The Smurfs 2 and the comedy Fading Gigolo, opposite Woody Allen, Liev Schreiber and Sharon Stone.
