In A Late Quartet, which opens April 5 at the IFI and selected cinemas, veteran actor Christopher Walken plays a cellist who discovers he has Parkinson's Disease.
The Fugue is the string quartet who have been touring the world as a much sought-after entity for 25 years. They are husband and wife, Robert and Juliette Gelbart, second violin and viola, respectively (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener).
Driven by their obsessive, perfectionist first violinist Daniel Lerner (Mark Ivanir) The Fugue appear to get on fine as friends - and in the case of two of them, marital partners - who happen to work together. But there is trouble brewing underneath and tensions are ready to explode.
The veteran of the group, cellist Peter Mitchell is played by Christopher Walken. Peter is a practical yet curiously self-effacing character who is mourning his singer wife, Miriam.
He finds it difficult to play Beethoven in the wake of his wife's passing, but it soon becomes clear that his difficulties with musical expression stem from something physical. Early in the film, he is diagnosed with Parkinson's which throws The Fugue's plans into jeopardy.
While Philip Seymour Hoffman went to the trouble of studying the violin for A Late Quartet, Walken merely imitated playing the cello. That was good enough for him. "As a kid, I had piano and guitar lessons, " the actor recently told The Guardian. " I never got anywhere. I wasn't much interested. And physically, my hands ... they're rather large and clumsy. So it wasn't for me. I was a pretty good dancer though."
The star of many Holywood movies - early success came in The Deerhunter in 1978 - Walken, now 69, admits that he is really quite conservative. "I've been married nearly 50 years. I don't have hobbies or children. I don't much care to travel. I've never had a big social life. I really just stay home, except when I go to work." A pause. "So in that sense I suppose I'm a regular guy."
