Tickets for RTÉ One's new songwriting competition series The Hit, which will be broadcast live from Dublin's O2, go on sale on Saturday, priced €5.

The tickets will be available from Ticketmaster outlets.

Presented by Nicky Byrne and Aidan Power, The Hit will be broadcast live from Dublin's O2 every Friday night on RTÉ One for six weeks, beginning on July 26.

The songs from the show and backstage news will also be broadcast on RTÉ 2fm.

The makers of the show say: "The Hit is a real music competition that is giving fledgling songwriters a chance to have chart success with an established artist.

"From all of the song submissions sent to the show, Grammy Award-winning music producer Steve Lillywhite, who has produced bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Killers and U2, selects the songs for the series."

Each episode of the show will see six songwriters pitch their songs to two established artists.

The two artists then produce one song each and perform them on the live show.

It is then up to the audience to decide which is the best song as both are available for download immediately after the performance.

The song with the most downloads each week then goes forward to the Grand Final on Friday August 30, where the most popular songs will be performed with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and viewers will choose the Song of the Series, The Ultimate Hit.
