TV great Alan Whicker dies

Alan Whicker, the globe-trotting broadcaster who made the world a more fascinating place for generations of TV viewers, has died. He was 87.

His spokesperson said the veteran presenter and reporter passed away at home in Jersey in the early hours of Friday from bronchial pneumonia.

Best known for his TV series Whicker's World, which ran for over three decades, Alan Whicker was born in Egypt in 1925 and moved to the UK as a child.

Commissioned as an officer in the Devonshire Regiment, he served in the British Army Film and Photo Unit in the Second World War. He was among the first Allied soldiers to enter Milan and filmed footage of the body of Mussolini.

After WWII, he worked as a news journalist and was a correspondent during the Korean War, later joining the BBC in 1957.

He was a reporter for the Tonight programme before launching Whicker's World, which brought viewers into the lives of the rich, famous and powerful and became must-see television.

Alan Whicker is survived by his partner of more than 40 years, Valerie Kleeman.
