Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Meth: The last ever episode of Breaking Bad - ever, ever. Warning: Spoiler Alert!

Just when Walter White had us believing that he was ready to hand himself in and hand over everything he had worked so hard to keep for his family, (re)enter Elliott and Gretchen Schwartz. They spurred him on to reject his plans to stand and deliver, choosing instead to hit the road once again.

He may have been hotly pursued by the local sheriffs but they were ill-equipped for a battle with WW, his wits beating theirs at every turn.

It's hard to believe that after five series and 62 episodes, that here we are, at the end of a perfect stream of TV gems. Naturally the Breaking Bad finale was bittersweet – just as it is when finishing a favourite book, you don't want it to end but at the same time, you know this is ground-breaking TV.

Creator/writer Vince Gilligan promised that it would be and Bryan Cranston went on the record too to endorse the finale. They promised to stay true to their fascinating story which has garnered the attention of so many with their tale of (Goodbye) Mr Chips to Scarface – and they stay true to that promise.

As the police lights shone on WW's face and the keys dropped into his lap, with his last $100,000 nestled neatly beside him and his family's fortune hidden in the boot, the excitement levels increased. Marty Robbins sang: "I saddled up and away I did go, riding alone in the dark. Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me, tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart."

The original series took place on the US AMC over five years from 2008 to 2013 but the timeline for the events on the show took place between WW's 50th and 52nd birthdays, a brilliant, rich plot which rarely if ever failed to keep viewers gripped.

At the end, Heisenberg redeemed himself with the last shred of humanity he had. He put his ego aside long enough to see the pain Jesse was in and to save his life. Plus he wrapped up all the loose endings; saying goodbye to Lydia and Todd's bad boys too; secured money for his family and a get-out-of-jail trade card; ensured that Hank and Steve would be given the burial they and their families deserved; and, finally, without his mother, little Brock has Jesse to look out for him.

The final image of Walter White, as sirens and police car lights filled the night sky, is accompanied by Badfinger singing: "Guess I got what I deserve. Kept you waiting there too long, my love. All that time without a word…The special love I had for you, my baby blue." In a word? Perfect.
