Irish X Factor contestant Melanie McCabe has said that she "really did think" that she was going to go through to the live shows, while revealing that she "probably would" go back to the reality competition if she was offered a place in a wildcard twist.
Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on Friday's Late Late Show, the X Factor veteran admitted that she was surprised when her mentor, Nicole Scherzinger, failed to put her through to the next round, saying: "I think that every year when you get further you think, 'Okay, if I go back another year they surely have to put me through again'."
McCabe continued: "You kind of hear those comeback stories where people go back and win the show - like Alexandra Burke, who went back and won it. It's always at the back of your head that, 'If I do it, I might be the same'."
She later added: "I really did think I was going to go through for some reason this year. They showed a lot of me on TV, more than they had any other year. The crew came and filmed in my house and my granddad's house. I thought that they had more interest in me going through this year, but they obviously didn't."

When asked why she decided to bypass X Factor host Dermot O'Leary after the couch elimination, McCabe said: "I wasn't being rude to Dermot at all. I love him. I was just so kind of done with the show at that stage. I just wanted to go. I had been crying on camera and I just wanted to get off and cry away from the cameras for a bit. I cried for about 10 minutes and then I came home and I haven't cried since."
However, despite missing out on a place on the popular show for a fourth time, the 20-year-old Dubliner insisted that she is "doing okay".
She said: "I've a lot to focus on after X Factor. I'm doing gigs and appearances in clubs. Me and my friend Colin have set up our own business together called MC Productions. He's an amazing musician so I'm lucky to work with him."
With recent speculation that McCabe could be brought back in an X Factor wildcard twist, Tubridy asked her if she would return if such an offer was made.
"I don't know. I probably would go back, but I don't think that's going to happen," she said. "At the moment that doesn't look like it's on the cards. But I'm still going to be singing one way or another."
