After their emotional performance of their song Hero on the Big Music Week Train the Transition Year students from Presentation Secondary School, Clonmel, have been invited to perform in Vicar Street this Saturday night.
RTÉ's Big Music Week is not only celebrating the music of established artists as it travels the length and breadth of the country this week, but it is also giving communities the chance to showcase their own musical talents.
On Tuesday, the train which is kitted out with its own recording studio and performance areas, pulled into Clonmel Station in Tipperary to meet the girls from the Presentation Secondary School, who came on board for a special IMRO master class with Luan Pearle.
They also gave a special performance of their song Hero, which they wrote in tribute to their teacher Alice Strain, who was tragically killed in a road accident last year.
Speaking to RTÉ Ten, student Katy Butler explained: "In the song there is a line 'She was an angel in disguise,' so it is about her and how amazing she was and how much we miss her.
"Her family were here today (Tuesday) so we are very happy to see them."
Transition Year coordinator Noel Buckley added: "All the team work between Big Music Week, IMRO and RTÉ - you can see the result of it here this morning. It has given them a huge release in their talent, confidence and capabilities."
Their performance has attracted huge attention and the girls have now been invited to perform at The Big Music Week charity concert in aid of Barnardos in Vicar Street this Saturday night.
Big Music Week Executive Producer Ann-Marie Power said: "It's fantastic to be able to give them a platform to showcase all their hard work. It's been a very emotional time for the community in Clonmel but it has been inspiring to see all the students come together to share their grief through song.
"People have responded so well to their song Hero that we have now decided to invite them to perform with Big Music Week train band at our charity gig in Vicar Street on Saturday night."
RTÉ's Big Music Week is set to finish on a high note with a very special charity concert in aid of Barnardos. There will be very special performances from some of Ireland's top artists including Finbar Furey, The Riptide Movement, Oliver Callan, Sculion and Heathers. The event kicks off at 8pm and will be hosted by Kathryn Thomas.
Tickets are available from ticketmaster.ie All proceeds will go to Barnardos.
