The Smiths' The Queen is Dead has topped a new NME poll of the greatest albums of all time, beating off competition from The Beatles and David Bowie.
The Smiths' third studio album was released in 1986 and is regrarded as the band's masterpiece with classics such as The Boy With The Thorn in His Side and Big Mouth Strikes Again.
The latest issue of the NME features a full rundown of The 500 greatest albums of all time as voted by the magazine and website's writers past and present, as well as previous NME top 50 albums of the year lists.
The magazine claims that The Queen is Dead is as relevant today as it was 27 years ago. "There's a perverse national pride to be gleaned from the knowledge that Britain was just as broken in 1986 as it is in 2013.
"No album is made in a vacuum, but The Queen Is Dead is one of the select few that seems to transcend its influences and synthesise them into something singular and new."
The Beatles' Revolver came second in the poll and Hunky Dory by David Bowie was third. Is This It by The Strokes came fourth and is the most recently released album in the top ten, while The Velvet Underground & Nico's eponymous album came fifth.
