Jenna Coleman has described Matt Smith's upcoming Doctor Who exit as both "brutal" and "traumatic".
The actress spoke this morning on ITV's Daybreak about filming Smith's regeneration scene and Peter Capaldi's arrival as the 12th Doctor.
"I knew it was going to be sad, but it was really traumatic," Coleman said. "It was very emotional and overwhelming."
The 27-year-old added that "the nature" of Doctor Who - with the show's ever-changing cast - means that filming on the series can be "so brutal".
"It's a strange thing [but] it's the nature of the show," she conceded.
"Matt leaves, Peter arrives in his costume and the scene carries on. You just keep going - that's the show."
The Doctor Who 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor airs on Saturday November 23 at 7.50pm on BBC One. It will also be simulcast worldwide, and screened in cinemas around the globe.
