Actress Joan Fontaine has died, aged 96.

The legendary actress passed away at her home in Carmel, California, her assistant confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday (December 15).

Fontaine is best known for her work with director Alfred Hitchcock in the classics Suspicion and Rebecca.

She won a Best Actress Oscar in 1942 for Suspicion, where she played a woman who falls under the spell of a conman, beating competition from her sister Olivia de Havilland, with whom she had a well-documented rivalry.

Fontaine earned a third best actress Oscar nomination for her performance in The Constant Nymph in 1943. She starred as Jane Eyre opposite Orson Welles in 1944 and appeared in the romantic thriller September Affair with Joseph Cotton in 1950.

Later in her career, Fontaine worked extensively in television in Wagon Train and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.

She was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1980 for her guest-starring stint in the soap opera Ryan's Hope.

Fontaine was married four times throughout her life, and had two daughters.
