Pussy Riot and Blackfish among Oscar doc shortlist

Documentaries about Russian punk rufusniks Pussy Riot, killer whale film Blackfish, and The Act of Killing are among the 15-strong shortlist for next year's Best Documentary award at the Oscars.

The Armstrong Lie, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer and The Act of Killing which documents Indonesian death squads as they re-enact their mass-killings could be in contention next March.

Also on the shortlist are The Crash Reel, God Loves Uganda, Cutie and the Boxer, Which Way Is the Front Line from Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington, Dirty Wars, First Cousin Once Removed, Life According to Sam, The Square, Stories We Tell, Tim's Vermeer and 20 Feet from Stardom.

The list will be narrowed down by The Academy by January 16 and the winner will be announced at the 2014 Academy Awards on March 2 2014.
