Director Lenny Abrahamson has said he hopes Michael Fassbender will be rewarded for his 'extraordinary performance' in 12 Years a Slave at the Oscars.
Speaking to RTÉ Ten at the launch of Digital Biscuit, the award-winning director revealed his disappointment that Michael Fassbender didn't pick up a Golden Globe earlier this week and hopes he will be rewarded for his acting efforts with an Oscar.
The Dublin native said: "I think there are a lot of strong films and some of the strongest films don't get nominated and some of the not so strong films do. I would like to see Michael Fassbender do well for 12 Years A Slave. I haven't seen it yet, but I believe his performance is extraordinary.
Abrahamson also hopes a wide range of movies will be included in the Academy Award nominations, which are due to be announced later today.
"It would be nice to see the awards focus on a slightly broader set of films than would normally be the case. What's interesting is there seems to be room for intelligent films for grown-ups in amongst the bigger kind of offerings and that's a heartening sign."
Abrahamson will be appearing at the Sundance Film Festival tomorrow (Jan 16) for the first screening of his latest movie Frank. He told RTÉ Ten that Frank is quite a departure for him and he is looking forward to seeing how audiences will react.
"I am feeling good about it, but you never know until you put your film in front of an audience what the reaction will be – it's the pudding eating part of the job.
"It's got a great cast Michael, Maggie Gyllenhall and Domhnall Gleeson. Michael plays an extraordinary character who hides himself under a giant head.
"For me it is a little bit of a departure because it a lot more comic than anything I have done before, but it also has quite a poignant side and I think it is an interesting, unusual film."
