Iggy & The Stooges drummer Scott Asheton has died at the age of 64. He and his guitarist brother Ron were members of the influential band along with frontman Iggy Pop.

The drummer passed away on Saturday (March 15) of undisclosed causes, five years after Ron's death and was remembered as "a great artist" by Pop in a subsequent statement.

Pop wrote on Facebook: "My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton.

"He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton's have always been and continue to be a second family to me.

"My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life."

The Ashetons formed The Stooges with Pop and Dave Alexander in Michigan in 1967, with the group later undergoing several line-up changes. Their landmark albums include Funhouse and Raw Power.

Scott took part in a Stooges reunion in 2003, and the band recorded a new studio albums The Weirdness in 2007 and Ready to Die in 2013.

He suffered ill health in recent years, but was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, along with fellow Stooges Iggy Pop, Dave Alexander and James Williamson.
