Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz has signed a new deal with Netflix.

The 50-year-old writer and producer has agreed a multi-year contract with the online streaming service, and will create them a new show through own his production company.

Deadline adds that he will also develop further projects with other creators, in the role a non-writing executive producer, and will provide consultation for comedy shows.

Hurwitz previously worked with Netflix on a new, fourth season of the revived cult comedy Arrested Development, which returned last year amid much fanfare.

"We are lucky to be in business with Mitch Hurwitz, a true genius with one of the most distinctive voices in comedy today," said Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.

"Mitch's inventive approach to Arrested Development - one of the top TV comedies of this generation - was ahead of its time, and we're fortunate to have him on our team."

Hurwitz described his collaboration with Netflix as "the best professional experience of my life, even topping some of my favourite unprofessional experiences."

There have also reportedly been discussions about a fifth season or a movie version of Arrested Development.
