Beyoncé has said she hopes her latest album will provoke conversations about what she calls the "sexual double standard between men and women."
In a forthcoming interview with Out magazine, she says she hopes her self-titled new album, which was given a surprise release last December, has "opened up [a] conversation" about women as sexual beings, and not just victims.
In an email interview with Out for their May Power issue, Beyoncé wrote: "Men are free and women are not. The old lessons of submissiveness and fragility made us victims.
"[But] women are so much more than that. You can be a businesswoman, a mother, an artist, and a feminist - whatever you want to be - and still be a sexual being. It's not mutually exclusive."
Speaking about her latest album, she said: "I really set out to make the most personal, honest, and best album I could make, free from the pressures and expectations of what I thought I should say or be".
She added: "Being that I am a woman in a male-dominated society, the feminist mentality rang true to me and became a way to personalise that struggle.
"What I'm really referring to, and hoping for, is [overall] human rights and equality," she said. It's meant as a vision for anyone "who considers themselves an oppressed minority . . . to be just who we want to be and to love who we want to love".
