Benedict Cumberbatch has said he would've liked a role in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Wars film but has ruled out his involvement.

There has been much speculation that the Sherlock star would reunite with his Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams for the film but Cumberbatch has put an end to the rumours saying, "I would've liked a part in J.J.'s new Star Wars but it won't happen, sadly."

So far the only confirmed cast member for Star Wars: Episode VII is the original series' stars Peter Mayhew, as Chewbacca.

Girls star Adam Driver is said to have been cast as the villain of the movie, with Breaking Bad star Jesse Plemons, Ed Speelers and Matthew James Thomas all rumoured to be in the running for a leading role.

Saoirse Ronan, Lupita Nyong'o and Michael B. Jordan are said to have met with Abrams though no casting is confirmed.

Star Wars: Episode VII is set for release in December 2015 and production has started.
