The new season of US political thriller Homeland is to shoot in South Africa from mid-June.

The Showtime drama will relocate to Cape Town for its latest run, which is expected to be in production until November.

Homeland - which stars Claire Danes as CIA agent Carrie Mathison - shot its previous three seasons in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"We've been so lucky to work with one of the best crews in the business for the last three seasons in Charlotte," showrunner and executive producer Alex Gansa said in a statement.

"We knew going into season four that we would need to move the production overseas to tell the story of Carrie returning to the Middle East as chief of station.

"We are thrilled to have found a new home in Cape Town and look forward to getting season four production off the ground."

Season four will find Mathison despatched to one of the most volatile and dangerous CIA stations in the Middle East, where she is back on the front line.

Homeland season four is expected to run on Showtime in the US and RTÉ Two in Ireland in late 2014.
