Ryan and Park on IMPAC shortlist

Novels by Donal Ryan and David Park are among 10 that have been shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Ryan, a native of Nenagh in Co Tipperary, is nominated for his debut, The Spinning Heart. Ryan has previously won The Guardian First Book Award and Book of the Year at the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards for The Spinning Heart.

Park, who was born in Belfast, has been shortlisted for his book The Light of Amsterdam, which was previously nominated for the Irish Novel of the Year award.

The winner of the IMPAC Award will receive €100,000.

The winner will be announced on June 12.

The other authors on the shortlist are:

Absolution by Patrick Flanery

A Death in the Family by Karl Ove Knausgaard, translated by Don Bartlett

Three Strong Woman by Marie NDiaye, translated by John Fletcher

Traveller of the Century by Andrés Neuman, translated by Nick Caistor and Lorenza Garcia

The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng

The Sound of Things Falling by Juan Gabriel Vásquez, translated from the original Spanish by Anne McLean

Dublin's Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Henry Upton, said: "This is a list of high quality literature that includes five novels in translation which readers might not otherwise get the opportunity to read, and I am delighted to see Donal Ryan and David Park on the list. This is a real tribute from the judges to the quality of contemporary Irish writing."
