The Library of Congress in the US has added U2's seminal 1987 album The Joshua Tree to its National Recording Registry of works that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" and which will be preserved for future generations.
The U2 album is one of 25 works added to the registry, with other new inductees including The Everly Brothers' Cathy's Clown, Creedence Clearwater Revival's Fortunate Son, Isaac Hayes' Theme from Shaft, Linda Ronstadt's Heart Like a Wheel and Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah.
In a statement, Librarian of Congress James H Billington said: "These recordings represent an important part of America's culture and history."
He added: "As technology continually changes and formats become obsolete, we must ensure that our nation's aural legacy is protected. The National Recording Registry is at the core of this effort."
