Emmys nominations 2014 announced

The 66th Primetime Emmy Nominations have been announced today  (July 10) by Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly.

The highly coveted Best Drama Series gong will be hotly contested this year, with Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Mad Men, True Detective and Downton Abbey the nominees.

The nominees for Best Actor in a Drama Series are: Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Woody Harrelson (True Detective), Matthew McConaughey (True Detective), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) and Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom).

The nominees for Best Actress in a Drama Series: are Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Claire Danes (Homeland), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).

The Best Comedy Series category will see The Big Bang Theory, Louie, Modern Family, Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley and Veep go head to head.

Meanwhile, the Lead Actress in a Comedy nominees are Lena Dunham (Girls), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Melissa McCarthy (Mike & Molly), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) and Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black).

The Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nominees are Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Matt LeBlanc (Episodes), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Louis C.K. (Louie), William H. Macy (Shameless) and Ricky Gervais (Derek).

The 2014 Emmy awards will take place on August 25.
