Tommy Ramone, the last surviving member of pioneering New York punk band The Ramones, has died at the age of 62.

Variety reports that he had been undergoing treatment for bile duct cancer at a hospice when he died.

"We are saddened to announce the passing of Ramones founding drummer Tommy (Erdelyi) Ramone. #RIPTommy Ramone," the band's official Twitter account announced.

The band members adopted the surname Ramone although they were not related.

Founded in New York in 1974, they had a major influence on punk rock and released a string of seminal albums such as Leave Home, Rocket to Russia and Road to Ruin which were noted for their gonzo humour, brevity and trademark countdown intros of `1, 2, 3 ,4 . . . ".

The Ramones were frequent visitors to Ireland during the late seventies.
