The new HBO show The Leftovers marks Liv Tyler's first foray into television, but the actress actually considered giving up acting all together.
Before she was picked for the much-anticipated series - due to air on Sky Atlantic this autumn - the 37-year old actress and mother-of-one would wake up in her Manhattan townhouse and dream of another life.
"I'd think: maybe I should just move to the country and open a store and write books and make music and have a million babies and take in animals," Tyler tells The Observer today.
"Part of me always longed for it. I'd look at the entertainment industry as a whole and I'd think: where do I fit into all this and do I even want to be a part of it? Then this came along and it made everything worth waiting for."
Already huge in the USA, The Leftovers is based on the novel by Tom Perrotta, who co-created the series with Damon Lindelof who wrote the Lost series.
The Leftovers is based on the premise that two per cent of the world's population has vanished without explanation. Three years later, the story begins with the remaining citizens living on in bewilderment and confusion in a fictional New York town.
"This is not a show that's going to give out a lot of reassurance, " Tom Perrotta has declared about the show. "It's about faith and religion and mystery and grief."
Time magazine dubbed The Leftovers "one of the truest TV evocations… of the waking-dream feel of actual mourning."
In the series, Tyler plays Meg, a bitter, resentful woman who leaves her fiancé for a weird, non-speaking cult known as the Guilty Remnant.
