Hozier breaks U2's 27-year Irish Number One run

Hozier has denied U2's new album, Songs of Innocence, the top album position in Ireland, breaking the veteran band's 27-year No 1 run of first week Irish number one albums.

In a sign of the changing of the guard, the Bray singer's self-titled debut stays at the top of the Irish charts for the fourth week leaving Songs of Innocence at No 2, the first time U2 have not debuted at No 1 in Ireland since the release of The Joshua Tree in 1987.

In the UK, Songs of Innocence is set to debut at U2's lowest chart position for 30 years this Monday. According to the UK's Official Charts Company midweek update, U2 are set to enter the chart at number four, behind Jessie J and Ella Henderson.

All olf U2's studio albums since 1983's War have debuted at number one, except for Achtung Baby, which was outsold by Michael Jackson's Dangerous in 1991.

U2's latest chart performance is a natural reflection of the fact that they gave Songs of Innocence away for free on iTunes in September.

Hozier has had the fastest-selling album of the year in Ireland and earlier this week he also hit No 2 in the US Billboard chart and No 5 in the UK as well as top 10 positions in several other European countries.

Elsewhere in the new album and singles chart, One Direction stall at No 3 with their new single Steal My Girl, X Factor graduate Ella Henderson debuts at No 2 with her album Chapter One, and Dublin band Delorentos are at No 5 with their fifth album Night Becomes Light
