Wahlberg seeks pardon for teenage assaults

Mark Wahlberg is seeking a pardon for assaults he committed as a teenager in 1988.

The Hollywood star was convicted at age 16 of assaulting a man while attempting to steal two cases of alcohol from a store in Boston and punching another man while trying to run away from the police. He was sentenced to three months in jail but was released after 45 days.

Wahlberg has said that since then he has improved his life and become a mentor to others and has raised millions for charity.

He said in a statement: "I have not engaged in philanthropic efforts in order to make people forget about my past. To the contrary, I want people to remember my past so that I can serve as an example of how lives can be turned around and how people can be redeemed.

"Rather than ignore or deny my troubled past, I have used the public spotlight to speak openly about the mistakes I made as a teenager so that others do not make those same mistakes."

The Massachusetts parole board will now review Wahlberg's case before making a recommendation to the governor, who will have the final say.
