The next James Bond movie Spectre has been refused permission to film a car chase sequence in Rome.

Producers had hoped to film the high octane scenes in the Italian capital, but city officials are concerned that filming may result in damage to prestigious monuments.

Federica Galloni told Il Messaggero newspaper: "We have not authorised the sequence at the Quattro Fontane (Four Fountains) because it is too fragile in terms of architecture."

She explained that producers have been asked to use special effects for the sequence, as the fountains are currently undergoing expensive renovation.

In the proposed scenes, Daniel Craig's Bond would drive his Aston Martin through the Eternal City's streets in a night-time chase.

Spectre is due for release on November 6.
