Before you book those cinema tickets make sure you read our reviews of the films showing this weekend.

Foxcatcher, 5/5

Director: Bennett Miller

Starring: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller

Wealthy heir John du Pont (Steve Carell) persuades Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) to be his star wrestler. Schultz won a gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, but is by now a forgotten hero. No expense is spared as du Pont grooms him for the ultimate prize, the 1988 Olympics.

Tragedy comes in the wake of du Pont's obsessive quest in what will be the film of the year for many. Based on true events.

Taken 3, 2/5

Director: Olivier Megaton

Starring: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Forest Whitaker, Dougray Scott, Jon Gries, Johnny Weston

Liam Neeson - reprising his role as Bryan Mills - is framed and forced to go on the run in this passably entertaining sequel. But somehow the constant violence and the - let's face it - ludicrously unfeasible set-ups tend to swamp the human story that reverberated strongly through the first Taken.

Somehow, the cartoon violence, the exploding cars, the rather clichéd Russian baddies, and the gimmicky technology tend to highlight the absence of the kind of appealing human story that distinguished the first film. Pity.

Into The Woods, 3.5/5

Director: Rob Marshall

Starring: Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp

Take the director of Chicago, an all-star cast, a Broadway hit musical and a whole heap of fairytales and you've got Into the Woods. Meryl Streep is brilliant as always, while Chris Pine is a real scene-stealer.

I was drawn into the world of Into the Woods from the get-go, but unfortunately the final act brought in a little bit too much reality, ending the film on a more sombre note than expected. It's definitely worth the watch - I just wish it had ended on a high.

Birdman, 4.5/5

Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu

Starring: Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Lindsay Duncan

In this mischievously black comedy Michael Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, a fading superhero film star who's trying to resurrect his career and gain some cred as a serious actor with a Raymond Carver adaptation.

The story unravels at a relentless pace, and an outstanding cast are in top form, led by Emma Stone and Edward Norton as Riggan's daughter-turned-PA and a near-psychotic method actor.

Keaton isn't just back, he's redefined his career in a most unlikely manner.

The Theory of Everything, 4/5

Director: James Marsh

Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Harry Lloyd, Emily Watson, Simon McBurney

The Theory of Everything, James Marsh's biopic about famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, could so easily have gone awry - but Marsh has managed to pull together a moving yet not overtly-sentimental look back at his life and loves, which hinges on the incredible performances of the two leading actors.

Eddie Redmayne more than rises to the challenge of playing Hawking in a stunning performance that never falls into mimicry, instead managing to capture the very essence of his brilliant mind and mischievous sense of humour.

The Woman in Black: Angel of Death, 3/5

Director: Tom Harper

Starring: Phoebe Fox, Jeremy Irvine, Helen McCrory, Oaklee Pendergast, Leanne Best, Adrian Rawlins

While not as special as the Daniel Radcliffe-starring film of 2012, this sequel (a new story) is still a classily-made, fun watch with newcomer Phoebe Fox excellent in the lead role - we'll be seeing a lot more of her. So, at least there's one happy ending here, then.

The story takes place four decades after the original film as a group of child evacuees from the Blitz are moved to Eel Marsh House. It's not long before things start going bump in the day and night...
